  1. Hopefully, the lineup (even sans Milton for short-to-moderate stretches at a time) can carry us to the playoffs, and THEN MB won't need to miss a game. With any luck, he's here for October... And substitute Harden for Bradley and lineup for Rotation, and it's also true.
  2. That's an important question, but I think David already hit on the even more basic question. If WGN-HD isn't in your HD tier, it sounds like the WGN you're watching is just the regular SD broadcast. The fact that it says "In Hi-def where available" unfortunately sounds like it doesn't apply in your case -- it's probably referring to those areas where the separate WGN-HD channel is available.
  3. For whatever reason, I'll remember him for a game that isn't even in the record books. It was a Cubs-Cardinals game in May of 2003. The wind was howling out, and the score was 12-9 Cardinals after 4 innings when it got rained out. Clement was the starter that day. It got rescheduled for September and made that 4 game series into that memorable 5-game series in which we put the Cards away for good. same here. And if I recall -- trying to do it from memory -- one of our light hitters hit one of the many HRs that day, and I remember thinking how unfortunate it is for him that it doesn't matter. (I want to say it was Troy O'Leary)
  4. 500 Home Runs is officially not as big of a deal anymore :) Sheffield: 499 hrs . . . released before ST ends
  5. "Off of the Cubs" does imply that the player must be current. You can't delete something from a paper on MS Word that's not there anymore, for example. But I support the sentiment.
  6. I didn't even know you dabbled in measly suspicions . . . ;)
  7. Thats different Miles is a career journeyman type of player. Maybe he'll give us an empty batting average as they say, but thats about it. As for Hoff, I think more and more people are beginning to accept that hes more than just a fluke. Hes had nice minor league numbers the past few years. He dominated last spring training. Hes dominating this spring training. He dominated the PCL last year, and he did pretty well for himself in his time in the bigs. Im not saying that hes Albert Pujols, but I am saying that he will be a solid major league ball player, probably a .270 AVG with a .800+ OPS and 20+ HRs if he ever gets the chance to be a full time player. I just gave his numbers in the majors another look, and they really are nice. .342/.400/.534 OPS+ 137, with a couple HRs, and 8 2bs in 72 ABs
  8. Derrek Lee to the bench please It's spring training. I love the insider information you provide us!!!! ;) That's why I'm here. Hoffpauir certainly has earned a spot on the team, and he has one. Lee with be there the vast majority of the time, but Hoffpauir will get a decent amount of playing time. That's good to hear. How much time do you think he'll see backing up corner outfield spots?

  10. Group A: Ryan Howard Group B: Prince Fielder, Mark Teixeria Group C: Josh Hamilton, Evan Longoria, Aramis Ramirez Group D: Derrek Lee, Chipper Jones, Geovany Soto, David Ortiz, Joey Votto WILD CARD: PM'ing right now . . .
  11. Welcome to the forum -- good first post. Unfortunately, as many on here will tell you, Fox's inability to play any position well enough for the majors makes it really hard to find a spot for him on a big league team, even the bench.
  12. why? Because he gets on base 50 pts higher & scores more runs than Soriano? The main measure of a leadoff hitter is runs scored. With 76 last year, he was near the bottom in MLB in runs scored for leadoff hitters. Why? Because he does not have a leadoff mentality at the plate. He has more of an rbi producing mentality. IMB's point is more important, but also, saying that someone's mentality for run scoring is not good enough because it's an "rbi producing" mentality just sounds funny ;)
  13. Did they just show Kosuke as the "2008 NL rookie of the year" in the Japan vs Cuba game?
  14. He seems to have an opinion about everything. And he has no problem sharing that opinion with anyone that will listen. And even people who won't listen. If he would just keep quiet and pitch, I think he'd be a lot more popular. Exactly what I thought someone would respond with. But what does it all even mean, anyway? Who isn't opinionated? His wealth of opinions, if anything, signals a broad knowledge -- something not terribly common in the pro sports world. The fact that he shares it "with anyone who will listen" is a bad thing? They will listen, so, what's the problem? He's either blogging (which millions of people do, so why not him), or he's being hounded for his opinions by the media (and why not answer them?). What does he do wrong? He's outspoken, sure, but I don't understand how it leads to "animosity."
  15. can we submit our own lineups!?!?! ;)
  16. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/1436426,CST-SPT-cubnt18.article Good to hear. Although it's sad that she has lost some vision, it's good news. strange (and a little frightening) that they have a mystery on the hands again. But it surely is better than the previous diagnosis. That's good to hear.

  18. yep. not often you get something like this: a virtual assurance that it will be a fair trade, to some degree. Doesn't do anything for the frustration that this is what has become of RICH HILL in such a short time.

  20. hmmm.... the padres, huh? Anyone on the Padres that we might like? ;)
  21. I believe so, but I'm always surprised by things that many people say (ahem, Kevin Towers)... so I'm not really confident on what the rules are.
  22. Because the Padres have even worse constraints than fan pressure. They have an owner mandate to lower payroll to a point that demands Peavy be dealt, and Peavy and his agent have essentially made the Cubs his only possible destination. Ben Sheets is not a great alternative to Jake Peavy. Comparing Peavy to Sheets is a no-brainer, but comparing Peavy to Sheets, Vitters, Hart, Marshall, and an extra $30-40 million over the next few years isn't quite as obvious. Not to mention that agreeing to a deal with Ben Sheets in this economy and this stage of the offseason wouldn't likely be terribly difficult, versus not even knowing if Towers will accept a trade of those players AND that our new owner will even agree to pay for it AND the wildcard all along, whether the padres owner will even require that Peavy needs to go... I want Peavy pretty bad -- and I won't even try and justify with dollar figures and stats -- the fan in my really wants to absorb an Ace into my team's staff. He alone would make next season fun. But all that aside, I can definitely get on board the Sheets logic. (and, hey, I guess he's an ace, too ;))
  23. but why would a soulless corporation want to spend money on a huge payroll? Because winning and revenue are correlated. If you can bring it $200 million by spending $120, that's better than bringing in $100 million by spending $40. Which is exactly what the Tribune did. I guess so. I've just always had it in my mind that there are rich owners out there that refuse to spend money because they don't care about the team. But yeah, it probably is correlated, just not the way I've always pictured it... And, is that what the Tribune did, save for the last 5-8 years? Credit where credit's due there, but prior to that period, what was their financial strategy with the team? (seriously asking; I wasn't a fan before 2000ish)
  24. but why would a soulless corporation want to spend money on a huge payroll?
