  1. If the Cubs lose tonight this is a big mistake. It's a mistake either way. They really can't afford to be banking on the playoffs, they need to throw the big guns out to get there Zambrano would be pitching on normal rest on Friday. Hill would get 2 extra days of rest in this scenario. I guess the Cubs just need to go out there and win tonight, then.
  2. Hopefully Trachsel on Thursday will turn out to be similar to Estes in Cincy that last Thursday in 2003.
  3. I wouldn't say the Cards have been tanking it. They just have a tendency to get blown out in losses, thus the Pythagorean record for them. Well, except against the Cubs last week, who didn't play well but managed 3 wins anyway.
  4. New sod is usually a bit of a problem. But there are 10 days before any potential game on that field, it should be in good shape by then. Football teams sometimes resod midweek, and there's a lot more starting and stopping in that sport. Odds are you'll see some clumps come up here and there, and it will be noticeable for the TV cameras, but given the time frame, a quality grounds crew should be able to make it playable and relatively safe. 5 days if there were a 1-game playoff. Not saying there will be, but...
  5. I would certainly hate this to turn into a situation similar to "well at least we have Prior and Wood for Games 6 and 7".
  6. Or...you know...the playoffs.
  7. Is it wrong to still be holding out hope that the Cubs finish with the best record in the NL? :)
  8. Have you seen the recent crowds at Florida? There might not be enough people on site to run the scoreboard.
  9. Hey, worst case scenario this is as good as Soto will ever be, and he will return to his modest career #'s and be a defensive backup catcher. Then the only sad thing about it would be that the Cubs wasted his offensive breakout year with 4 months of it in AAA when they had nothing but catcher issues in the big leagues all year.
  10. Mathematically, the Cubs have about as good of odds to host a first-round division series as they do to relinquish the lead they currently have in the division.
  11. Yeah, I'm failing to see how anything so far has gone any differently from what people were suspecting. Brewers went 3-4 on their road trip, Cubs had a 5-1 homestand. Maybe the Cubs were 1 game better than folks were expecting, but right now everything is playing out the way it has to for the Cubs to come out ahead. All they have to do now is win both series remaining, and they are in. Heck, they still have a remote chance of finishing with the best record in the league.
  12. I think it really explains a lot about why Cubs fans still hold him in such high regard. Anything that the've done good in the past decade has involved Wood. And both times it destroyed his arm. Sad, really. Nobody on the team deserves a WS ring as much as Wood for all he's sacrificed for the good of the team over the past 10 years.
  13. Technically, the Mets blew a 4 game lead in the wildcard to the Giants with a week left in 1998 (and the Cubs actually led the wildcard by 5 games with 8 to play). It just doesn't count because the Cubs did win the playoff game over the Giants.
  14. This is really the only thing that annoys me about the Brewers' fan perception: Facts: 2007 MLB Payrolls Cubs 2007 payroll: $99,937,000 Cubs 2006 payroll: $94,841,167 Increase in payroll: About 5 million Brewers 2007 payroll: $71,986,500 Brewers 2006 payroll: $56,790,000 Increase in payroll: About 15 million The Cubs are not spending like the Yankees. They were actually in the bottom half of the league in payroll increase in the past year. They did not increase payroll by 300 million in the offseason. Yes, they will spend about 300 million over the next 7 years on the free agents they acquired. EDIT: It appears that at its core level, the problem the Brewer fans have with the Cubs is the same problem that the White Sox fans have with the Cubs. Having to compete with the Cubs for fanbase, and being heavily outnumbered, even at home games.
  15. I'm not exactly sure how far any of those players are from arbitration, but until then, the basic gist is that the team can pay them whatever they want to pay them year-to-year. Of course, if the team pays the minimum for a player that is All-Star caliber, they aren't likely to keep that player any longer than is league-required.
  16. If it ends up being Cubs/D-backs, I definitely see the Brenly team doing the games, just because of Brenly's ties to both teams.
  17. Wood Ramirez Zambrano Marmol Murton
  18. Wow. Illinois looked...good. On both sides of the ball. Won a Big Ten opener for the first time in 14 years (in 2001, the dropped the opener and then ran the table). They actually have a decent shot at a bowl. Need to win 3 more among games against Ball State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Iowa, Penn State, Michigan, Ohio State, and Wisconsin.
  19. Before people say it's over, take a look at the lead the Cubs had on the Giants with 8 to play in 1998.
  20. Well, I think you would be a huge upgrade over Littlefield, and I don't know anything about you.
  21. They both gave up 7 runs in less than 3 innings. I think we can call it a wash. Big runs in the first inning usually mean the pitcher stays in for at least a couple. I think it is different. Game should be nowhere close to being tied right now. Yeah, but that's because the Cubs should have done better last inning with the bases loaded and no outs. They did score twice, that's about average for a bases-loaded, no out situations.
  22. I would never have confidence in Marquis, because he's inconsistent. However, he certainly has the ability to throw a gem, so it's not a complete lost cause. The important thing is not letting it get to the last game. Thing with Marquis is, it's easy to tell immediately whether he has it or not. Like today, even in the top of the first, it was obvious Marquis had BP stuff today, and Lou decided to wait until he surrendered a 3-run lead to switch him out. I have no problem with starting Marquis in a crucial game, but it's almost like there needs to be a backup pitcher ready in case Marquis just doesn't have it.
  23. Yeah, it's also funny to remember back then everyone was rooting for the Brewers against the Astros. It was tied going into Friday, and the Cubs game got rained out, so people were already assuming a split in the Saturday DH, so everyone was merely hoping the Brewers could take 1 from the Stros. They took the first 2, the Cubs swept the DH, and just like that the division race was over.
  24. I would really enjoy the NL playoffs if it were the Cubs, Pads, D-Backs and Phillies. I could root for any of those teams in the World Series.
