  1. Pena's not worth the risk. Santana is worth all kinds of risk. He's still one of the most talented young pitchers around.
  2. I picked starting pitching. I don't think the Cubs necessarily need more power. Because the only real power options available are likely to be corner IF and OF, 3 of the 4 spots are filled. If you upgrade power from Floyd....sure, the offense is better, but is the team as a whole better going from Floyd to a power hitting OF or is it better served by getting Jacque out of there, whose OBP and SLG outside of this month has been abysmal? In a perfect world, the Cubs would be able to get a power hitting SS, CF, or C to complete the offense. That's probably not gonna happen. So, in order to bring in power, they will only marginally upgrade an already decent part of the team.
  3. Wow. Had to start 7 different starters this week, but I got six 20 point games.
  4. eh, he's not that's good. Career .770 OPS (103 OPS+), .790 last year (95+), .820 this year (114+). Gets on base less than 34% of the time. He kills LH pitching, but has just a .727 OPS vs. RHPs in over 1000 ABs. He's a platoon player, and at 29 in November, probably not getting much better.
  5. He would be a nice pickup....if all things were equal. But he leads his team in hitting, .002 behind in OBP, and leading SLG outside of Mark Reynolds 1/2 season worth of ABs. He's clearly the D'backs best player, having his best year and probably will be the best bat available at the deadline. The Backs are gonna want a ton for him. Add in he's a FA and seeking a Juan Pierre like deal (5yr/9M per), and will be 32 coming off his first above average season......not a good idea to sign him long-term, which is the only way a trade would be worthwhile.
  6. I'd love the Cubs to get another starter. Obviously, Marquis is gonna be in the rotation because of his contract, but if the Cubs can upgrade from Marshall (hard to upgrade what he has done, but I'm thinking about how he probably projects to wear down a little) and then trade Marshall in a package to upgrade the offense, then it's a no brainer.
  7. Cedeno has been pushed faster than almost any prospect the Cubs have had in recent years. He was in AA at the ripe age of 21 and AAA and the majors at 22-23. His "bunch of time"(600 ab's or so, basically 1 full ML season) was under a jackass of a manager who applauded free swinging, and not walking. It would be really foolish to form a definite opinion on Cedeno based on 600 ab's in the ML's at the age of 23. Cedeno wasn't just a "light-hitting" SS, though. He was a "light-hitting" SS, with great potential defensively and the projectability to hit 15 HRs a season. He was very raw and young for his league every year in the minors. I think his potential started to show in AA. He credited a lot to Sosa helping him when he was in Tennessee on a rehab assignment. 2nd half of the year in AA he was very good and that carried to AAA the next year. So, it wasn't a case of him just hitting journeymen AAA pitchers. He was solid in AA at 21.
  8. Byrnes is a decent player, nothing more. Would be expensive to obtain, and probably wouldn't be worth re-signing. I'd probably pass on him.
  9. As far as affordable LH bats off the bench go, can't beat Matt Stairs. I think it would take less to get him than it did to get Kendall.
  10. Check again. Four 20+ point starts and I'm up 50+. Of course, I'm down 3 or 4 starts to 1 the rest of the week. My offense has to come alive, and I've gotten nothing out of my relievers.
  11. Cubs won't win the division anyway. Wildcard is more likely. I like San Diego's ability to stay on top less than the Brewers, Dbacks will fade. Braves will be there, but with help, the Cubs are a better team.
  12. Should we be celebrating another trade/DFA of a player that's not even ML worthy......or should we be demoaning the fact that Hendry has had a more talented player being held back in the minors because he signed said player in the first place?
  13. QFT. And this is the first time I've ever done that. So, I really believe in this post.
  14. Yeah, not exactly a game Lou should write home about. And right after a game he did everything right (pitchout on squeeze, hit an run with Derrek Lee). I thought it was fitting that the guy who is supposed to be the Cubs answer to offensive problems at catcher,.......was pinch hit for in the 9th.
  15. I'll do it again. I sucked last year, though.
  16. Schuerholz is obviously #1. After that, I'm a big fan of Shapiro and Ryan. I think Beane is probably around 5 or 6. Not a big fan of Epstein. He's decent, but probably not in my top 10. 1. Schuerholz 2. Shapiro 3. Ryan 4. Dombroski 5. Beane 6. Beinfest 7. Stoneman 8. Melvin 9. Jocketty 10 Towers
  17. I agree with a lot of things said in this thread, but I disagree with a lot also. Most people are ruining the thread by generalizing and oversimplifying things. It's not Blevins himself who is the problem with this deal. It's the fact that the Cubs gave up any young pitching for a player who has performed, at best, equal to what the 5 other guys who have caught for the Cubs this year have produced. They have done so while adding salary, to what may be a tight budget as is. To me the bottom line is: Hoping 33-year old, Jason Kendall turns things around and puts up his career numbers aren't worth the $3-4M the Cubs are paying. He won't put the Cubs over the top, and there's just as good of a chance that one of the guys (in their mid-20s, who are all better defensively) will put up similar numbers. Kendall has caught nearly 10,000 innings. There's no reason to think he can come close to his career numbers.
  18. QB- Carson Palmer RB- Reggie Bush RB- Frank Gore
  19. I won last week? How did that happen? I'm sure Morneau getting 30 points one day helped a lot.
  20. I believe I invented the Renteria scenario. Before the season I wanted to deal Jones and Marshall for Renteria. But Jones can't hit his weight and Marshall has become somewhat of a necessity. At the time, the Braves were iffy in the OF (Langerhans turned out to suck, but Diaz and Harris have been great in LF out of nowhere), and had a hole at 5th starter. They still have that hole, and I don't really see them making a deal unless they can add a big time starter, who is in his pre-or early arbitration years. I do think the Braves would rather deal Renteria, because of his salary. They aren't gonna be taking on any salary, as has been the case in recent years. I don't see anyway for something to work out with the Cubs unless they Hill or Marshall and in Sean's case add in a pretty big time prospect.
  21. unexpectedly? I've been expecting him to spend most of the season on the DL since 2005. Fixed that for you.
  22. A married friend of mine (a guy) said that he thinks 2-4 times a week is actually better than every night, just because that way there's a little more effort out of both involved... I guess it's sort of the mentality where it's still regarded as a treat, whereas any sustained stretch of every night will make it turn into more of a chore. His words, not mine. I'm just throwing them out there. Quoted for truth. Oh, and for statistical purposes, married for 18 months, in the relationship for 6+ years. I kinda agree. Although, sometimes I want a stretch of about every night for 2 weeks straight.
  23. I want to thank you all for making me feel oh so excited about getting married. Though, I'm suspecting you guys are mostly right. We had a lot more sex when we didn't even live together. Now we let things like sleep and work get in the way.
  24. Nocioni's a restricted free agent and the Bulls are on record saying they will match if he signs an offer sheet from another team. Memphis wants Nocioni huh? That's excellent. Match the offer, then trade him in a package for Gasol. Don't see it happening unless the Bulls are willing to include Deng, and he's untouchable by all accounts. Bulls don't have a large, expiring contract to offer in return either. Don't think Gordon gets it done? Memphis does have plenty of SF talent in Mike Miller (18ppg) and Rudy Gay. Gay started at the 2 last year, but is best used at the 3. Memphis was very weak in the backcourt last year. I think Gordon and Conley would go a long way to making them a better team....even w/o Gasol.
