    Some times I feel that way, but then other times you see the guy go out and trade for a legit #1 QB. He ignores the offensive line in the draft, then he spends 2 #1 picks in 4 years on linemen. He got arrogant on things like the Bazuin and Wolfe picks, thinking he could overspend on his own diamonds in the rough. But then he also went out and got Peppers when his pass rush picks weren't panning out.

    They've drafted some quality defensive linemen. Unless Carimi turns into something, they can't say the same thing on offense. They've had huge busts, like that freaking idiotic Dan Bazuin selection, but Harris was great, Johnson and Dusty were good but with side issues that kept them from living up to their abilities. And a few other guys have been decent enough. Harris was the only one. Dvorcek (sp?) was injury riddled and Johnson didn't pan out. Paea hasn't even dressed yet on a D-Line with no depth. They traded a 2nd rd. pick on a 1st rd. bust, that doesn't factor what happened. Dusty was good and then he got injured, you can't claim they missed that badly on him in the draft when injuries were his undoing. They've screwed up the offensive line, but the defensive line hasn't been nearly as bad.

    Giving up Jackson would be a mistake. If you are hiring a guy with a promotion involved who the team has been completely noncommital about keeping longterm, it's stupid to even suggest that a #1 prospect needs to be returned.

    I wouldn't be fine with it. But if a gm gets to hire and fire one guy before his own seat gets warm it might as well be the overwhelming fan favorite.

    I think the personal struggle reports are nonsense. It's a negotiation and Epstein wants access to some of his underlings.

    And Soriano... and Casey Coleman, Rodrigo Lopez, etc. I think it's just going to be money. I hope so. I have a bad feeling that the Cubs will give up something stupid like Cashner. Give 'em Vitters and call it a day.

    We'll see. It's not as exciting as the day Hendry was fired. Maybe that will change when an announcement is made. But that one will be hard to beat. This would be way better than Hendry getting canned. That was nice, but this would be the fulfillment of the promise of that day, when names like Ned Colletti were being tossed around. I never thought then that Epstein was a real possibility. The day Hendry was fired, or more appropriately, his firing was announced, my opinion of Ricketts skyrocketted and any thoughts of Colletti were just nonsense tossed around by people whose livelihood depended on their contacts with that type of "baseball man". Before that day, I wasn't entirely comfortable with where he was taking this team. But that showed everything I needed to know. The next GM is just going to be the icing.

    We'll see. It's not as exciting as the day Hendry was fired. Maybe that will change when an announcement is made. But that one will be hard to beat.

    Again, the offense was already average and you'd be replacing an average 1B with a 1B who is a hell of a lot better. You also don't have to get rid of Ramirez. The offense isn't weak. It wasn't strong, but it could be if you replaced Pena with Pujols. The pitching staff was a problem. Some of it was health and when it comes to health it is very difficult to know what you are going to get. I'm not thinking they have much of a chance to turn into a potential #1 seed next year, but they should be able to field a contender. And there is no good reason to hope for another bad season when you can realistically hope to be at least decent for 6 months.

    There is all kinds of stupid at work here. First off, the Cubs scored the 8th most runs in the NL this year and had the 8th highest OPS. They are average. You can compete with that (Philly and Atlanta did). Add a superstar to that lineup while replacing a mediocre guy and you are going to have a respectable offense. The Cubs have sucked for two straight years, why would you want to go through that again? One higher draft pick is not worth sucking when those draft picks are such longshots to contribute anyway.

    That's been reported elsewhere too. I think no one really knows until the GM is hired. If they loose Aramis and Pena and don't sign a big FA the Cubs offense could be really offensive... Badumbum! "Losing" Pena would have absolutely nothing to do with it. If they lose Ramirez and don't get Pujols or Fielder, the offense will suck.

    I don't understand how he can say that, and how anyone can be sure what will happen with any players when we don't have a freaking GM. Most reports have stated the Cubs probably won't go after either big first basemen. But most of them may just be basing it off of assumptions about Ricketts' statements regarding the draft/prospects/development. So who knows.

    Not me. Hendry was clearly worse at his job, wasting a huge payroll advantage that no NFL GM can have. As disappointing as they've been, they haven't been close to being as bad as the Cubs have been in their worst years. 4 playoff appearances (although only 3 should be credited to him), including 1 SB and 1 NFCCG loss with only 2 real stinkers that came early in his tenure. Compare that to Hendry who was a major part of the organization long before he took over. I don't like the guy, and definitely think they can and should do better. But I don't have nearly the same level of disdain for how he does his job as I did with Hendry. With Hendry you knew they could go right from one of the worst to one of the best GMs out there. With Angelo, who the hell knows what they will do to replace him. Possibly the same idiot who helped make Seattle suck.

    By having 2 stud hitters, a couple other good ones and surrounded by mostly competent players and a solid pitching staff. It's not like they played all year with him in the 6 hole. Every year teams have a hack or two who have to fill roles late in the postseason.

    Yeah. Lieber was piling up huge pitch counts before his injury. The story was that he was a WorkHorse so it didn't matter. He really wasn't racking up huge pitch counts. The guy threw 90 pitch complete games.

    Why not? 3 years as an excellent starter in a very hitter's-friendly ballpark. Much less wear and tear on his body than the usual 31-year-old starter due to him having been a reliever. Jon Lieber was also a relatively young arm with little wear on his arm when Dusty Baker gave him the rain delay treatment and within a year or so he was under the knife. That was Baylor. That's right.

    And he's coming off 230 IP and 232 and counting so far this season. And he racked up those extreme innings with an arm that was absolutely not prepared to do it.

    The fact that spending more doesn't guarantee winning or that lower payroll teams have contended is absolutely meaningless. You can't take a team that already has a high payroll and a pathetic supply of prospects, slash that payroll and expect them to contend anytime soon. If they were a $100m payroll team already, that would be one thing. But they aren't.
