It has nothing whatsoever to do with a sense of entitlement and more to do with the fact that ND would likely lose money going to that bowl game and has very little to gain from it. Yes, practice time, but if the new coach isn't ready/able to coach the bowl game, what good does practice time under a lame-duck coaching staff do? Not to mention the predictable media laugh-fest if ND lost to Central Michigan - which I'm certain they would do. yeah, notre dame's strapped for cash. probably can't afford a charter to detroit or wherever the hell that bowl is. Similar thing happened to Georgia Tech in 2001. Ironically, when George O'Leary left for ND for oh, 5 minutes. O'Leary left, Georgia Tech was left with a lame duck coaching staff basically knowing that whoever else was hired would bring in his team of guys. Georgia Tech went to the Seattle Bowl (now defunct) and beat then #11 Stanford 24-14. What that game did do was hold a lot of recruits and potential transfers from jumping ship. Oh, and the losing coach in that Seattle Bowl, was Ty Willingham, who took the ND job soon after the loss to Tech.
