Pagan would be hard-pressed to perform worse than Jones did last night. At least Pagan is someone I wouldn't mind the Cubs using like they used Pie. Late inning defensive replacement (although he's not much better defensively than Jones), pinch runner, 25th man. And Pie can start every day and get 3-4 plate appearances a day.
The only argument against playing Pie is that he can't hit. However, Jones can't hit lefties. So, all things being equal offensively, I'd just as soon prefer the significant defensive upgrade.
8-13-1986 - First game I ever attended. Fantastic back and forth game. Also notable because of a scrawny rookie CF for the Pirates. http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1986/B08130CHN1986.htm 8-29-1989 - This was the magical 9-run, late-inning comeback against Houston, the kind of game where you just knew it was the Cubs' year. http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1989/B08290CHN1989.htm
Hard to blame the pitching for that one 2 runs in 7 innings for Lilly, 2 runs in 8 innings for the pen. Offense wasn't patient at all today, and that cost them baserunning opportunities. Issues were compounded by overaggressive managerial decisions, running into extra outs when they couldn't be afforded.
