  1. Is it wrong that I am less concerned about the Cards than the Brewers because the Cubs can still directly and significantly affect the Cards' postseason plans?
  2. Single to shallow center would be all that was needed to bring Theriot home.
  3. An argument could be made that Marmol is the most valuable to the team for the time he's out there, but as a reliever his overall contribution simply can't compare to a starting pitcher or a positional player. http://www.hardballtimes.com has a Win Share "rate" stat that measures value per time, and Marmol does lead the team in that category (among players that actually logged significant time) Also, I suppose if you wanted to look at it empirically (and really like Win Shares), 3 win shares = 1 win, so I suppose the Cubs wouldn't be in first place without any one of the players with at least 6 win shares. That includes Ramirez, Lee, Soriano, DeRosa, Zambrano, Theriot, Jones, Hill, Lilly, Marquis, Floyd, Marmol, Dempster, and Howry. Sounds about right.
  4. The Reds may be the hottest team in the division right now, but for them to even finish 83-79 (catch the Cubs playing .500 ball) they'd need to go 21-7 to finish out the season.
  5. I severely doubt the Cubs have the best record in the NL since the ASB, as they are a whopping 3 games over .500 since then. Arizona, the Mets, Phillies, and Cincinnati are better. Mostly, the thing that bothers me is the thought process that says "The Cardinals have gained 8 games on the NL Central leaders since June", even though technically the Cubs were in 3rd place in June.
  6. I think Williams had a well-built team in 2005, but he didn't realize why it was well-built. He thought players like Podsednik and Rowand sparked the team with their SBs and they ground out games like the grinding grinders that they were. When, really, it was the insane amount of HRs and outstanding pitching that propelled them through the season and playoffs, despite having a .322 OBP.
  7. You clearly are not familiar with the Cubs' offense and its wonderful tendency to get shredded by a middling LHP. :D D'Backs - 132 runs (Worst in MLB), .238 BA (Worst in MLB), .309 OBP (Worst in MLB) vs. Lefties. D'Backs are only worse. So what you're saying is that the reason the Cubs switched Zambrano and Marshall was not so Zambrano would get to pitch more often, but so that Marshall could pitch to the D-Backs yesterday. :)
  8. I think the title graphic is going to make it through unscathed. :)
  9. I know you mean that in the best possible way. ;) I was thinking there's got to be a missing comma in there somewhere... ;)
  10. I'm just doing PBP for those who don't have gameday and are at work and I got peronally attacked for no reason earlier, obviously by children. Your posts have been just as childish as any in the thread. Act like an adult if you wish to be treated as one.
  11. Would it be possible to cut out the childish internet pissing match in a game thread where the Cubs actually lead by 8? BTW, calling someone "kid" doesn't make you seem any more mature.
  12. Gotta figure this to be a decent time to see what Piggy can do.
  13. a bomb. lol well played. I don't get you man. You claim to be a Cards fan, but you are neither obnoxious or mean spirited. They did win the World Series last year. If the Cubs won the WS last year, I'd have a tough time being either obnoxious or mean-spirited about this year.
  14. LOL, in Gameday for a minute it said "Pitching change: Mark Bellhorn replaces Mike Stanton" before realizing the double switch.
  15. If they can push the lead to 7 here, I'll be confident they'll hold it the next half inning.
  16. Rooting for sheer exhaustion. For both teams.
  17. Heh, Kendall has to be a serious pain in the rear to pitch to.
  18. Heh, baseball is fun when both teams are in the race. You know what would be even more fun. One of your talented players gets hurt. Make it a real race. Like Pujols maybe. Or Carpenter or something... Please they really wanna play the pitchers being hurt card with us??? You act as if the Cards haven't had any injury troubles this year. I mean, as far as pitchers being hurt, the Cubs have used more catchers than starting pitchers this year.
  19. Heh, baseball is fun when both teams are in the race. You know what would be even more fun. One of your talented players gets hurt. Make it a real race. Like Pujols maybe. Or Carpenter or something...
  20. At least if he doesn't make contact the inning won't end.
  21. I hate to say it, but at this point, I'd rather see Kendall up there.
  22. Single on a sharp ground ball to the pitcher? Did it go off him and dribble away or something?
  23. Heh, baseball is fun when both teams are in the race. Calling it a "race" at this point is a stretch.
  24. I feel conflicted for actually wishing the NL had a DH, but really only so the Cubs can continue to use Hill defensively.
