  1. I think Depodesto is kind of perfect for the joke. Not a huge name that would put everyone's April Fools senses on alarm, but big enough, especially with the bio, to really peak interest.
  2. Funny saying this but Kruger was probably a more sexy hire than either of these 2 at the time. Kruger was in a hard to win situation with Jimmy Collins around. I think a lot of people thought that Self's success at Tulsa was still some holdover from Tubby Smith. Weber was not Illinois first choice, but I do not remember who all was considered, I think there was a lot of talk about Sampson at the time.
  3. this is news to me
  4. off topic. Today is the 15th anniversary of The Game between the Wings/Avs. Still easily one of my 5 favorite games of all time in any sport. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOCXfu_mWyY&feature=related
  5. I trust Ricketts, Theo and Hoyer will get things changed, but the Cubs poor track record of drafting/signing and developing positional players has been a long term issue that goes way beyond one or two regimes. Heck it covered both the Wrigleys and the Tribunes ownership years. Most of the issues were both ownership groups never really made player development a top priority with the checkbook. Under the Wrigley's the Cubs were the last MLB team to create their own minor league system. That kind of thinking stayed with ownership until they sold. The Tribune was obviously more into marketing. Ricketts clearly investing a lot of money into player development has to be a huge upside for the future of the Cub's system.
  6. Both Stevens and Smart turned down other jobs last year. I have a hard time believing this is all on Thomas.
  7. So baseball, and so White Sox. this is in no defense of Cooper's stupid statement, but the White Sox seem to have rather healthy pitching in Cooper's tenure. I think sometimes a certain amount of success makes it hard to see how change would be good.
  8. I am sure this has been covered already but Vern, Bill and the officials made the OSU/Syracuse game almost unwatchable
  9. Wow, how OLD are you? I must be really OLD...I have seen 3 Indiana Championships
  10. compared to the blues, canucks, red wings, and predators they are. those 4 teams are in another class. playing dallas over any of them is a much easier series. why wouldn't you hope we play them? don't the stars have a negative goal differential? Clearly you have not seen that red wing team play lately
  11. The Preds adding Radulov makes them kind of a wild card. I think Pred fans are overplaying how much of an impact he is going to give, but he certainly is a talent.
  12. Not sure which CFB thread to put this. MSU and Oregon are doing a home/home in 14/15. Which is no big deal, but while looking at the schedule for those seasons I noticed that MSU and ND still do not have games scheduled. I also noticed that they do not have any open dates on the same weekends. I do not follow scheduling that much. So I was wondering is this traditional rivalry coming to an end? Is there issues with getting a new agreement in place?
  13. in (maybe?) unrelated news, projected '13 UM starter Evan Smotrycz unexpectedly decided to transfer :( this seems odd.
  14. Yeah the Wings are currently going through a swing similar to what the Hawks went through a while back. It is almost hard to see how Detroit could win a game currently.
  15. The forearm may have been legit, but Zeller's flopping is probably why he got away with it.
  16. On the rise or regression to the mean? I see a lot of mediocre. We have lots of high upside guys in the lower levels. Baez, Vogelbach, Maples, Candelario, Hernandez, Golden, Wells, all have the ability to show up on top 100 lists. Szczur, McNutt, Vitters, and Lake all will likely retain their status or possibly improve on it, by this time next year. We've added Concepcion, it's certainly possible we'll add Soler, we'll probably sell off a few more vets between now and this time next year, and we've got 4 top 70 picks in the draft, including number 6. The system is definitely on the way up. Nobody can deny that we have a lot of exciting guys to watch at the lower levels. However, there are no sure things in the minor leagues, even at the upper levels and with guys as young as the group that our farm system is relying the heaviest upon, you never know how many of them will even make it to AA. yes, so the best thing is to have as many prospects as possible to hedge your bets. Which seems to be the direction that the Cubs are going right now.
  17. Yeah, it doesn't seem like effort is a problem, now it's ability.
  18. I think that would be a good 4th line, my fear would be that Q would play Carcillo more on the 2nd or 3rd lines.
  19. #-o Gehrig He didn't know how to spell Gehrig so he thought no one would notice if he spelled his first name Lew
  20. wrong wendelstedt in the thread title
  21. I have decided to keep my personal happiness with the new regime by keeping my expectation levels real low this year. That is why I am predicting a 60 win season.
  22. Ken Hitchcock is the master at the quick turnaround.
  23. Not saying Dale Murphy should get in because I don't think he should. I don't think he had the longevity that most voters want. He did have a hell of a peak though. Murphy had a six year peak where he averaged .289/.382/.531/.913, 145 OPS+, 36 HR, 105 RBI, 110 runs, 18 SB, and won 5 gold gloves. My guess is that in 1984ish Future Hall of Famer was often used when talking about Dale Murphy. If I remember correctly he went from really great to really bad in 2 seasons. As for the trivia I know the player who played for the winning Pirates and one of the overall #1s who didn't make it to the majors. I looked it up and would have never gotten the other guy
  24. I hope the Hawks do well tonight for your benefit
  25. San Jose has several games in hand...but they are currently 7th and really struggling. The Kings who probably made the biggest splash close to the deadline are currently 9th. I know the Hawks are struggling but it seems really contagious right now.
