  1. I think it will eventually. I am sure they will always have at least one full OT period though. Maybe another 5 min 4 on 4 then a shootout. I think there will be some fluke year with 3 or more triple OT games and TV will demand that they do something. I don't think TV hates it all that much, and I think they are much more likely to do something like breakdown the 2nd/3rd OTs into short duration than have a shootout. We're talking about a program that airs in the middle of the summer, when there's virtually nothing else on. And most games are on cable stations and not networks, so I don't see the issue. Could be right. They do not have any TV timeouts in OT, so it seems that the powers to be would just as soon that it finished as soon as possible than get ads on, so I just assumed they wanted them over. Of course NHLN and NBCSN are different animals than ESPN.

I think there will be some fluke year with 3 or more triple OT games and TV will demand that they do something. Shootouts in the playoffs would ruin one of the coolest things about playoff hockey. I'd have a hard time watching non-Blackhawks games at that point. I don't disagree, I am just saying that once they allowed them in the regular season it would just be a matter of time. I understand TVs position, I just think it would suck. I also think a lot of teams would rather gamble with a shootout than a triple OT game.

  4. But the comment was made that you could probably go as far back as the 60s and not have anybody surpass Soto's total. I thought the initial comment also did not include pitchers, which the Cubs have done fairly well with. Davis was a rule 5 I think, he was from the Cardinals anyway. Just off the top of my head there is only a few position players from the Cubs system who have played more than 3 seasons with the Cubs since the 60s. Dunston, Grace, D Smith(kind of), Soto, Castro...I am sure I may be missing some, but can't think of any off the top of my head. Probably some obvious one recently
  5. without doing any work on this, I would imagine you could take this all the way back to the mid 60s and it would be bad all the way. Dunston is probably the only one that comes to mind that would be above Soto
  6. I thought it was Illinois team strategy to foul on every possession in the 2nd half. Maybe I was just as blinded by my bias as you Illinois fans were obviously blinded by yours.
  7. NFL management makes it more of a personal health issue than a cheating issue. Not that it really makes a difference, but the message they give is more a health thing, therefore the press does not get their pants in a bind about it.
  8. Greg Luzinski played LF for some good teams I guess. Gary Maddox was a very good CFer though.
  9. I don't mean to make Dooley sound like some great recruiter (he wasn't), but even the guys I felt we had a really good shot at (Green, Marquez North) with him here are waffling pretty significantly (or have already committed elsewhere). It's been nice to have guys like Vonn Bell and Carl Lawson start showing some interest in us with Butch here, but both are still longshots and we're losing guys (Green is gone and North is 50/50 at best by recent reports) that were at least UT leans under Dooley. I really want to like this hire, but there's currently nothing to indicate hiring Butch was anything but shooting for steady mediocrity. I thought Green was kind of leaning Michigan the whole way, did that just come up after Jones took over?
  10. I am not a student of our farm system. I just read stuff here and some BA, BP and FG stuff. I like Vogelbach, but kind of assumed he would end up being trade bait unless Rizzo flames out. It seems that his body type/skill set would not make him a good choice for LF even if he can really bring a lot of power. I am more than hopeful that I am wrong about this. I understand that you mention that the FO is willing to be below average in LF defense, but it seems Vogelbach would be a stretch to just be below average.
  11. It is actually not old and slow that is killing the Wings. It is poor play from defensemen. They are really not playing any particularly old players right now. Though I think Bertuzzi will be back tonight to change that and Franzen plays like he is 38. They do have a lot of players in their early 30s though. Now that I think about it Cleary and Samuelsson are about 35. But they lost Lidstrom and Stuart and basically replaced them with Brendon Smith and Colavacheo(sp). I think Smith will be a solid NHL defenseman but is still young. Colavacheo got hurt which helped lead to the signing of Kirk Haskins. Ericsson and Kindle should return soon to help, but they are not Lidstrom or Stuart either.
  12. Play Emery against Detroit...I think Columbus may currently be better.
  13. Kirk Gibson only played 3 full seasons of MLB. I wonder if Kirk Gibson ever considered this fact.
  14. I was excited at first. Then I remembered the Wings are a borderline playoff team at best and my excitement waned.
  15. So to keep this all straight, the ND fans think that Te'o is a exaggerating dummy. ND haters think he is a lying dummy at minimum but possibly a huge lying scumbag. So it is either bad or really bad. Can't seem to get my mind around how he is not complicate in some level of some fraud.
  16. So, I have spent some time looking at rosters. Not sure how the schedule is going to play out yet but decided I am going to make my central division picks. I am not going to give point totals or anything, since I do not want to do the work it would take to figure it out in a shortened season...yes I am that lazy. So here goes Hawks Blues Wings Preds BJs I think the Hawks are the safest pick. I think we pretty much know what they are, great core with potential to be an elite team. One of the main reasons for the Blues success last season was that they played every game like it was game 7 of the playoffs. I feel the shortened season will make most teams play with that level of intensity most nights. That being said the Blues still have less questions than Detroit and Nashville. Nashville's style with the talent they have will make them a solid but not spectacular team(yawn) again. Detroit will probably struggle getting the puck out of their zone. Howard is a good goalie, but will have to play on his head to make the Wings an elite team. Detroit may actually be better offensively this year, a couple of interesting young forwards coming in. Blue Jackets may set a record for least amount of points in a season. Hawks and Blues make playoffs easily. Wings and Preds battle to get in.
  17. If BR's Similarity Scores are to be believed... The two most similar players to Fred McGriff were Willie McCovey and Willie Stargell. The two most similar players to Curt Schilling were Kevin Brown and Bob Welch. Who is the most similar player to Schilling in the self righteous jag category?
  18. I don't get why it is assumed that Biggio was clean. Also if you didn't vote for Bonds how could you vote for Piazza? I think it is for reasons like this that they should just put them in based on the numbers and let public opinion be what it is....opinion.
  19. So after much angst I have decided to cheer for Alabama to win tonight with a 1 point safety. 1-0. Then in the coming months have allegations come forth that they are cheating and for ND to get in trouble for hazing incoming freshmen players by having them play choir boy.
  20. I think the All Star game was cancelled awhile back. I think most of the players playing in Europe were doing so with the understanding that they would return to the NHL once the lockout ended. Those under NHL contracts have to come back.
  21. Well the Wings spent 2 mill on Bertuzzi and 3.5 mill on Ericsson. So the Hawks are not the only team that has made some questionable resignings No doubt. Been reading about teams that set themselves up well knowing a cap reduction was coming, the most notable being Colorado. I suppose it wasn't possible for the Hawks to do that with so much high-priced talent though. I misread CapGeek. The Hawks cap hit next season is 57 mill

  23. http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=412844 Here is the latest from TSN. still no decision on the schedule. I do not really understand the cap for the first season. $60 mill prorated but teams can spend up to $70 mill. Does this mean they will have a cap penalty in the future? Not sure and the story really didn't explain it well. I have been messing around on CapGeek this morning and I think the Hawks will have some issues next off-season. They are already committed to almost $60 mill on 17 players. Next seasons cap will be $64.7 mill. They can buyout up to 2 players the next couple of seasons. Not sure what the buy out percentage is. Still seems like they would have to pay a lot of money to not have players count against the cap. Honestly, I think they will have to consider buying Hossa out. Also, nothing on realignment. The players stopped that from happening this season, I figured they just did that to use as leverage in the CBA negotiations.
  24. Schedule has the Wings and the Hawks playing today!! Lets get it on:) Oh well. I am much happier about this then I expected. Even if the Wings are going to struggle to make the playoffs. I think in 94 they did not play any out of conference games.
  25. deal done!! http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=412844
