It does take a little out of the horse to run 3 races like that in a 6 week span, but more to the point, it's the type of horses jumping into these races. In the old days, there a few mega stables that put horses into the TC races. The smaller stables deferred to them, for lack of a better word, and didn't clutter the field with mediocre horses. Now that's changed, and you see all kinds of horses in the Bellmont, like the one who stepped on CC's hoof and damaged it in the backstretch. Not saying that's why he lost, but it is a change that may contribute to the long Triple Crown drought. More mediocre horses cluttering the field means more variables to fail to win the TC. All this is a moot point, because there's no way that the Bellmont is going to listen to Churchill or the Preakness or anyone else on who they put on their race card.
