    From my previous post: I'm not even saying it was definitely a Zambrano-Barrett issue, just that it seemed weird that 19 of 20 Zambrano starts correlate to either pitching well without Barrett back there or pitching poorly with Barrett back there. It's the weirdest pitcher-catcher correlation I've ever seen. If there indeed was an issue, though, then obviously something had to be done to fix the "staff ace". Either tell Zambrano to suck it up, work with Barrett to figure out what's up, or trade one of them. Obviously, Hendry chose option C and dumped Barrett.

    Again, they aren't meaningless. What I'm saying is that Zambrano had a problem with Barrett this year, and previous numbers, in that instance, are meaningless. There's no way to prove it, but if there wasn't a problem, it was an odd coincidence. If you're going to pretend that 1/2 of the season's worth of starts are meaningless, there's no reason to continue the conversation, because you've apparently already made up your mind and are unwilling to accept anything else.

    That I agree with. If the Cubs had to get rid of Barrett to keep Zambrano, I am all for getting rid of Barrett. Sure, but they didn't have to. That was the point. The numbers from this season are a meaningless sample size with plenty of varying factors. Checking out Barrett's overall numbers catching the staff in the time he's been here, he has been fine catching the Cubs pitchers. It's not so much a meaningless sample size, at best it's an odd coincidence that every single one of Zambrano's 8 poor starts were with Barrett catching, and 13 of his 14 other starts were with someone else catching. Is it Zambrano's problem as much as Barrett's? Absolutely, but something had to be done to fix the situation. Apparently, Hendry picked to dump Barrett.

    Carlos Zambrano, through June 1, had 4 quality starts out of 12. 3 of those QS's were with Blanco catching. Since the Barrett fight, Zambrano has 8 quality starts out of 8 starts. Barrett didn't catch any of them. Barrett caught 7 of the 8 non-quality starts, and the one Barrett didn't catch, Blanco caught him in a 5 1/3 inning, 2 run start that just missed being a QS. If ever there were an example of a pitcher and a catcher not getting along, that is it.

    Apparently about $900k. $5.5M of his $13M salary is being paid by the Pirates, half the remainder was already paid out by the A's this year, and they sent cash in the deal to cover a good chunk of the rest. So unless Blevins becomes the next Willis (:roll:), it's a no nothing deal with possible upside? Well, Blevins was doing impressively well this year as a reliever, but it is quite possible that Hendry actually sold high and bought low, here. Question remains whether "bought low" will actually translate into any improvement for a player like Kendall, though. Can't be worse than what Bowen provided offensively, and pitchers seem to really like his game calling ability, so hopefully that can be a non-issue. Not good at throwing runners out, but nobody has been this year for the Cubs.

    Gambler's fallacy. Starting 2-12 in 1 run games doesn't mean you're due to go 12-2. It means you're due to go 7-7. Law of averages, more so. Flipping a coin 100 times, even if 12 of the first 14 are tails, at the end of that 100 times it's most likely to even out. Sure, that next flip is still 50/50, and any single flip is 50/50, but at some point the greater average trends towards, well, average.

    Perhaps a large part of why the Cubs are winning more lately has to do with luck. It had to even out at some point, and after starting 2-12 in 1-run games, they are 10-3. Part of that has to do with the bullpen pitching better, part of it has to do with Lou using the pen better, and part of it has to do with some kind of attitude, as silly as it sounds. The only thing that the Cubs could possibly have benefitted from dumping Barrett is that possibly the attitude of the pitching staff is better. Which would be a shame if true.

    If only the Cubs had ready replacements for Jones and Izturis in their minor league system, they'd be pretty good offensively...

    i don't care about the white sox You don't live in Chicago. I'm more referring to the fact that the Brewers consider us their arch rivals, and most Cubs fans don't even refer to the Brewers as anything more then they do Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Houston i don't care about the white sox

    Every time the Cubs win, they essentially gain a 1/2 game on the league. Every time the Cubs lose, they essentially lose a 1/2 game on the league. As long as the Cubs keep winning, they'll gain ground in the league.

    Here's how I'm looking at it today: Worst-case scenario: Cubs are no worse offensively at catcher, Kendall relegated to backup role to Soto after not performing. Essentially the same as they were last night, minus a minor-league middle reliever. Best-case scenario: Perry figures out what was wrong with Kendall's swing, he starts hitting line-drives again, gets on base at a .380 clip in the 7 spot in the lineup, and significantly improves the team's OBP.

    :?: To make room for Kendall on the 25-man roster, someone needs to be sent down/DFA'd/traded/released. Likely candidate would be one of the two other catchers on the roster. If Soto is sent down, there's no chance of the Cubs losing a player. Uhm. There's room for Kendall. You do remember Cubs traded Bowen? They DFA'd Bowen before the game and brought up Petrick. So trading Bowen doesn't affect the 25-man roster. Someone still needs to be dealt with.
