  1. That's a pretty good team as long as you don't get bitten by the injury bug.
  2. My grandmother's back yard butted up against the Phillies practice facility in Clearwater. I lived there for a couple years back in 1983-84. That was pretty cool watching all the guys out there practicing. Dunedin butts up to Clearwater, but I thought that was one of their minor league teams locations. Is that where they play their spring training games too? The causeways from Clearwater to Tampa and St. Petersburg to Tampa are pretty impressive drives.
  3. Good for Todd. Though that might actually be bad for Todd in the big picture. Todd just became harder to deal in a trade, and may be the victim of hard feelings in the front office in San Diego. It's too bad he couldn't land a starting gig somewhere. Interestingly enough, he won his arbitration case, yet still doesn't make as much money as Cesar Izturis.
  4. Actually, we probably would be a lot better with Eckstein. only because our current SS options suck Yeah, that was a pretty bad example. I'd take Eckstein over Izturis everyday of the week and twice on double header day.
  5. Winning really is the cure all for a lot of things. For example, a team that is going nowhere with a 60-90 record makes it hard for a player to go out there and work his butt off. A team that is 90-60 is a fun team to play on, and you want to hustle out a grounder, because you have a totally positive attitude about the team you are playing on. You're playing for something, and as much as we want to think everyone should work hard regardless of the score or the team record, I think winning tends to bring more out in a player.
  6. Hustle is important to me. But, it's not the be all end all. It pisses me off when I see someone loafing down the first base line. The people sitting in the stands deserve more than that for their top dollar ticket. But, I think a big reason Aramis loafed the past few years (occasionally) is because he was nursing along an injury AND Dusty was not exactly a crack the whip manager. Dusty's managing style made it okay to loaf and have zero consequences. At least that's my view, anyway. And for every time Aramis loafed to 1b on a ground ball, he hustled on other plays. Is he really just lazy? His bat hasn't gotten lazy. His defense is much improved since his first season manning 3b for the Cubs. I'll take the improved defense and consistent production from his bat over being out at 1st base by 3 or 4 steps instead of 2 every time. Face it. The guy is not a speed demon. He is not going to win any foot races to first base. A time may come where the SS bobbles the ball on a play that Aramis might have had a chance to beat out if he was running full speed, and I'll trust Lou to give Aramis a lecture when it happens.
  7. I think you're setting some awfully lofty goals for that pitching staff. Harang, Snell and Bedard all pitch for teams that will be bottom feeder teams, so the wins won't be there. I'm not so sure the ERA will be there for them either, but that's just my opinion. Glavine isn't getting any younger. Mussina, Verlander and Santana are good picks, but I have some reservations about Lilly's fly ball tendencies as well. Offensively, you're strong everywhere except in the outfield.
  8. Check the FAQ forum for other fan forums. I'm going to lock this one up.
  9. I think they tried to trade him all offseason with little to no luck. He makes too much money for his production, and the Brewers would have to pick up a significant portion of that salary to move him. The Padres appeared to have some interest, but that was before the gave Marcus Giles a contract, and it might have even been before they signed Jose Cruz Jr. The Padres are looking at Termell Sledge and Cruz in LF. Honestly, I can't think of any teams that want or need an injury-riddled, high priced, aging ballplayer like Jenkins, while promising him a bunch of playing time.
  10. Boy, I hate being the bearer of such bad news. It makes everyone so grumpy. When Prior proves healthy and Hill averages 3 K's an inning in ST, we all know Marquis will actually be the #5, and Lou will eventually change his mind about skipping the 5th starter on off days. Of course, it might be more favorable to not skip the 5th starter on off days, and instead toss one of Miller or Guzman out there to pitch in Marquis place.
  11. We will definitely need to sticky a Dusty Baker thread for all the fun stuff he will undoubtedly spew forth on Baseball Tonight. Surely, one of us will be watching him at one point or another each day.
  12. After hearing what Leyland had to say about Neifi, I doubt he gets many opportunities to play the field for a chance at web gems.
  13. Did I say he doesn't deserve any credit? No. I didn't. I said he gets TOO much credit for guys that were practically handed to him for next to nothing. Salary dumps are on teams all over MLB. Luckily, two of the better one's are on the Cubs.
  14. Another in a long list of ex-Cubs who can't land a gig in MLB after their stint with the Cubs.
  15. He's done alright with landing A-Ram and D-Lee for a pile of junk. Sure, he's had his share of bad moves as well, but he has secured four players who are likely all-stars this year (D-Lee, A-Ram, Soriano and Barrett. He gets way too much credit for Aramis and Lee. Both were salary dumps. Luckily, Hendry had the necessary parts and budget to fit both guys in. No one wanted Derrek Lee the year before Hendry traded for him. Baltimore was the most interested, but Florida wouldn't pick up part of the salary, and a deal never happened. Aramis was about to get expensive for Pittsburgh, and they were dumping anyone making any decent money that year. These were not big coos on Hendry's part. I'm happy the Cubs were the team that landed these two players, and I'm even more thrilled that it cost very little in talent to get them, but those guys would have been traded to someone regardless.
  16. Humor me. That's what that group will do.
  17. Z IMO still has to prove that he's one of the top 5 pitchers in the game before I pay him like one. We all know what happens when he lets his emotions get the better of him. We don't know what the market is for the top 5 pitchers in the game. None of them were free agents this offseason. Zito surely isn't one of them. And if Zito will make 18m, then Zambrano is worth at least that. Zito's ERA+ the last three years is 105, 116 and 116 Zambrano's ERA+ the last three years is 165, 131 and 136
  18. And it's not just Zambrano and Lilly. Maddux was making 9m to be a 4th starter. Wood made 12m last year.
  19. The arbiter has to know how the market exploded this offseason. I think Carlos has a very good chance of winning his case. I hope he does.
  20. Bruce, do you think this is going to have a big negative effect on getting a long-term deal done? Jim is going to have to say alot of negative things to Zambranos face in the process, and with a emotional guy like Carlos, it looks like getting a long term deal will be very difficult. What kind of negative things can be said of Carlos? The reason Carlos isn't already at least a two time 20 game winner is because of the crappy offenses Hendry put together. Hendry and Baker have abused Carlos to the point his arm is about to fall off. Zambrano might have gone high with his asking price, but the Cubs lowballed him too. Zambrano is more than a million dollars better than Ted Lilly.
  21. How ironic. 7m a year for the next 3 years for a pitcher with an over 6.00 ERA is not considered too much, but 13.5/13.75m for a GOOD pitcher, a true #1 starter is too high. Good luck getting Zito money from Hendry, Carlos. He seems to think 15m is too high, so there isn't any possible way he gives out 18m for the same guy. At least Hendry pretended like he wanted to get a deal done. Now I'm pissed again.
  22. Marquis is getting $7 million per. Can't skip him. Teams never skip the #3 starter anyway.
  23. Haha! I miss Felix. Well, that might be stretching things a bit. Well, that might be stretching things a lot, actually. He was alright, I guess. Hmm, that's not quite accurate, either. Well, I never really liked Heredia. I take that back. I despised Heredia with every fiber of my being.
  24. I think the first assumption is incorrect. I think Soriano will be in CF, which ends any need for a RH platoon in CF. Jones/DeRosa in RF and Murton/Floyd in LF is awesome.
  25. Agreed. I'm really looking forward to seeing Pierre back in Colorado, where guys tag up and take 2 bases on him on long fly balls.
