    He hasn't played a full NFL game in 3+ years, it's a short week, and while 38 in regular people years isn't an old man, it's ancient in NFL years. Also, some of those throws across the field were terrifying and I think a week of film study ends in some of those getting picked off.

    1. Joe Thuney earned his whole contract last night. Between the blitz pickup off the right edge from his LG spot to keep Keenum from getting absolutely obliterated and the neutral zone infraction he got called, some real savvy veteran play last night. 2. Barkley was tackling blitzers all night and never once got called for it. There was a clear arm bar on one play and he tackled a guy by the head on the very next snap. 3. No way I run Keenum out there again next week. A full game of film will allow the opponent to get some real scouting done and stop him from doing the things he was able to this week because, lets face it, as smart as he his and as well as he knows the offense, he just has some physical limitations that you can't ignore. Overall, absolutely fantastic game and while I'm still not sold on the defense, they may not be the abject disaster we were expecting.

    O'Connell hates him and thinks he's a moron. I'm shocked it's only a 5th but not surprised in the least they got rid of him to get something.

    Oh, I'm not excusing it in any way, just driving home the point that "F pitching, we can buy it later" has been an organizational philosophy for 15 years.

    Let's also not forget he inherited an essentially bare cupboard in the pitching department when he took over from Theo and that was kind of intentional on Theo's part. Jed just hasn't landed the Jake Arrietta that bailed Theo out of his pitching issues.

    At this point, I'm in favor of losing out, setting up the rotation, and going to ATL. I want no part of how hot the Padres have been or their bullpen of death. I think ATL is a much more winnable series.

    Agreed. The walks early were a problem but that inning he just got BABIPed. Ground ball where guys weren't, a pop up that probably is caught in 95% of other parks, and the Thielbar ground ball wasn't exactly scalded either.

    It was a pop up that landed 2" fair about 15-20' from the monster. Taylor slid for it to avoid colliding with the side wall and just missed.

    It's because you continue to fail to understand that the single most important thing a hitter can do is not make an out and PCA is miles better than that than Dawson was, especially in his MVP year.

    Wasn't some of the hesitation allegedly related to wanting to see how he responded to more frequent game activity? Or do you think that was a smoke screen to buy extra time and keep the pressure off him? As an aside, I discovered today that you and the lead singer of the band Seven Mary Three are name twins. 😂

    No, they already have 28 guys on the roster so the 27th man rule that's in effect for most of the regular season doesn't apply.

    I'd also refer you to the article Matt put out this morning referencing the failed bunt attempt by Shaw in Milwaukee. We've repeatedly seen him unable to get a bunt down in a critical situation, and not just this season. He put a player in a position he was very likely to fail because he doesn't possess the skill to execute what was asked of him right now, and that's the other piece of the blame I put on him.

    He ended up with a worse matchup in the 8th inning as well with runners at first and second. Again, I hated it because there were no more LHB available on the bench to go against a predominantly RHP bullpen and it burned them in regulation and extra innings.

    *cough*Brewers*cough* But yeah, you're right, it's mostly related to created opportunities because of how many guys they get on base and in both the Cubs and Brewers cases, how often they're stealing or taking an extra base that may not necessarily get chalked up to an error, but the defense doesn't make a play they probably should and a run scores.

    I'm squarely placing the blame on Counsell. There was no reason to pinch hit for Conforto in the 6th inning, especially when you know there aren't many lefties in the Marlins pen and you don't have any other LHB on the bench. Shaw was awful in every AB, either flailing at pitches in his eyes or the pathetic attempt at the bunt. He was 0-4 and all of them came against RHP (yes, him coming is was the reason for a pitching change). I hated the move when it was made and it very likely negatively affected the outcome of the game.

    That looks way better than I would have expected at this point.
