  1. Tim Brown said he still expects Red Sox to go after closer, think of Meloncon as an 8th inning guy, with the future ability to close. Solid return for Stros, as far as I'm concerned. But, I've always liked Lowrie.
  2. I hate even asking this, but why is NOW not the right time to spend on a bigtime FA to begin with? Money off the books, more money coming off next year. Seems kind of perfect timing to me.
  3. But there will be better times to sign FAs. Like when you're competing with Boston and the Yankees for those free agents. That's always fun. Bingo. From that argument, Fielder is damn near the PERFECT guy for us, for that reason alone.
  4. The mythical, perfect FA that we hope winds up on the horizon, just won't be showing up. Teams are locking their guys into deals much, much, much earlier now. What we're going to be seeing is a bunch of 30ish year olds or so as the big names from here on out. And if that perfect guy DID show up? He'd probably cost in excess of 300 mill anyway, so half the board would STILL be grumbling about overpaying anyway. So, we sign a guy with a wart or two? So what? Until the system is literally producing bigtime talent guys on a yearly basis(never) this is what ALL big market teams HAVE to do, in order to compete on a year in, year out basis.
  5. Some other WR's who are FA for next season: Vincent Jackson(has been talked about) Mike Wallace(restricted) Wes Welker, Dwayne Bowe, Desean Jackson, Marques Colston, Stevie Johnson, Reggie Wayne, Brandon Lloyd. It will be criminal if we don't add someone solid, with this group available. Wallace would be my 1st choice, but I'm not going to give up the picks needed to get him, because he'll certainly get the highest tender he can get. My order of preference would be as follows..... 1 Desean Jackson- him and Bennett would make for a solid pairing, although his attitude will probably keep us away. 2- Vincent Jackson- So he's 29? He's still excellent for now and probably will be for 2-3 more years anyway. 3- Dwayne Bowe- A change of scenery would do him good. 4- Wes Welker- Would have him higher, but Pats will franchise him if they have to. 5-Marques Colston- Don't see him leaving either. 6- Stevie Johnson- Not a difference maker at all, but an upgrade for us. 7- Reggie Wayne- My honest guess at who we get. Old, past his prime guy, ala Moose. 8- Brandon Lloyd- Don't see us going here again.
  6. While I know they have til the 20th to release the winning team's name and all, I think I remember reading his team was DEFINITELy accepting the bid, under any circumstance. So, I'm hopeful we'll hear something on him later today.
  7. Keep in mind the back end of this deal becomes a lot less risky, with a new TV deal on the table for the Cubs most likely in 3 or 4 years.
  8. He's also evidently said he prefers the West coast. I'm sure we've done all the research we can do, so if we're the high bid, I'm guessing we'll be fine with signing him.
  9. For what it's worth, Jayson Stark said today the Cubs are leaders for Fielder and it's probably where he wants to play. Then, the guy on PSD who is money, said you can delete "probably" from that.
  10. If we're going to have FielderFan, I think it's only fair to have FielderFanny as well.
  11. I think we took him off the 40 man last offseason. He rehabbed all year. I was hopeful he'd make it back and give us another back end of the pen option.
  12. Non Roster Invite, per Dylan Hernandez. Put this down in the "what could have been" file for us.
  13. Detroit is who I'd love to trade with for Garza. Turner and either Porcello or maybe Turner and 2 of Oliver/Smyly/Crosby. I want pitching badly in return, if I'm dealing away Garza.
  14. pretty underwhelming group right there Yep. Along with the guys Rob mentioned, this is basically it for this year and maybe even the few seasons after. Montero is a possibility, I suppose, but I really see him DHing for NY. So, while it's POSSIBLE to get bigtime production elsewhere, that's not coming through FA either this year or next. So, you have to find an elite bat to trade for, when we truly don't have the pieces to go get one AND have anything left in the farm. It's just going to be extremely hard finding bigtime bats. I say go ahead and overpay Fielder. We can easily surround him with enough over the next year and next offseason, to where we should get 3-4 years of borderline elite production out of him and inside the next contending window we open. At that point, the system's in better shape, maybe Vogelbach is ready, or maybe we've gotten bigtime production elsewhere by then. To me, it's a risk to sign Fielder to more than 5-6 years, but I'm OK with it. Because I just don't see finding elite hitters to be all that easy over the next several years.
  15. Alonso has no where NEAR Fielder's power. Not even close. And he's a worse 1st baseman as well. To me, he's a top 75ish prospect, who's better suited for the AL. In no way, shape or form should he be the centerpiece of a trade for Garza. Theo's said we need to be overwhelmed in order to move Garza? Well, this ain't it. Not close.
  16. The bottom line is the pickings are pretty damn slim for the future at 1B. Now granted, you don't have to have elite production out of 1B if you're getting it elsewhere. Anyway, a few other names I could see hitting the market within a year, if they're not already would be Daniel Murphy(supposedly is now) Michael Morse, Billy Butler, Matt LaPorta, Brandon Belt, and Justin Morneau.
  17. We do. Better be quickly too.
  18. If we miss out on Prince, the only possible "try and win now anyway" guy is Morales, if he's healthy. You could go add Darvish and Cespedes and possibly be the favorites in the division. But Morales would have to hold up and Cespedes would have to be solid in year 1 too. So, still tons of questions. If we miss on Darvish and Fielder though, it may be time to trade Garza and have a rebuild season, hope some guys become assets and go from there. But, I doubt we miss on one of them anyway.
  19. In the latest ASK BA, Callis was asked about Jorge Soler and said he probably would have been drafted behind Harper, Taillon, and Machado in the 2010 draft. Profiles kind of like Bubba Starling, but probably moves to RF, even though he has the speed for CF. He'll probably show up in the 11 to 20 range in the overall top 100 for them. He also reaffirmed he and anyone else can sign before July 2nd for any unspecified amount of money and thinks he'll receive 20 mill or so. Also said, that the penalty for going over the spending limits is only a taxation on the overage, not the entire amount along with not having the ability to sign guys over a certain amount. If this is the case for the draft as well, it's a very good thing.
  20. Well, I was hoping he'd wind up in the AL, but it just probably took them out on Prince completely, so Aramis may have helped us one last time as it is.
  21. This is where NL teams are at a distinct disadvantage. An AL team will offer Prince 7 or 8 years, no question in my mind. If he doesn't get 190 mill, probably 200 even, I'll be very surprised.
  22. Brett brings up a very good point today at BN about Morales: If he's going to be dealt, it could happen today, since they said they "expect to tender him a contract". Not that they will tender him one. I don't buy them playing Trumbo at 3B and Morales DHing personally. This could be Theo's shot at finding another Ortiz, if he's healthy. Plus, if you have him for 3 mill or whatever his salary will be, it certainly leaves you all kinds of flexibility to sign Cespedes and Darvish as well, or other bigger type moves. I doubt he'd cost a bunch in trade either, so if he's healthy, this wouldn't be something I'm opposed to at all.
  23. Lakers will offer Gasol and Bynum. Take back Turkoglu and use their 15 mill worth of player exceptions to go find a power forward. No one's going to top that kind of offer. They'll probably get Billups too.
  24. I think Garza is an excellent pitcher. But, he IS coming off his best year in the bigs. At his age, teams could easily think he's entering his prime and it's a decent bet that he is. But, if not, and this was his career year, his value won't ever be higher. To me, it's almost a coin flip. I guess I would still need to see a package much better than what we gave up for him though, in the end.
  25. Today on Talking Baseball, Levine mentioned the Cubs don't want to trade Garza, but talked to Texas and 3 other teams about him during the Meetings. He said if the Cubs were to trade him, it'd require 2 top minor leaguers from a team's system who are close to the majors, a major leaguer to fill a hole, and 2 other top minor leaguers. Levine's right, they don't want to trade him basically. But if that price gets met, I don't think anyone could turn it down. A guy on Fangraphs held a minor league chat and was asked what type of package Texas would need to give up and he replied with Ramirez, Ross, Villanueva, and Alfaro. Honestly, that's not a bad package, but I think I'd pass. Even though that's probably 3 guys that'd fit into our top 10 and another in the top 15. I think we can do better than Ramirez as a headliner. Replace Ross with Perez though and I'd be thinking hard on it, but would try to turn Villanueva and Alfaro into Olt.
