    Are you saying the 2016 defense graded out better by the metrics? If so, that's wild. Also, there's almost 2 months left so this team could conceivably get close to 35 fWAR.

    I'd bet Kelly, Thornton and Ferguson are at the top of the list. Rea will go to the pen, Assad to Iowa, and then it'll be interesting to see what happens when Cabrera is healthy, not to mention what happens when Palencia, Brown and Harvey are back with Steele and maybe even Shelby Miller waiting in the wings.

    I've had the exact same thought. Patience and hard ground balls are the hallmarks of their current strategy and it makes me wonder how sustainable it is.

    Jason can probably answer this better with data, but from my perspective you've got 2 things happening. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts, i.e., the combination of throwing all those pitches at different speeds with different break is more effective in reality than any of those pitches grade out individually. Then, you've got the perception of added pressure on the hitter when there are guys on base, which leads to more guessing and more poor contact/whiffs. I would be interested to see if he's throwing his sinker more with men on base to induce DPs than without.

    Those are the 2 things that really stand out to me. He's throwing 7 different pitches. And when you get the velocity variation with just another tick or two of separation, it throws the hitters off that much more. It'll be interesting to see if the uptick in velo sticks long term.

    Seattle has a full rotation and needs offense waaaaaaay more than pitching. I think that would be a major surprise.

    As long as they're offered before the current CBA expires, they'll be in effect for this offseason.

    -Alcantara: Feels like they hung onto him as a contingency plan for the offseason should things go sideways and they can't bring back Seiya. Probably a good fall back option all things considered. -Kepley: It's been mentioned already, but if we have doubts about him, you have to think other FOs do as well and maybe nobody was interested in spite of holding him back until the deadline -Rojas: Based on what Jason is saying, maybe giving him up for Holmes and Taylor wasn't an overpay? Seems like our FO and others saw him less favorably with a likely move off SS to 3B. -2027 Rotation: Cabrera, Steele, Brown, and Garrett feels like a solid base with Assad, Wicks, Wiggins, and Birdsell as viable options in addition to whatever they add via FA or Trade. And maybe they get lucky and Holmes exercises his player option. Overall, I can't gripe about any of the moves made individually or as a whole. They got arms for the playoffs this year, added a guy with promise for next year, added velocity to the pen for the next 4 years and didn't give up any prospects who they were relying on to contribute next year or even in 2028 probably.

    I think you have to reserve some judgement until we see what happens with Garrett. They got him for a couple guys who were entirely expendable and if they can get him healthy, he's probably going to be good.

    Yeah, I think so. It doesn't have the top end those teams do, but they both also have some offensive holes that the Cubs really don't especially with Taylor on board to take the RH ABs from Happ.

    A lot of people would say that the Tigers got an underwhelming return and that Hope isn't that good but has a decent amount of Dodger prospect helium. And they also have a starting 1B from that deal, which was previously a black hole of production.

    I said it elsewhere, but I'd be very surprised if the change in service time is applied retroactively to guys who are already "on the clock".

    He looked pretty good against the Brewers yesterday as well. He went 1.2 and had 4 Ks.

    I'd be pretty surprised if they make any changes to service time retroactive to guys who's clocks have already started.
