  1. I'm not winning this argument, so I give up. You win.
  2. I don't see Walker in Atlanta. Didn't Atlanta nontender Marcus Giles at a price somewhat close to what Walker will make? The Braves have Pete Orr, Martin Prado and Willy Aybar to try out at 2b besides Johnson. Don't the Brewers already have a couple of other guys who can play 2nd? Counsell and Graffanino?
  3. That's why I usually just refer to him as Pudge.
  4. Whoops. I forgot to list Hill in my list. I'd add Gallagher and Veal to that list. By 2008, both should be close enough to consider a look.
  5. Pudge is working on age 36 and makes 10m a year. I'll take Barrett. Pudge had one of the best pitching staff's in baseball last year. It really isn't all about the catcher.
  6. I'd be fine if he made it to 2b, which he didn't at least once last year. I don't recall him not reaching second, but I've tried to block out memories of Cubs baseball from October 2003 to the present. It happened. But, then again, I fault Dusty for that. After the first one, I'd tell him exactly what I said. If you have no doubt it's leaving the park, pull up a lounge chair and and an icy cold one, but if it has a chance to stay in the park, you had better be at 2b unless we're playing in Boston.
  7. I'd be fine if he made it to 2b, which he didn't at least once last year.
  8. The problem is that Ramirez doesn't know when his home runs are going to go out or not-I have no problem if somebody stands there for an obvious home run, but if it's questionable, the player has to run in order to avoid what happened to Ramirez multiple times last year. Again though, if Ramirez is the worst hustler on the team, then the Cubs have a good hustling team, because his possible hustle issues are much smaller than several around the league. Agreed. Admire a 475 foot blast for as long as you like, because it's leaving the field of play no matter where you are playing. If you just hit a David Eckstein fly ball, you need to get your butt in gear, because it may not be clearing the fence. And because even David Eckstein can hit a home run, what have you really accomplished when you hit a ball 350 feet. It's certainly not awe inspiring where one should stand there and admire their fine work.
  9. You're also assuming Clement is worth a crap by then, which is doubtful. His contract is done after 2007 though. Well, he's supposed to be ready to start throwing sometime around midseason this year. And yeah, I was making that assumption as well. But, Boston should have first dibs on bringing him back on a fairly reduced contract, if they want him.
  10. The discussion was that Todd Walker's 2.5m salary in 2006 was very modest, and that he was underpaid. CCP then listed the average salaries of 2b's, SS and OF's to show how 2b is not as valuable as other positions. I then pointed out a list of all the minimum salary 2b's there were last year that must have been a huge drag on the overall average salary for 2b's. I'm assuming the numbers he used were for 2006, since I originally started the topic of discussing Walker's 2006 salary. Walker will be making nearly 4m in 2007, and that hasn't been a part of the discussion, just as Utley's 2007 salary should not.
  11. Is Clement under Boston's control in 2008? They sort of have an in house replacement if by chance Schilling goes elsewhere. This is assuming Schilling never gets back to being the ace he once was, of course.
  12. Do we know for a fact that Marquis can do a better job than any of the bullpen arms? The Cubs are going into the 2007 with a pretty strong bullpen. You should probably change your comment to "I'll believe this when Jason Marquis is sucking it up and moves to the most expensive bullpen catcher in MLB history."
  13. 500K is a lot more than league minimum? Chase Utley inf 7 years/$85M (2007-13) signed extension 1/07 $2M signing bonus 07:$4.5M, 08:$7.5M, 09:$11M, 10:$15M, 11:$15M, 12:$15M, 13:$15M I'm guessing CubColtPacer was using 2006 to come up with his average salary base. 500K is what Utley made last year. What he'll make for the next 15 years has no bearing on this discussion.
  14. I blame the manager for that. Dusty rewarded plays like that with continued playing time. Moises Alou was too lazy to reach down and pick up a baseball, instead electing to kick it into the ivy to give the appearance it was hidden and a ground rule double, which turned into an inside the park home run. Alou was rewarded by staying in the game and playing the next game as well. Dusty seemed to embrace that kind of sloppy play. Unless a rookie did it.
  15. Barrett can not play every game at catcher and that's the reasoning behind it. I'm for Barrett playing 3rd if and only if Ramirez is hurt and Barrett needs a day off from behind the plate and he's the best option. If the Cubs have a Macias type guy to play third I'd rather have Barrett there instead. Now, if the Cubs can put DeRosa at third and Theriot at 2nd and give Barrett the day off, that I'm for. I'd rather give DeRosa the nod at 3b and put Theriot at 2nd while giving Barrett a valuable day off to rest.
  16. And what was the average salary for 2b's when you exclude the guys making league minimum, like Josh Barfield, Richie Weeks, Dan Uggla, Robinson Cano, Jorge Cantu, Chase Utley, Jose Lopez, Brandon Phillips, Jose Castillo and Aaron Hill. You have to admit that this is a pretty extensive list of minimum payroll talent. 1/3 of the major league teams worth.
  17. I don't understand the value of that stat. If Blanco catches for worse pitchers he's the worst catcher? If they are catching different people, it is difficult to get a measure of the value of that stat. Being that they are on the same roster, both caught a decent percentage of the same starters, therefore I think the stat has some merit.
  18. Possibly, but it sounds like Schilling wants to leave-I think Boston would have to knock his socks off with an offer after the season in order to stay: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/spring2007/news/story?id=2774965 I don't see the Cubs being in a position to knock Schilling's socks off. Boston is pretty famous for knocking people's socks off. Assuming Zambrano gets his long term deal, that pretty much puts Zambrano, Lilly, Marquis, Prior in the rotation with guys like Guzman, Gallagher, Veal, Samardzija, Pawelek, Marshall and few choice others vying for the last spot. The Cubs will already be very close to 100m in committed dollars to only about 12 roster spots (Soriano, Lee, Ramirez, Zambrano, Lilly, DeRosa, Marquis, Dempster, Howry, Eyre, Jones and Blanco). That still leaves Wood, Prior, Barrett and Izturis as players that will expect raises from their 2007 salary if they are kept around.
  19. CERA in 2006: White: 4.98 Barrett: 4.57 The Cubs won/loss percentage is worse than their season total for games Hank White caught.
  20. All indications point to Boston resigning him if he's good this year.
  21. Agreed. He did do that. Just pointing out how underpaid he was for his production. Neifi Perez at 2.5m, Walker at 2.5m and Pierre at 5.5m. Who provides the most production per dollar of that group? Walker in a landslide.
  22. Good point. I'm definitely hoping for that. If Jones hits against LHP, we'll have 2 Cesar Izturis' in the line up. If Blanco is playing that game, we might as well forfeit.
  23. I don't recall the timeline of the Barfield/Kouzmanoff trade, but Walker was in line for a starting gig in 2007. It's quite possible that the Padres would have picked up another 2b if Giles wasn't nontendered, but now they have a very expensive back up infielder. Very expensive at least in the eyes of the Padres front office. Walker has been ridiculously underpaid. In his 3 seasons in Chicago, he never made more than 2.5m to be the everyday, top of the order hitting 2b. Neifi Perez made 2.5m last year.
  24. Her eyes are kinda cute. But, other than that........ :D
