  1. If there is one thing Marlon Byrd didn't have it was a good track record. He was kind of bad through his age 28 season, then surged in his 29-31 seasons in Texas. He's 34 now and turns 35 during next season. If you have Byrd/Colvin/Soriano platooning in LF and RF next year, it could help some, but that also means Tyler Colvin is going to be playing a hell of a lot, and that's not necessarily something I'd like to see.
  2. I'm not sure he's the type of guy you offer arbitration to. At that point he may actually be taking up space that could be used for somebody else. He'll be 35 and potentially coming off back to back disappointing seasons. I'd imagine Byrd would be getting his last multi-year deal after this season. Can't see him accepting arb. Sure, if he has a decent season he might get a new 2-3 year deal next offseason. But at this stage of the game, I think I'd prefer to deal him elsewhere, let them think about the potential for compensation picks in 2013, and get something else of value today. I'm not enthusiastic about playing out 2012 with the hopes that he will be good enough to justify offering arbitration to. He was a pretty bad player before he broke out in Texas. And since that significant improvement he has been in decline. He's entering his mid-30's and has probably given you almost all of his value already. I don't see teams knocking down his door to give him a multi-year deal and give the Cubs a draft pick unless he has a significantly resurgent season.
  3. i hate pittsburgh, but they really have impressed me over the last year. malkin and crosby missed a ton of time last year and they still finished a point out from the best record in the east. Yeah, I don't know how they do it, but getting manhandled by a Pittsburgh team that lacks Malkin and Crosby doesn't say a whole lot.
  4. Alright everybody, calm down. Nothing has happened yet.
  5. In order to win your division I think you need to beat the teams in your division. I have no problem with 18 games a year with the Brewers, Cardinals, Pirates, and Reds. I'd be fine with something like 12 games against division foes and 8 against the other clubs, but I hate only playing 2 series a year against the other 10 teams in your league. As somebody who lives in NY I probably should hate that, but I don't. And I really don't understand why other people do. The benefits of building up your division rivals and determining your division winner through lots of in-division games outweigh the benefits of getting to fly to Atlanta twice a year.

  8. who's ignoring it? The people who dismissed it by saying he fell into his lap.
  9. I don't know about that. I'm pretty sure that other interested GMs werent thinking "I should go after Cutler...well no, I'm not even sure who is to blame for him asking out...I'd better stay out of this." Obviously I was being somewhat sarcastic but there definitely was a perception that Cutler was a spoiled brat, and don't for a second think there weren't GMs who felt that way. This wasn't Ramirez or Lee falling in Hendry's lap, where the only reason they got them is because the Cubs have more money than almost every other team. It was not some fait accompli that Chicago would get Cutler. I'm not calling Angelo a genius for making the move, but there's no reason to just ignore it as something he did.
  10. I don't know how easily tradeable he is, he would make almost $10m this and has a career ERA+ of 96 and WHIP of 1.424. I think this is more the case of a team with a $40m payroll not wanting to spend 1/4 of it on a pitcher who isn't that good. That being said I think the Cubs should show some interest and would be fine bringing him on for the right price. I'd bet Maholm makes at least 10M AAV on the contract he signs, and that'll be a multi-year commitment as opposed to having the reduced risk of 1 year. All I know is a Pirates fan I know said there was an assumption all year that they wouldn't pick up his option for financial reasons.
  11. I like the idea of trading Byrd instead of just letting him walk next year. You could fool some team into thinking he's worth giving up value for.
  12. He did fall into his lap, but Angelo had the guts to make the move. The Bears became a likely destination because the Bears showed interest while everybody else argued over who was the biggest bitch in that situation. Chicago was definitely not the only potential suitor. And it wasn't some free agent destination where Cutler had his choice of destination.
  13. How did you think he was a meathead?
  14. I'm trying to figure out why getting rid of a LFer is necessary to free up a spot for a CFer? I don't know what the plan is, but if they wanna bring him up quickly and keep Byrd, Byrd can slide over to LF and put him in CF.The main thing is just getting rid of Sorianos contract and him and we can browse a lot of other options which Im sure would be a lot more productive and beneficial than what Soriano brings. Plus with his age, he's just going to keep getting worse. Why not platoon Soriano and Colvin and let Byrd play RF?

  16. Really, this should have very little effect on his job. In fact, he probably gets paid the same to deal with less crap he doesn't really give a damn about. Go make more money so we can buy more good players. No effect on his job, but his title is president, and having it be president business operations is ceding some of his presidency to Epstein.
  17. If Kenney is on board with moving from President to President Business Operations as his official title, he should be applauded for being so on board with doing what is necessary to help the team.
  18. I think he will come in boner raging Fleita to be given even cushier job to get out of the way, Quade shot out of a cannon, and 1 major FA signing we're all hoping for I'm guessing he will be aggressive early with players, but wait a little bit with the front office. I guess he brings a couple guys with him, but they will be replacing the Hughes/Littlefield/Wasserstrom/Bush positions, and then figure out what he wants to do with Fleita and Wilken.
  19. I'm hoping. I would guess he would rather just try and get something out of him this year at that price than just waste the money on paying him to play elsewhere. I would think Ricketts would be open to letting his GM determine that outcome.
  20. Must resist urge for insensitive religious joke.
  21. Based on 2011, the only average/above average starting pitcher the Cubs have is Garza. Based on WHIP/ERA Wells, Z and Dempster were all in the bottom third of NL pitchers with over 100 IP. Maybe I'm too pessimistic, but I don't see Z turning it around at this point, and although Dempster did turn it around toward the end of the year, he is not getting younger. In regard to position players, offensively, Soto and Barney are well below avg. Soto ranks 10th in NL in OPS for C with over 200 ABs and Barney ranked 17th. Soto is an above average catcher. And Barney's defense supposedly ranks pretty damn high. He's probably a tick above average.
  22. Oh, well in that case........ Does that not factor into the durability question? No, an arm is not a lung. Big fat slobs have had very durable arms. It's also just a throwaway line by you that obviously cannot be verified.
  23. I'm a little confused about the buyout language, are the Cubs picking up Theo's tab for buying out of his own contract or is Boston buying out the rest of his contract and the Cubs reimbursing them? If it's the latter that would seem to end any talk of other compensation, and obviously confirm they wanted him out.
