  1. Chance? Sure. Role? Unknown. He is what he is, a polished lefty that throws strikes. He'll be in Iowa, and he's more than a JR Mathes type, so there's a chance he sees the bigs, particularly if the rotation slots line up. Pen lefty situation looks solid enough that I doubt he'd get called up for pen duty unless they wanted a long man type. More of a Ted Lilly type ceiling kind of guy?
  2. Well, no, not after the completion of an inning, but all he said was after the 9th. And they could have a lead after 9.5 innings.
  3. Cubs are 49-0 when they lead at the end of the 9th inning or later. :D You sure we haven't taken the lead in extra innings and blown it this year? There wouldn't be extra innings if we lead after the 9th ;) False! What if they're on the road smart guy? :D
  4. He can't really be any worse than what gets run out there every other night lately.
  5. I agree with this. Lugo certainly acted like he was out. he probably was out. but the replay doesn't show it clearly, and from the ump's perspective it probably looked like he whiffed on the tag. it's a borderline bad call, and certainly not even close to the worst blown call we've ever seen. That was what I thought when I saw it at full speed the first time. I'm still not convinced he tagged him, even with MLB's admission.
  6. The average major league 2B this season has hit .255/.316/.379 Barney is at .300/.328/.369 In other words, because of Barney's lack of plate discipline and power, he's only managed to be an average 2B despite his .300 batting average. So yeah, it's possible to be a productive ML player... but you aren't going to find many stars without real secondary skills. I don't think you will find many people (especially around here) too happy if Vitters winds up being a comp to Darwin Barney so not sure why it is relevant to be using him as an example of how Vitters can be successful without taking walks. Thank you....that's what I was thinking too. Yeah, Darwin Barney production out of a corner position sounds, well, terrible. Especially if it's 1st base (as it seems likely he won't stick at 3rd). Double whoosh! That wasn't anything close to a comparison, just an illustration of how a lack of secondary skills (i.e. patience) will result in average/below average production in spite of a good batting average. Which is where it appears Vitters may be headed at this point. He's obviously going to hit for a lot more power than Barney, but if his IsoD never gets above .030, he's not going to be nearly as dangerous/productive as his contact skills give him the potential to be.
  7. I call BS on that. Look, I live in St. Louis and don't find that remotely hard to believe. Between the blue hairs and the rednecks, there are so many "sheep" in Cardinal nation (yeah, just puked in my mouth a little there) that it's not remotely surprising that somebody would try to make that argument. Not to mention there's really just a lot of dumb people out there, and I'm not just talking about Cards fans.
  8. Chris Young would have to go in the low risk/decent reward pile. Well, if you could avoid pitching him on any days when the wind is blowing out, maybe.
  9. He's on such a tear that it's somewhat ridiculous. Also hearing that his glove is actually playing fairly well at short. Not really a bet to stay there long run, yet, but if any of this power surge is legitimate, he would be an intriguing 2nd base option. But as good as hes been lately, my perception is that hes more Darwin Barney than anything. Comes down to how much of this power development is legitimate. He'll probably never be as good as Barney as a defensive player. It's still more likely, if not probable, that Watkins most likely scenario is as a IF/OF utility player, if he even makes it up, but I think he has a little better starting upside than someone like Barney (at 2nd base). Others have noted before that Watkins bat always showed well in practice, but it never translated to game power, so let's see if this is the start of something. So, Todd Walker-ish ceiling then?
  10. Good lord, I think my eyes are bleeding from the horrible grammar and punctuation. Do editors, or somebody else, not proof this crap any more?
  11. So, we're totally fucked now, eh?
  12. Doesn't he have a history of doing that though? I remember somebody breaking down his numbers in the minors and he had a weirdly high infield pop up rate if I'm remembering right. If that's the case, he could just be a statistical outlier in the fly ball pitcher category.
  13. Am I reading this right? I thought that was strange too! Also, Rasmus wouldn't be good in Wrigley. He's already terrified of the wall at Busch, there's no way in hell he's going anywhere near the bricks and ivy. He's also in general not very good at going back on balls, so he has to play deep because he actually is decent at coming in and getting the ball. Not going to kill you in CF, but not a huge asset either.
  14. Better to keep quiet and be thought an idiot than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.
  15. OK, I hate Berman and how he makes this thing nearly impossible to watch, but Cano winning it with his dad pitching is probably about the coolest thing that could have happened.
  16. I have to agree with this. There's definitely a big difference between filler guys and high ceiling long shots to make it. I'd rather get the long shots at this point considering the current strength of the minors in terms of middling ML talent.
  17. I don't think he's a type A. And there's no reason to hang on to Pena past the waiver deadline. Maybe the prospects work out, maybe they don't, but there's no reason to pass up a chance to add depth to a pretty thin farm system so we *may* have a better chance of resigning him. Pena isn't terrible, but if we don't add Pujols or Fielder in the offseason, there's a pretty good chance we'll be bad again. The Cubs do not lack depth in the system. They lack quality. That's debateable, It really isn't. No, it really isn't. There's a ton of potential major leaguers in the system but nobody who's even close to being a sure fire .900 OPS guy for 10 years.
  18. Szczur was gone for over a week for his graduation - the team was 5-4. Remember the speculation on this board that he must have had a really good time. Not true. He was hurt and gone for graduation. The time frames just happened to coincide.
  19. Has he been piggybacking or is the 4 GS wrong? And those are some interesting reverse R/L splits on the BA against.
  20. Is there any chance the Cubs offer him arbitration and get a pick or 2 of guys they like/need? That seems like a better option than trading him for guys who you have no use for.
  21. No kidding. That red was BS, Marta had as much jersey in her hand as the defender did. The encroachment call on the PK save was awful and the no call on the off side on Brazil's 2nd goal was at least questionable. Awesome to see them pull off the last second tie and PK win.
  22. This made me consider something. Thinking about hoe Hendry has kowtowed to what his managers have wanted in the past, is it possible that just replacing Crane Kenney could possibly be a solution? I mean, if the Ricketts are really going to push the player development angle, having a president in place to help prod Hendry along in that direction might work out okay. He's obviously got good relationships throughout baseball, and while I'd like to see him gone as much as everybody else, the fear that he sticks around wouldn't be as horrible of an option if he's got a "baseball guy" overseeing what he's doing. Just a thought.
  23. Well, I suppose that would work with no volume!
  24. Why aren't any of these games on any even remotely mainstream channels? I'd love to watch, but I don't get any of the games.
