  1. At this point I'm just hoping the Reds hit them hard at players.
  2. He always said he was an offensive catcher.
  3. I think that's unlikely. If Soriano doesn't return until Sept. 1 or later rosters will have expanded and there would be no need to send anybody down. That's true. Wow, it's August 14 already!
  4. 2 LF's and no CF ? Hey, the Cubs need to work with what they have. 5 LFs and a CF that's likely headed to AAA when Soriano comes back. :)
  5. That's true, but wasn't the US in Copa America (albeit briefly, though I think they eventually did score A goal)? Bah, I suppose it makes nominal sense, but I at least hope the US will field a competitive group, although I imagine attendance will be scarce with the game on the same day as Bears/Chargers.
  6. Why is it being marketed as the "Clash of Champions"? Is Brazil playing itself? :)
  7. Just curious out of all this...how is this a transaction?
  8. One of the more exciting strikeouts in recent memory.
  9. You know, the "you are all stupid" argument is generally what this board tries to prevent. Acquiring Podsednik, even if free, is redundant and pointless. Pagan is better than Podsednik defensively, and is faster. And he's already on the Cubs.
  10. And I can think of 5-6 pitchers that would probably be better on the team than Maddux. Grover Cleveland Alexander, Christy Mathewson, Lefty Grove, Mordecai Brown, Warren Spahn, Tom Seaver...it's debatable, though. Clemens definitely deserves to be on there, though, as disappointing as that may seem.
  11. How dare they mock a rival team! Yes, it's a completely necessary evil to come up with stupid nicknames and to circumvent the language filter to do so. I dislike the Cardinals as much as anyone, but stupid names are just completely childish and unnecessary.
  12. Joe Morgan should probably be on the blacks team also, possibly even starting at 2nd. He should never be allowed to speak, though.
  13. I know Sandberg is in there for mostly sentimental reasons, but I'd probably have Musial or DiMaggio in there before Sandberg. Maybe Rose, too, except I just don't like Rose. EDIT: Joe Jackson also.
  14. Wait, to be the primary left fielder until Soriano gets back? The Cubs already have 6 better options on the 25-man roster for LF until Sori gets back, and they all hit better than Pods.
  15. So, going after an OF that can't hit at all, let alone for power, can't field, and can only play LF to shore up an offense that can't hit for power and can't get on base. If this happens, and the Cubs give up something of value, and they actually play Podsednik, I will have given up all hope that this team was capable of doing something intelligent.
  16. Looking to set a new record for juvenile Cardinal names today?
  17. Gallagher threw 23 pitches last night and Eyre threw 15. Marmol hasn't pitched since Monday, so they probably wanted him to get some work in. Plus, a 10-2 game in Coors is like a 5-1 game anywhere else, and the Cubs are really desperate to break this streak.
  18. Probably for the best. I generally listen to Pat and Ron anyway, even while on the TV on Fox or ESPN.
  19. Second in total wins. The Giants have 10159 wins to lead all franchises. The Cubs have 9957 wins, with a very very small chance of reaching 10000 this year. Winning percentage wise, it depends on which teams you want to compare. Among pre-WWI franchises, the Yankees are far and away the best, with a .567 winning percentage all-time(!) The Giants are at .539, the Dodgers at .524, the Cards at .517, the Red Sox at .515, and then the Cubs at .514.
  20. I definitely agree with that. It's a much tougher schedule so I think their regular season record will drop a bit despite being a better, deeper team. We'll see...it might be a tougher schedule, but we also still have something like the 2nd easiest schedule in the league. yeah, we still play in the north--and we still play the same basic schedule that everyone in the north plays. Except everyone else in the North has to play the Bears, so it makes their schedules tougher on paper.
  21. I'm not saying I don't like this year's team and how it's come together. I do think the 04 and 03 teams were better, though, if only because they had a better offense. This team really needs to be more selective at the plate than they have been. Like they were tonight.
  22. Since June 3 (when the Cubs were 22-31 and arguably when their run towards the top started), the Cubs have played 26 games against winning teams, and 26 games against losing teams. They are 18-8 against losing teams, and 16-10 against winning teams. I'm not sure how that counts as fattening up on the weak teams. Sure, they're 2 games better against losing teams. Whoop-dee-doo.
  23. Wonder if there's any chance Wood could be activated before Thursday's game as an available arm in the pen. Although I'd be concerned that his first pitch may go about 100 feet.
  24. wuertz. hopefully marshall pitches a gem. Wood?
  25. To add to this, the Phillies are currently the sixth place team in the wild card race, at a mere 1.5 games back. Technically, the Cubs are first in the division, and thus have nothing to do with the wild card picture. The Dodgers are temporarily in first, pending the outcome of tonight's game.
