  1. It's hard for me to imagine Payton being a huge financial savings over Mully. Maybe there is a bit there, but enough to really make a significant difference in the books? If that truly is the motiviation, it might show the station is in more trouble than we know of.
  2. He also looks like the definition of a maximum effort guy. He is pushing hard for every extra tenth of a mph he can get, and it has been working. I'm not confident in the results holding up long term, but for now he has been getting the job done.
  3. I guess it could be a schedule preference more than anything. This allows him to work mornings and likely attend his kids' sporting events, etc, so I completely get that.
  4. That's not just other cities. Even in Chicago, they are increasingly going to syndicated broadcasts including the gambling-sponsored ones. After an evening Cubs game, you get about 20-30 minutes of recap and then it cuts to a nationally syndicated show talking about preseason football. I have said it before, but at the bare minimum they could simply have a guy on the radio taking postgame calls from fans, but they don't even do that anymore. I assume that is because FanDuel or whatever other sports gambling outfit that sponsors the syndicated shows is paying them more for the time slot than the local advertisers. But who is even listening?
  5. According to the Sun-Times, it's going to be Payton replacing Mully, which explains his WGN departure a few weeks ago. But is the morning radio gig really a step up from lead sports anchor on WGN?
  6. Does anyone really WANT Milner to come back? I don't think he's better than another pitcher on the roster.
  7. What's the deal with Carson Kelly batting 9th lately? Has Counsell explained that at all?
  8. It's getting more difficult to imagine Happ taking anything more than a 1-year prove-it deal in the offseason.
  9. I get it. You don't want to let the runner advance to 2nd.
  10. The guy just gave up his first runs is several months. It sucks, but it happens.
  11. So if PCA wins the MVP, it's only because of "Ohtani fatigue.". Not the fact that PCA has had an objectively better season by WAR. If only there was some metric that could measure how many wins a player's defense is worth and compare that to the value of a pitcher...
  12. Oh shut the horsefeathers up Smoltz. You are clearly discounting PCA's defense.
  13. Cool. More stories about Smoltz robbing home runs in batting practice please.
  14. Something I've noticed a few times recently when PCA has made soft contact, he hasn't run at all. It looks odd, not something I'm used to seeing from him. It threw me off once or twice because I thought the ball was foul based on him not even leaving the batters box. I'm not saying it was going to make any difference for him to run on those particular plays. They have been as routine as routine gets. But I'm not used to seeing that out of PCA.
  15. The Cubs need Shaw back badly. Conforto in the lineup has run it's course.
  16. Webb didn't throw many pitches. Just get this one run in and then challenge the Mariners to score on Webb.
  17. Boog and JD were talking about this a few games ago and how they want to keep the system as is because they like the strategy element. I could not disagree more with that opinion. If there's a way to get ALL the calls right, let's do it, and not let games be decided by a hitter or catcher's decision or non-decision to challenge a pitch.
