  1. It will be Jose Oquendo. Long shot candidates being Will Clark, Larry Walker or Mike Matheny. Oquendo still out to play every possible position, eh? :)
  2. I think that's the magic number, right there. Just win every series.
  3. Now, on the whole I have thought Lou has done a good job not overworking the starters, or most of the staff (except maybe Marmol and Zambrano). Looking at BP's Pitcher Abuse Points, though, Carlos Zambrano is on top of the list. Not only on top of the list, but he has twice as many PAP as the 8th guy on the list. I realize Carlos has never been the most efficient pitcher in baseball, but I have to wonder if this is cause for concern going forward, especially after giving Zambrano the extension. I also wonder how much he'll have left in the tank in the event the Cubs do make the playoffs. EDIT: On the other hand, Zambrano does have fewer PAP than he has since 2003. And wow, were Wood and Prior abused in '03.
  4. Quite simply, the purpose of the thread is to list Lou's mistakes. Says so right in the thread title. You know what to expect coming in.
  5. With today's win, the Cubs have now eliminated the Reds.
  6. Right there with you PH. In hindsight, it doesn't look like there was anyone that was a good candidate, among those that were talked about. Maybe Fredi Gonzalez.
  7. With tonight's win, the Cubs have (finally) eliminated the Pirates and Astros.

    NFL Week Two

Coward!!!!!!!!!! :-( Is it wrong that I picture Theodore Roosevelt while reading that? :)
  9. Cubs still have an outside shot at winning the season series from everyone in the division. If they can pull that off, they should win the division going away. Of course, it would take winning 5 of 6 from Cincy (5-7 at the moment, 4-2 would put them at 9-9) and sweeping the Pirates (also 5-7). I find it amusing, actually, that the Pirates and Reds have had the best records in the division since August 10: Pirates 21-17 Reds 19-15 Cubs 18-17 Brewers 17-18 Cardinals 17-19 Astros 14-20 Of course, I don't expect the Cubs to win 8 of 9 against those teams, but it would certainly take much of the drama out of the remainder of the schedule. 7-5 should be enough (say, 3-3 vs the Reds, and 4-2 against the Marlins and Pirates), but a lot hinges on how the Brewers do on the road this week.
  10. Cubs are 6th in MLB in OBA. Here are the splits by month: April - 6th May - 17th June - 2nd July - 5th August - 23rd September - 5th Simply too many walks by the pitchers. Especially in May and August. Too many walks for the pitchers, not enough walks for the hitters. Same tune, different year.
  11. I think it'd be difficult to be in favor of acquiring Tejada unless the Cubs managed to perform highway robbery. With the way he's been declining, he probably won't be worth what would seem like a "fair" price in players to get him. That said, he's still a significant offensive upgrade at a position where the Cubs just don't have significant offensive upgrades available in-house, unless Cedeno manages to look something like he does in AAA. Beyond that, there just aren't a whole lot of options for positional upgrades. Soriano locks up left field and can't be used in center, so the Cubs simply have to hope that players like Soto, Pie and Murton can provide an offensive boost in those areas.
  12. I'm gonna need that one explained to me. Post-ASB numbers through yesterday's game: Floyd: .280/.374/.449/.823 Murton: .300/.370/.533/.903 Granted, Floyd's weekend made the numbers a lot closer, but I would assume the fans wouldn't mind Floyd playing if he hit like he did this past weekend. Even with the weekend, at worst the numbers justify them splitting time evenly. It's just too bad that it's impossible to make a statistical argument without feeling the need to assert a personal feeling of superiority to help one feel better about himself.
  13. On ERA alone, he's had a good season for a 3rd starter, he's had an incredible season for a 5th starter, even looking at just peripherals. Oh, and Carlos Zambrano now has the worst ERA of our 5 starters. And Eyre's ERA+ is over 100! And Kevin Hart's ERA+ is 286. :) Actually, the only two pitchers on the Cubs right now with an ERA+ under 100 are Kerry Wood and Will Ohman. EDIT: Oh, and Steve Trachsel, but I like to pretend he's not on the Cubs.
  14. It's weird that the IU-U of I winner has an inside track to a bowl game, and even the loser could get a bowl bid too. Not sure if you'd call the entire conference better or worse because of that. Looks like at least this is the first year that nobody in the conference will be a cakewalk.
  15. hahaha, outstanding. Hell..... with Trachsel starting, we'd even lose to the Royals !!! Maybe that's just the Cubs' ploy to send Trachsel to KC on Thursday..."Hey Steve, we got a...uhh...makeup game against the Royals this Thursday, it says so right here in the paper. We want you on the first plane out there to get ready for the start."
  16. So, coming into the year I would have been surprised to see Illinois even win 2 games in the Big Ten, but now it looks like they'd have a fighting chance at Minnesota, and maybe even home against Michigan. Of course, they only looked good against Syracuse, but still...
  17. Well, when you say things like in the same thread, people don't need to reach far to be selective. For a while, I just assumed Meph/LoK was simply a joke account, using the names of demonic lords as a not-so-subtle attempt to be the "official board troll", as there's no way anyone can really be as self-absorbed as your posts appeared to be. Now, I simply think you enjoy posting flippant comments/insults to try to get a rise out of as many people as you can, in an effort to develop some form of board "infamy". It's a shame, too, because if you can just cut through the crap, there is a lot you are able to add to any statistical discussion that everyone can learn from, and not just those you deem worthy as if you were some baseball deity.
  18. Even after tonight, Dempster is still the 3rd best reliever on the Cubs, after Marmol and just after Howry. Dempster has still been far above average as relievers go, though. The ERA will fluctuate as a reliever, and he's struggled a few times in a row. But there's no need for a knee-jerk reaction to bury Dempster at this point in the season. Better that he struggles when there's a bit of a cushion, and not when there's a 1-run lead. He's only blown that one once. Twice if you count the 11-inning affair where the offense couldn't buy a run after the 3rd inning.
  19. How bout putting Dempster in a non-save situation??? Terrible decision tonight. Thank God it worked out. It did go from a save situation to a non-save situation in about 10 seconds after 2 outs, though. Hard to fault him for it, but it would be nice if Dempster could figure out how to get outs consistently, though. Truth be told, the Cub bullpen has been fantastic on the year, so they might have been due for a few bad outings. A pen of Dempster, Howry, Marmol, Wood, Eyre and Wuertz isn't too shabby, especially with how Eyre has pitched in the second half. Wuertz is at the back of the pen this year after being their best reliever last year.
  20. Yes, because this thread indicates that Lou never makes a good decision... Feel free to make a "Lou's good decisions" thread if it makes you feel better.
  21. Remember back in '98 when the Giants were 5 back of the Cubs and Mets with a week to play? Nobody's dead until they're mathematically eliminated.
  22. Hmmmm...not a bad start. I'd probably swap DeRosa for Hall (based on career numbers), move Lee to RF (remember, he has a surprisingly good arm), move Ramirez to LF, and move Soriano to 2B. I'd probably move Braun to LF and put Ramirez at 3B. Take the defense where you can.
  23. I just wonder if he will be able to handle the high pressure games to come, or if he will have a mental break again. What does it mean for a hitter to have a mental break? Just start swinging at everything, missing pitches by 6 feet?
  24. Pirates today look like they're fully into "Let's see what all 40 of these guys will be able to give us for next year" mode. Which means they'll throw 3 pitchers at the Cubs that they've never seen, and the Cubs' offense will be completely shut down by them. Meanwhile, the Cub pitching will be lights out, except when pitching to these opposing pitchers.
  25. Jones, Kendall, Fontenot due up don't count on it. Bright side to that is after those 3, there's about 4 in a row who can hit, so if 1 or 2 of them get on, the Cubs are in business.
