    We'll see. It's not as exciting as the day Hendry was fired. Maybe that will change when an announcement is made. But that one will be hard to beat.

    Again, the offense was already average and you'd be replacing an average 1B with a 1B who is a hell of a lot better. You also don't have to get rid of Ramirez. The offense isn't weak. It wasn't strong, but it could be if you replaced Pena with Pujols. The pitching staff was a problem. Some of it was health and when it comes to health it is very difficult to know what you are going to get. I'm not thinking they have much of a chance to turn into a potential #1 seed next year, but they should be able to field a contender. And there is no good reason to hope for another bad season when you can realistically hope to be at least decent for 6 months.

    There is all kinds of stupid at work here. First off, the Cubs scored the 8th most runs in the NL this year and had the 8th highest OPS. They are average. You can compete with that (Philly and Atlanta did). Add a superstar to that lineup while replacing a mediocre guy and you are going to have a respectable offense. The Cubs have sucked for two straight years, why would you want to go through that again? One higher draft pick is not worth sucking when those draft picks are such longshots to contribute anyway.

    That's been reported elsewhere too. I think no one really knows until the GM is hired. If they loose Aramis and Pena and don't sign a big FA the Cubs offense could be really offensive... Badumbum! "Losing" Pena would have absolutely nothing to do with it. If they lose Ramirez and don't get Pujols or Fielder, the offense will suck.

    I don't understand how he can say that, and how anyone can be sure what will happen with any players when we don't have a freaking GM. Most reports have stated the Cubs probably won't go after either big first basemen. But most of them may just be basing it off of assumptions about Ricketts' statements regarding the draft/prospects/development. So who knows.

    They've drafted some quality defensive linemen. Unless Carimi turns into something, they can't say the same thing on offense. They've had huge busts, like that freaking idiotic Dan Bazuin selection, but Harris was great, Johnson and Dusty were good but with side issues that kept them from living up to their abilities. And a few other guys have been decent enough.

    Not me. Hendry was clearly worse at his job, wasting a huge payroll advantage that no NFL GM can have. As disappointing as they've been, they haven't been close to being as bad as the Cubs have been in their worst years. 4 playoff appearances (although only 3 should be credited to him), including 1 SB and 1 NFCCG loss with only 2 real stinkers that came early in his tenure. Compare that to Hendry who was a major part of the organization long before he took over. I don't like the guy, and definitely think they can and should do better. But I don't have nearly the same level of disdain for how he does his job as I did with Hendry. With Hendry you knew they could go right from one of the worst to one of the best GMs out there. With Angelo, who the hell knows what they will do to replace him. Possibly the same idiot who helped make Seattle suck.

    By having 2 stud hitters, a couple other good ones and surrounded by mostly competent players and a solid pitching staff. It's not like they played all year with him in the 6 hole. Every year teams have a hack or two who have to fill roles late in the postseason.

    Yeah. Lieber was piling up huge pitch counts before his injury. The story was that he was a WorkHorse so it didn't matter. He really wasn't racking up huge pitch counts. The guy threw 90 pitch complete games.

    Why not? 3 years as an excellent starter in a very hitter's-friendly ballpark. Much less wear and tear on his body than the usual 31-year-old starter due to him having been a reliever. Jon Lieber was also a relatively young arm with little wear on his arm when Dusty Baker gave him the rain delay treatment and within a year or so he was under the knife. That was Baylor. That's right.

    And he's coming off 230 IP and 232 and counting so far this season. And he racked up those extreme innings with an arm that was absolutely not prepared to do it.

    The fact that spending more doesn't guarantee winning or that lower payroll teams have contended is absolutely meaningless. You can't take a team that already has a high payroll and a pathetic supply of prospects, slash that payroll and expect them to contend anytime soon. If they were a $100m payroll team already, that would be one thing. But they aren't.

    I seriously doubt that. I don't think Lovie's in danger here at all. Angelo maybe, but Lovie took a flawed team to the NFCC last season, and had almost no weaknesses addressed by Angelo during the offseason. He's still under contract for 2012 and 2013. I don't see the Bears eating that. The thing is, with the offensive line as bad as they are and the defense not being able to stop anything, it is conceivable that this team nosedives the rest of the way. At some point Lovie's message is going to die out which will erase the only thing he does well, which is have the team ready to give max effort of gameday. Also, either through retirement or a need to make a move, Angelo could be out the door, and I have to think any other GM in the game would consider dumping Lovie. If the season continues on this path, Lovie's seat will be getting very warm. Maybe not hot enough to fire him soon, but hot enough to make 2012 a make or break year.

    the thing is, its been like this for over a year now. EVERY game he's under siege. Its not like the Lions D line (albeit very good) suddenly showed the weaknesses in our o-line It's been well over a year, and the writing has been on the wall for this line for much longer than that.

    The actual number is the entire point, not just some minor detail. Everybody and his brother has reported that payroll was going to be stagnant or lower, you aren't reporting anything if you say that.

    He's a Chicago sports guy who apparently doesn't know anything if he thinks the payroll is 100M Shaer says Ricketts would rather invest the money coming off the books next year into management, minor leagues, and other infrastructure (personnel & facilities) than payroll. Also says the offer will be in the ballpark of 5 guaranteed years, ~$2-4 million/year. He obviously wants to invest more in the front office and prospects, but that doesn't mean he's going to lop off 30% of the big league payroll. If you pay your GM a lot of money, that is the equivalent of a middle relievers salary. You can pay your GM a lot of money and pay 3 assistants a lot of money and still not dent the payroll.

    True, but the only reason was Cutler. The defensive line did nothing though, and the linebackers have to take a big part of the blame on those runs. This defense got old again in a hurry.

    Pressure in Chicago to win doesn't even compare to the pressure in Boston. He brought 2 titles to a title starved city and half the people still want him gone. Jim Hendry brought a few playoff appearances and more 90 loss seasons than 90 win seasons and there were still people who thought he deserved to try again next year. Chicago still worships the 85 freaking Bears even though they should have brought 2-3 Super Bowls. If Theo avoids 90 loss seasons in Chicago, and gets them into the playoffs on occasion, there will be no pressure.
