  1. Was Brown held out all weekend because he wasn't ready to go Friday and the other 2 games were blow outs or are we looking at him to finish games until Palencia is back? I'm really curious to see how they deploy the pen with a lead right now. Also, please get a lead to protect because that's more fun than trailing all game.
  2. The only real optimism I have is that last season when DA got all his DBs back and healthy, the defense became an entirely different thing. Maybe his scheme just isn't as dependent on a big pass rush as many others are and that's why they went this route. I'm no expert but I agree with the sentiment of most here that this was disappointing because it didn't address what nearly everyone considered to be the biggest needs in a meaningful way.
  3. They play the Dodgers, not the Pirates. Stupid Derwood. 😜
  4. Probably more like the middle 3 innings because that place is a damn nightmare to get into, even when capacity was significantly reduced because of Covid.
  5. Obviously it wasn't out of the pen, but Assad threw 82 pitches on Sunday, so he's probably down for the day since I'd imagine Wednesday or Thursday would have been a regular throw day for him and he'll need another day to recover.
  6. Happ is a very good player and doesn't have a history of baserunning mistakes. I'm going to go ahead and say that he was probably correct in hesitating so he wasn't at risk of getting doubled off, especially when the guys who are paid to watch and talk about the game every day are in agreement he was in a tough spot to make that read based on where he was and the trajectory of the ball.
  7. Boog and JD both agreed it was a tough read and you just can't take a chance with no outs there.
  8. I'd expect Roberts back pretty quickly and depending on how Maton responds to his bullpen session, he could be back soon as well.
  9. I appreciate being proven wrong here. Nice job Michael.
  10. That feels like a missed opportunity that'll bite them in the ass with Sanchez on the mound.
  11. Matt Miller says Hecht is the best guy and a slightly slower version of Linderbaum. I'd love to see the Bears grab him if he's available at 89, but that's probably a little low for him.
  12. Based on what Matt Miller said to Bernstein on his podcast, probably not. This is just a bad draft and even the top guys at their positions would rate behind the top guys in the last 2 drafts. There's just not good top end talent level available. Now, if the cost of trading up is something completely reasonable because of that, yeah, maybe you consider it, but I'd be very surprised if that happens.
  13. All of this trade down talk is great, but with the board the way it is, who's looking to trade up? Unless Ty Simpson is still there at 25 and AZ or NYJ want back into the first to get the 5th year option on him, I don't really see a scenario where there's a good partner to match up with on a trade back.
  14. Yeah, those were both bombs to deep CF today. Even in Iowa, that's not something a guy with no power is doing with regularity.
  15. The bat speed being down makes me think something mechanical is going on or he's nursing some nagging injury like a sprained finger or something that's causing an issue but not necessarily bad enough to land him on the IL. I'd be shocked if a guy his age suddenly just lost it over an offseason.
  16. I think in the particular case of Cabrera, I'm willing to cut them a little more slack since he's only been in the organization for ~6 months and they may still be in the figuring out what works best for his stuff/arm slot/etc. phase. Generally, I definitely agree with your point and it feels like they know their arms aren't great and that's probably a big part of why they've leaned into defense as much as they have.
  17. That feels like oversimplifying it. Stuff+ is looking at a very specific aspect of what pitches do vs fWAR being an overall measure of how successful the pitching staff is. Seems like an apples to oranges situation. Like saying a team doesn't care about batting average vs WAR feels like a similar comparison to me.
  18. In his defense, Billy was never the problem.
  19. Doesn't Cabrera's FB grade out terribly in Stuff+ and the Cubs have him throwing it a lot more often? Feels like that's a likely explanation is those things are true.
  20. Yeah, but you had a developing Loveland and Burden for the first half of the season and Odunze was hurt for most of the second half. A full complement of receivers in the 2nd half probably would have made for not enough balls to go around.
  21. They're freshman so you never know how they're going to contribute, but adding someone else on top of Coleman and Morillo seems like overkill. I guess a real PG would be a nice thing to have but there just aren't any real holes in the roster right now
  22. I definitely agree that there were no good options there, but I don't think it's as cut and dry as you're making it out to be. My only real argument is that these run expectancies are calculated with generic MLB player at the plate based on the millions of times these situations have happened over 100+ years and don't account for a guy who's been a top 10 MLB player for going on 3 years now being at the plate. Is he prime Albert Pujols? No, but he's the best hitter in the Cubs lineup right now and if I was the manager in the other dugout, I think I'm going another route to not let that guy beat me.
  23. The people who gripe about Boog have clearly never spent any amount of time listening to other team's announcers that aren't the Dodgers, Mets, or Yankees. They're mostly just not good and some are downright unlistenable like whatever slop the Cardinals are throwing out there of late.
  24. Nico really needs to stop hitting those damn fly balls.
  25. Yeah, I don't think the system he runs needs a pure PG when everyone on the floor passes as well as most of these guys do.
