  1. They don't play college football on new years anymore They play enough for me:)
  2. So I was at a lunch today with mostly Illinois fans of varying levels. To a man they were cheering for Va Tech tonight. They were surprised that I was cheering for Michigan. I just mentioned that I always cheer for B1G in non conference games. I also said that my guess is that probably at least 1/3 of all MSU fans were probably pulling for Michigan to win but wouldn't mind if they lost, which is really were I am. Anyway the reason I point this out is because living in Illinois country I have noticed that Illinois fans seem to cheer against Michigan and OSU no matter what. I don't get this. Illinois is nothing more than a conference rival of either school. Illinois record against Penn St is just as bad but they do not seem to hate them, at least not until recently. Illinois fans just seem to have no conference pride when it comes to football. I have also noticed that in BB Illinois fans seem to have a lot of conference pride when it comes to the Tourney. They seem to cheer for Michigan and OSU with no problem in the Tourney.
  3. The only Winter Classic I have ever watched is the Hawks/Wings game in Wrigley because I am a big college FB fan. Wings fans are pretty sure they are getting the Winter Classic next year in the Big House or Comerica. My guess they will play either the Hawks or the Leafs if they play in the Big House. They would need a decent road team draw to fill 110,000 seats I would think.
  4. I am so glad MSU ended up winning after having to listen to Jon Gruden for 4 hrs. I really thought MSU was a better team than Georgia and it drove me crazy that they somehow got behind by 16 points.
  5. I think it sucks...but I could care less about the NFL most of the time
  6. Northwestern is making this game entertaining.
  7. I have no rational for believing this(except for listening to the score) but I have always believed that Quentin would still have a couple of more years like he had in 08. Probably will not in Petco
  8. I was checking Ron out on baseball reference(because someone in another post compared Ron's career OPS+ with Bill Madlock.) Anyway, Ron never even received 50% or the vote for the HofF from the BBWAA. His first year he only received 4%. I have never been over the top about Ron getting in the Hall, but come on.
  9. I was chatting with a Hawks fan this morning about tonight's game. He was saying that this year is actually the first year since the Hawks rebirth that there may actually be a good fight for the division crown. I thought about it and realized that he was right. There really has been little drama about who was going to win the division the last 3 years.
  10. [quote name="Conky" What are the poor results you are alluding to here? If you are going to call out the front office' date=' please enlighten us with your perceived mishandling of the team thus far under Epstein and Hoyer. Salty Saltwell? Really? A google search and 1 minute read told me that he was the one that traded Bill Madlock for Bobby Murcer. Is that the type of front office you see here?[/quote] I think at the time BA was way over rated, which has made this trade seem a lot worse than it really was. If I remember correctly Madlock only had 1 or 2 more really good years in his career after he left the Cubs. Murcer and Ontiveros were not very good, but they both put up at least 1 solid season for the Cubs. I can easily think of 3 much worse trades that the Cubs have made.
  11. I would think that signing a player for the purpose of trading him in July would be a bad precedent to set.
  12. http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news;_ylt=AiC7rv63RrVSeewcwgZ4Xy4cvrYF?slug=pf-forde_notre_dame_rivalries_big_ten_pac_12_122811 Interesting article about ND and the B1G/Pac 12 schedule starting in 17. I think some of the interesting parts of it are the thought that there may actually be a playoff in the near future or that there will be no AQ for BCS games. So going forward you may see more schools schedule better games for SOS.
  13. I thought it was between ND, UM, Alabama and (giggle)Indiana. When did LSU join the mix?
  14. Leonard would probably be a top 15-20 NBA center right now. The lack of big guys who can defend the post and score without tripping all over themselves in the NBA right now is insane. It's probably the weakest the center position has ever been. A guy like Nene is probably a top 5-8 center in the entire league. Leonard will be a first round pick forsure, the only question is if the rest of this season and the workouts gets him into the lottery. I am not sure that he is that good of a defender. Whenever I watch it seems he does not do a good job keeping his body square between his guy and the basket and often is trying to block shots from behind. I know I am an MSU fan and Izzo stresses positioning and blocking out. I am quite sure that Illinois bigs are not taught the same. Maybe I am wrong but Illinois bigs seem to try to deny too much and often get themselves out of position for rebounds.
  15. Am I the only one missing Leonard as a pro prospect at this point? At least NBA, I guess there are plenty of pro leagues where he could play.
  16. Pedro, to be kind, Sucked last year. The optimist in me says he'll be OK. There's just too much power there. As for position, even before he was drafted, people were saying he'd eventually be a 1B. He's a big guy who has a reputation of not being mobile. Let's see what happens this season. Many pirate fans have written him off already. Me? I think there's too much talent there. He's supposedly in great shape right now. Let's see what he does this year. Having said that, his output last year is why we got McGeehee (sp?) What? You got Casey McGehee because of Alvarez's poor season? This is a glaring example of why the Pirates are the worst organization in professional sports.
  17. I don't think there would be much excitement about any form of a Baylor/Boise St/Michigan match up either.
  18. I go to more Chiefs games every year than Cubs games. It is a lot of fun. I do not think I have ever been there when it was full.
  19. my question is why did the Giants not get in on this? They really need more offense and have some available cash.
  20. Terry Bowden takes over at Akron. I think this is a good move for a school like Akron. Also, if Bowden can make Akron a MAC contender than you would think that he could easily land a mid to low level AQ job.
  21. agreed. Also, I am sure there would have been some huge outrage if Hendry resigned Marshall to a 5+ million a year contract extension during the season.
  22. This seems like a good bargain. Minnesota always seems to have 3 Jason Marquis caliber starters, so may as well get Marquis.
  23. I am okay with the punishment, more than I expected. I read that Tressel has a show cause order for 5 yrs. Since his failure to report was the biggest issue that seems fair. I bet OSU is really regretting not passing on a bowl game this year now, because I am quite sure OSU will be a lot better next year.
  24. OSU sanctions come out today. I predict that the NCAA will add a couple more scholarship restrictions to what OSU has already self imposed.
  25. The last regime would have made some trades. We should probably never, ever make a trade either. Also, the last regime would have sent scouts out to look at young players. Better stop that, too. The Cubs are bad almost entirely for this: http://www.baseball-reference.com/draft/?query_type=franch_round&team_ID=CHC&draft_round=1&draft_type=junreg& Since 2002, they have gotten a combined -1.1 bWAR from their first-round picks. -0.8 bWAR from their second-round picks. Later rounds aren't much better. If the Cubs had anything resembling a decent amateur scouting and development staff, they'd have been fine despite the "bad" contracts which weren't really that bad. exactly. But that still does not mean that the new regime should just toss money around this year. If they feel that the money is right than certainly go ahead and sign some players. But they should not overpay for players to just be competitive this year or appease fans. I do not know if Darvish will end up being overpaid, but the Cubs made the bid that they made and it didn't win, so be it.
