That hook and hold call in the Illinois game was baffling, and almost gave the game to Iowa. MAYBE there was a little bit of a hook by Wagler, but it looked like he was getting pushed down more than anything. Iowa's coach "appealed", and after a 4 minute review the refs decided it was a hook and hold flagrant on Wagler. Instead of Illinois getting 2 free throws, Iowa got 2 free throws instead and then got the ball back after.
No matter how many times I watch it, I still can't tell exactly what happened, but there is no possible way there was enough evidence there to make such a game-altering call. The rule is stupid to begin with. It was two guys battling for the ball. If you think the foul was on Wagler, fine, then make it a common foul, but games shouldn't be getting decided by a referee's interpretation of a guy getting his arm grabbed slightly. Let the players decide the game and stop with the nonsensical reviews and flagrant foul calls.
