  1. I'd forgotten that was the year you were in the league. She's not in the league anymore; she dropped out a couple of years ago. Your buddies, Greg (aka Mini) and HenDog are still in, though. :D (HenDog, however, has grown up a lot the last couple of years.) Happy to hear that. I think that was my first year playing Yahoo leagues. Wasn't that a Cubs.com fantasy league? 2003?
  2. Lofton is now with his 11th different major league team. What's the record for position players?
  3. To be fair, this is probably the earliest he arrived at camp in a decade or more. I don't doubt his desire to get those 12 homers and then some. I think the whole key to his return is whether or not he's lost any bat speed, and whether or not he can ever lay off the pitch down and away. I don't know if someone can be gone for a year after a very down season and regain former abilities. It'll be interesting. Hasn't Ruben Sierra done it? Juan Gonzalez keeps trying, but not having much luck. Richard Hidalgo missed last year and was pretty crappy in 2005. Julio Franco?
  4. They traded Alberto Callaspo. They have Erick Aybar. But, he's more of a speedster, hit for average SS. As far as glovework is concerned, Aybar may be a better defender, but the offense Wood provides is not of this world. I suppose if I had to make comparisons, Aybar compares somewhat to Brandon Phillips, and Brandon Wood compares to A-Rod. Meanwhile, both are blocked by a SS (Orlando Cabrera) that closely resembles Royce Clayton. Go figure.
  5. And I've spoken on this topic until I'm blue in the face. It's a new season and I have a lot to be excited about in 2007, so I really don't want to dwell on the '06 season. I just wanted more for Maddux. And I think Hendry could have gotten more than a high priced, no-hit, oft-injured utility player.
  6. I don't agree that Nomar would have replaced Jones. The Cubs signed Cliff Floyd this year and they have Murton and Jones. Nomar, Murt and Jones could have split time in the outfield and when Cedeno started struggling, I wouldn't have hesitated to put Nomar out there at SS. Of course, Lee got hurt pretty early in the season, which would have locked down a guaranteed job at 1b for the duration of Lee's injury. Nomar provided depth to the team. No, we didn't know Lee would get hurt. But, we did see Aramis nursing an injury the two previous years, which gave Nomar an opportunity to play some 3b as well. By the trade deadline, if Nomar really didn't have a place on this team, he could have easily been traded to a team in need. More than anything, he provided insurance (ie, depth) to a team that ended up really struggling last year because they didn't have any.
  7. what is IIRC If I recall correctly, it stands for if I recall correctly. :D
  8. Have you seen the programming on the NFL Network? Other than one game a week for 3 hours for 17 weeks, it's a bunch of garbage. The ratings have to be in the toilet. What could possibly be interesting on a 24 hour baseball network? Anybody ever watch ESPN sportscenter two or three times in a row? Boring. Same show repeated. It gets boring. And they cover ALL sports. NFL has cheerleaders, so the constant barrage of cheerleader shows on that network gets boring. Baseball doesn't have cheerleaders. Can an MLB Network be trusted to give you anything worth listening to? What you'll get is a bunch of retired old school baseball players who don't know a thing about being a broadcaster (Joe Morgan, Dusty Baker, Harold Reynolds, John Kruk, etc. ad nauseum. And a previous poster was 100% on the money. If you need baseball news that badly (24/7), that's what the internet is for.
  9. The Nats will be just fine. They have Christian Guzman manning SS. A guy with a glove like that will save the pitching staff all kinds of runs.
  10. Which makes it harder to accept that at best he will be platooning with Cliff Floyd this upcoming season. "At best"? What are you talking about? Floyd's going to get his chances to play a lot. The lack of lefty bats in the line up is the main reason why. You and I may agree that a lefty bat in the line up isn't really all that necessary if the righty bats are just as good or better than the lefty bats. But, there is an old school line of thinking by the managers that you have to have lefty bats in the line up. I'll be happy if Murton gets 500 at bats.
  11. What's even worse was that she left him in her starting line up all year.
  12. Just because someone is offering you crap in return for a dependable arm, doesn't mean you have to accept the offer. An overpaid, arthritic, part time, utility infielder is a crap player and nowhere near the value of a pitching arm for a team attempting to make the playoffs. Neifi Perez at 2.5m and Glendon Rusch at 2.5m or Nomar at 5m. I'll take Nomar every time. It would have prevented Glendon from ever stepping on the mound, and it would have prevented Neifi from getting more at bats at the top of the order. And honestly, can we really complain about Nomar's sidearm throwing angle after watching Juan Pierre's girly arm and Jacque Jones' pathetic release point in two of the three outfield spots last year? Probably wouldn't have mattered whether we had Nomar last year or not. The team was still going to be lousy with or without him, and I have zero faith Hendry could have gotten anymore out of Nomar at the trade deadline than Maicer Izturis, Cesar's brother.
  13. And finally, if it really didn't work out with Nomar, he would have been a nice trade commodity at the trade deadline last year. He probably would have requested to be traded to a west coast team, but there were plenty of those making moves last year.
  14. Jacque Jones at 5m in 2006: .285 .334 .499 OPS+: 107 Garciaparra at 5m in 2006: .303 .367 .505 OPS+: 120 And it didn't have to be either or. They could have had both of those guys AND Murton. They could have signed Lofton for cheaper than Pierre cost, and they would still have Nolasco.
  15. He wouldn't have had to play OF the whole season. He could have played 1b while Lee was down with a broken wrist. Nomar was giving the Cubs a discount to stay in Chicago. He felt he owed it to the fans of Chicago. Hendry was so entrenched in his plan to get Furcal here, and he was so convinced he would get him, he basically kicked Nomar to the curb. Hendry had no back up plan, which is basically what Nomar was. An insurance policy. I could have dealt with Nomar playing some SS last year besides playing some outfield or filling in for an injured player like Lee. 5m for a player of Nomar's abilities gives the team depth and strength. You find a way to get at bats for a guy like Nomar.
  16. I know you weren't honestly comparing the talents of Carlos Delgado with Jason Marquis. Florida is well versed at spinning off talented players for prospects. The Cubs are not, even though they SHOULD be, considering the amount of times they finished in the bottom half of their division. I would have taken George Kottaras off of the Padres hands for Maddux. Ethier, Kemp, Loney, Guzman, Delwyn Young, Andy LaRoche, Scott Elbert, etc..... The Dodgers played hardball with Hendry one too many times, and Hendry let Colletti walk all over him again on the Maddux deal. Simply amazing. Let us count the ways: 1) Outbid Hendry on Furcal, the only player Hendry wanted that offseason. 2) Signed Nomar, who Hendry had basically kicked to the curb. Nomar went on to have a stud-like year. 3) Cubs need for an outfielder like Milton Bradley had Dusty flying out to LA to meet with Bradley personally. Colletti traded him to Oakland instead. 4) Maddux for Izturis. 5) Signed Kenny Lofton, who would have been better than Pierre at nearly half the price.
  17. To be fair to Dusty, if everything you touched turned to crap, wouldn't you hide from the media, too? :D
  18. Awesome news.
  19. I will add that I am really pleased with Lou thus far. He's really saying all the right things.
  20. But, that's okay. Because most of those righty hitters pack a wallop.
  21. Now if we can just get his son to add Matt Murton and Ryan Theriot to his fantasy team........
  22. They do and they will, if they can't trade him. I'll bet he doesn't see opening day on the Padres roster. $4 mil to sit on the bench, I doubt it. I think the Padres will keep him, but only as insurance at 3b if Kouzmanoff doesn't work out.
  23. It was probably the 3rd out. :D
  24. Lou was 3rd or 4th down my list of candidates (Bochy being #1 on my list), but I don't mind being wrong sometimes. Of course, we do still need to play some baseball before we sit down for a huge helping of crow.
