  1. Wait. Jason Marquis doesn't refer to himself in the third person? What a wuss.
  2. This is very not necessary. Please stop.
  3. Soriano's only real weakness offensively is the inability to draw a satisfactory amount of walks. He was top 20 in doubles, top 5 in home runs, top 15 in SLG, top 30 in OPS and top 10 in stolen bases. If he drew as many walks as some of the better OBP guys in the league, he'd be one of the best players in the league. Vlady had about the same amount of PA's as Soriano last year, and the only thing giving Vlady a better OPS is AVG. I'm looking forward to seeing how well Soriano can do in a much more hitter friendly division, with better bats hitting behind him. Even if his contract is ridiculous.
  4. The team is better with him than without him. While I would have rather had Miguel Tejada or Carlos Beltran or Vladmir Guerrero, those options aren't available anymore. Hendry dropped the ball on all 3. Without Soriano, this team is not very good. With him, they have a shot at the division, and beyond.
  5. He'd be at 10 years at that point, so he'd already have a no trade provision.
  6. Now that I think about it, it's probably Don Francisco's Vanilla Nut Coffee that makes me hyper and overreact to stuff. :D
  7. Don Francisco's Vanilla Nut Coffee. That stuff will fix you right up in the morning. I'd never leave the house without it. I do overreact on some things. Last minute deadline deals are one of them. I guess it's because I don't understand why it has to come down to the last minute. I know Hendry isn't a mindreader, and he shouldn't have been able to guess that the market would have exploded like it did, but he's had all that money burning a hole in his pocket since the end of the offseason, and I don't understand why Zambrano isn't locked up already. To me, that took precedence over signing DeRosa, Floyd, Marquis and even Lilly. I did the same thing in the Aramis thread. I was one of those people who overreacted. But, I would have been livid if Hendry didn't work a deal with him.
  8. Doesn't sound like he projects to stay at C.
  9. New Rule! Mark Prior is NOT allowed in the hot tub.
  10. By landing on your pitching arm, which contorts violently into the rib cage. 4-6 days recovery time for the bruised ribs, and a year and a half for the separated shoulder. :D
  11. Not necessarily. But, that's probably what will end up happening in this case. I'm just not sure how much they really want to backload another contract. I wonder if a signing bonus could help smooth things a bit?
  12. Admittedly, I've been one of the skeptics, mainly because I don't understand why he hasn't already been signed to a long term deal. This is great news if it happens.
  13. I'll have to disagree with you on this. How many people are members of the 40/40/40 club? If the guy walked a bit more, he'd be one of the premier players in the league. I'll take 89 XBH's from a CFer all day long. Are there any OF's that hit that many XBH's last year? Grady Sizemore is the only one I can find. That's pretty good company. It was ridiculous money to pay for anyone. But, no way does it classify as one of the worst signings.
  14. Soriano got a vote as worst free agent signing? Why is the Eckstein/Sosa reference in there? Sosa was not a Cub in 2005.
  15. Will Carroll's system probably has rated Z as a high injury risk for the past three years. This is true. It's too bad the Cubs couldn't have attempted to lighten up Carlos' usage to get him off that list last year. I suppose the same could be said about 2005 when Dusty did everything in his power to try to salvage a .500 season.
  16. Newbie! I've been watching since 1969. :D Old fart. I was 5 in 1969. And I'm quite thankful I never endured the 1969 season. Just reading about it is unbelievable.
  17. I don't think they really have all that much choice in games Floyd is playing. Neither Jones or Floyd should bat ahead of Lee and Aramis. Jones has already basically been promised to hit 5th. Are you going to bat Floyd 7th? I suppose they could, but it definitely wouldn't be a good idea to have Blanco hitting ahead of Floyd. When Barrett plays, it's possible that he'll bat ahead of Floyd. But, I do think they'll go back to back a lot.
  18. Sorry to do this to you, but.... You're talking to me like I was just born yesterday. I've been watching baseball regularly since 1971. This was before free agency became what it is. I didn't like free agency then, and I still don't like it now. But, I really don't need you talking down to me. You have a difference of opinion? Fine. I'm cool with that. Disagree if you want. But please refrain from the "holier than thou" routine. It adds nothing to the debate. And actually, if you stayed away from the Aramis thread because of the same reactions you're seeing here, why are you even bothering with this thread?
  19. We Cub fans have been tortured enough over the years. We really don't need midnight deadline deals added to the mix. If there is hope to get him signed, just get it done. Let's hear in the paper tomorrow that a long term deal is being hammered out instead of ultimatums threatening to leave at season's end if a contract isn't done before the season starts. If you were able to feel uber confident that Aramis would be signed, you have more willpower than most. I'm thinking they decided midnight in Hawaii was the deadline, because it went well past the deadline with no word on whether he was signed or not. And I can't give the highest marks to Hendry's storied career as a Cub GM, so pardon my skepticism on re-signing Zambrano.
  20. I'm definitely interested in Lopez. Not sure how I feel about the pitcher, but I don't think Ryu was going to be anything more than a bullpen arm this year in Iowa. And if the Cubs needed 40 man roster space, trading Ryu made sense.
  21. Understandable and reasonable. I might be jumping the gun on how much of an impact this trade will have in future years. Probably nothing like Anderson for Bagwell. But, I like Lopez and Kearns a lot. I probably would have given up more for Lopez by himself than Washington gave up for Lopez, Kearns AND Wagner. What would that be? Izturis, Wuertz, Eyre and some unheard of farm hand? 8 months later, at least 2 of those guys aren't even with Cincinnati anymore. Just a horrible trade.
  22. I believe I said ONE of the worst trades ever. That does not quantify it as the worst trade ever. Why so nitpicky tonight?
  23. Have you checked out the payroll thread in Transactions. That thread has the Cubs capped out at 115m already, and a ton of money already allocated to just a small handful of players in 2008 and 2009. Now Z is tossing out ultimatums. I don't see anything unreasonable about worrying that the Cubs won't have what's needed to resign Zambrano. There's injury concern and Hendry has been known not to be a big fan of giving a pitcher a long term contract like Zambrano wants. And, 18m a year for a guy who will pitch 33-35 games a year is a lot of money.
  24. What exactly is the hold up, then?
