Yeah, it seems like they're pretty content to start the season with what they have, which isn't a terrible strategy given how much young pitching costs in a trade and the fact that Hammel was good in the first half. Truly a "[expletive] pitchers" offseason by Theo if that's the case. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. The Cubs have all of the leverage in this situation -- if July rolls around and it's apparent that you need to make a move for another starter, you can absolutely do it with the pieces that you have. Arrieta-Lester-Lackey-Hammel-Hendricks is a pretty solid rotation. You'd love to have another frontline starter, but wait for the market to go down from the price that it's currently at.

That seems odd to me. You would be unhappy if the Cubs signed Heyward and then went into the season with basically the same line up as last year, minus Fowler and Castro and plus Heyward, Zobrist and Lackey? I suppose come playoff time it wouldn't make much of a difference and Hammel could do his typical "first half awesomeness" thing, but it just feels like keeping Hendricks/Hammel as your 4/5 is ignoring a major problem. If Hendricks and Hammel are your 4-5 for the first half of the season, I'm all for it. You could still acquire somebody at the deadline to bolster your rotation and your lineup would be even more formidable in 2016 than it was in 2015. If you slot Hammel and Hendricks down from where they were in the rotation last year, you'd see that their numbers would be pretty good compared to the rest of the fourth or fifth starters in baseball.

Not that I'm 100% behind Groce, but I can't help but wonder where we'd be right now with a healthy team all year. Not crazy to think we'd have one loss. I really hope this isn't the excuse all year, which in turn gives Groce a free pass for another year. No thanks.

Because he didn't actually grab the facemask. He hits it on the way to grabbing his shoulder. The rule is you have to grab it and then either hold on or twist. That didn't happen. Several years ago, even incidental contact with the facemask was a penalty. That isn't true in the NFL anymore. I'm not surprised they made the call because it looks like a face mask in live speed action. It's an understandable call to be missed but it was missed. Unbelievable that they can't go to the replay for penalties like that. I understand not allowing regular holding calls to get reviewed, but a call like that, which isn't a judgement call at all, should be eligible for review. Also, I liked the old incidental facemask 5 yard penalty. The distinction is key IMO, but whatever. Even if they did review that, I'm not really sure that would've been reversed. In real speed, that absolutely 100% looked like a face mask. On the replay, it still looks like the defender got a finger on the face mask, although obviously it wasn't anywhere close to what appeared to happen in live speed. As long as there's any contact to the head area of a QB, based on the NFL's rules, that's a penalty. They do need to make PI/face mask/unnecessary roughness penalties reviewable though.

yet the Lions are all lined up in the back of the end zone like he's gonna just heave it 80 yards There were inexplicably 2 lions on the sidelines at around the 20 yard line and Haloti Ngata on the field like, he could have been left completely unblocked and his slow ass wouldn't have affected the play in any way...oh, that Jim Caldwell He said after the game that he thought the final play was going to be a lateral play. lol.

i thought Rodgers looked OK but i'm guessing Davante Adams had money on the Lions; that might have been the most comprehensively terrible WR performance i can recall what was it, 64 yards on 18 targets and a flat-out drop of the 2-point conversion to force OT? edit: 79 yards on 21 targets; putrid. Adams was horrific. He's had a couple of games that jump out and make you think he's going to be dynamic, but then he's either completely MIA, or just bad like he was yesterday. He really needed to stop bitching about some of those no calls too. It probably wouldn't have mattered much, but that personal foul that he took which made a 4th and 5 (and a definite go for it situation) into a 4th and 20 had to have been one of the dumber penalties in recent memory. They're a mess right now. I don't know what McCarthy's waiting for as far as taking back the playcalling duties, but that needs to happen ASAP.

Denver's defense is definitely legit, but I have no idea why the Packers were working deep passing patterns so much. They really should've been looking at more WR screens, slants, and easy passing patterns against that defense. Jones has been obviously a big addition this year, but he gets shut down against good corners. Jordy was really missed last night and that'll continue to become more prevalent against defenses like Carolina, Minnesota, Arizona, etc. Packers schedule the second half of the season is pretty tough. All of the road games (minus Detroit, which is always a tough place to win at for the Packers) are against decent teams.

Was watching the Nets broadcast last night (because Eagle and Fratello are terrific) and they mentioned it was the first time that happened to the Nets since 2009.

Sucks when one of the really good guys is forced to retire in an industry like this. Should have happened to someone else. He's one of my favorite coaches ever. One of the nicest dudes you can meet too, and he was as genuine as they come. Hopefully his health improves.

The inconsistencies of the rules are what I don't get. I thought he didn't complete the full "process" of the catch because the ball was coming loose just as he got his second step down. They ruled it on the field as an interception, so my interpretation is that you needed indisputable evidence to overturn the call. The more replays that I saw, the more it appeared to me that the initial call was the correct one and that it should've been an INT. Then again, I don't understand what a catch is anymore. Admittedly, I thought that Calvin Johnson rule was a catch, Dez's was a catch, Devonta Freeman's reception last week was a catch, and I thought this was a pick, so what the hell do I know? At this point, I think every NFL officiating crew is guessing with the catch rules.
