if i was the white sox i would go $40m the first two years followed by an opt-out and a more reasonable ($30m or whatever) AAV after that. They convince Harper to come based on the early dollar signs with the idea being that if the team isnt competitive in that 2-year window he can just hit FA as a 28-year-old again. from their perspective they're only out an extra $20m over what it would have cost anyway.

Can't imagine their fnancial situation is much more accommodating than the Cubs. Yeah, I don’t get this. i think it probably has to do with their presumably having more tradeable money than we do. Like we would have to work pretty hard to move enough money (heyward, chatwood etc) while they can surely find a taker for Puig without much trouble.

I made it anonymous and wasn’t trying to pin it on anyone. Iirc, it was something that made me sound like a concerned newspaper reader of Oklahoma. I was surprised he blamed it on someone else, he seemed so sure. was it just a coincidence that it came the same day i was fighting with that socialist bastard in the game of thrones tv thread because he kept trying to low-key post spoilers? that's why i assumed it was him.

He who smelt it, dealt it. Nah, but this is as good a time as any to confess that I was the one who got mad at IMB for some dumb reason and tried to send him GOT spoilers at his work e-mail. I think he blamed Sully. aahahahahahhahahaha amazing. I did blame sully for that and he messaged me on facebook about it repeatedly claiming innocence until I blocked him.

yes we all are, because the point of the tank (or reset if you wanna play it nice) was that you would take your lumps on the front end while they accumulated assets and turned the team into a cash machine so they could spend big on players exactly like bryce harper. the payroll in a vacuum is great but we did not lose for 5 years or whatever so we could sign chatwood and darvish and duensing but so we could sign 26 year old studs when they hit the market. if they don't even try to sign harper then they're abandoning a large reason of why the tank was necessary

like all these things are simultaneously true the ricketts' ownership has been an improvement in many ways the ricketts are largely butt as a family the cubs are spending a lot of money the cubs should be spending more money the cubs may not be allowed to sign bryce harper the cubs have the money to sign bryce harper at any cost bryce harper may not even want to sign here the whole point of "the tank" was not to just lose and accumulate picks, it was to allow them to accumulate assets and then spend big on exactly this type of scenario to ensure a decade-ish long window. Whiffing on the heyward, chatwood, and darvish (tbd) signings should not preclude you from trying to sign bryce horsefeathering harper. he was the whole point of the god damn tank.

I never understand this. yeah i dont get it either, but probably because i dont think of the hall as just a WAR leaderboard. the argument guys like keith law use is that most relievers (hoffman, rivera etc) were just failed starters. the idea being that any failed starter could be a successful closer. And yet there are hundreds of failed starters every year who just disappear and are never heard from again while teams like the cubs spend 10 million on kintzlers and duensings.
