  1. Bad voting is bad voting. Granted, it's always good when they ultimately choose the "right" winner. Blind squirrel finding acorn? This isn't college football or college basketball voting. All that matters in MVP voting is who finishes first. I'm not disputing that it doesn't "matter." All I'm saying is that when one is making the case the BBWA's voting record is not very good, that year is a prime example. The bad voting doesn't "matter" in the end, since they picked a good MVP, but to ignore the results as a whole entity would do a disservice to criticizing the voting record.
  2. Does it really matter who finishes 2nd through 9th? Nobody remembers that anyway. The writers made a good choice that year and that's all that matters. Bad voting is bad voting. Granted, it's always good when they ultimately choose the "right" winner. Blind squirrel finding acorn?
  3. I'm on mlb.tv at it's highest quality level (i.e. biggest buffer time, too) nsbb told me about DeRo way before I saw it at least it was good news :D
  4. it's catchable only after a sprint and a full-extension dive . . . lets not mislay any blame here. If he wasn't so slow he catches it standing up. if that's even the case, he's blamed for being 37?

  6. Good call. It's also why I think the Cubs easily got the better deal in Harden than the Brewers with CC. I don't see CC in milwaukee next year...
  7. I'm going to assume this is the part you wrote and mixed into the othe quote. A) Theriot is tied for 5th on the team in games played. B) Who effing cares about how his average ranks in the NL? It's meaningless. It has no baring on who should be the Cubs MVP. Theriot has been a nice role player this year. Nothing more, nothing less. Your second critique seems to be grasping at straws... It's meaningless? Surely you can infer that someone who is sixth in the NL in BA also compares well to his teammates. No bearing on the cubs MVP? You mean batting average has no bearing?
  8. While I wouldn't say Theriot is much of a candidate or that Edmonds/Johnson as a single entity can be, or that Soto is the number one offensive player on the team, I think they are a special kind of MVP. Not the Most Valuable Players, but integral reasons we're succeeding. When you think about the expectations (and the past players we've thrown out at these positions), these guys are all the reason why we don't have a weak spot in the lineup (relatively speaking). None of them should win an award for #1 anything on this team. But what if we had to keep throwing Pie's struggling line out there in CF all year, in addition to a Ryan Theriot that actually did break down into a months-long slump (like last year), in addition to a Barrett/Hill/Bowen/Kendall/Blanco year-long platoon? Now I understand you can't credit them for being better than plan B -- they can't control what plan B is. But they're all playing quite well and are all great examples of immense improvement on this team, compared to just one year ago. And for that, they're all valuable. And no matter how this season ends, they're all reasons we are where we are -- Best team in the national league (at least :)) But, oh yeah, Dempster/Zambrano/Ramirez/Soriano . . . they're your "MVPs". :)
  9. 1. Zambrano 2. Dempster 3. Soriano 4. Ramirez 5. Soto Honorable Mention: Rich Harden. Hasn't played for us much yet, of course. But if he continues to pitch near this level of quality upto and through October, he was an amazing pick up who really met (at least met) expectations.
  10. Since it's been used in some hypothetical, I looked it up. This year, Dunn has 5 sacrifice flies. Compared to the cubs, this would rank as second (7, 5, 5, 5, 4, 4, 4, 3, 1, 1). Our team leader in Ks, Geo Soto, also has five SFs. HOWEVER, Dunn has already set a career high for SFs in a season, never before topping 4. :) edit: for further information, he currently has 4 GIDPs. Compared to the cubs, this would rank as tied for seventh (22, 14, 11, 7, 7, 6, 5, 4, 4, 4, 3, 2, 2, 2, 1, 1). Our team leader in Ks, Geo Soto, has 7 GIDPs.
  11. LOL, that stood out to me as well. If he hasn't hit a bad stretch yet...yikes. I'm somewhat shocked that he hasn't heard any boos whatsoever yet. Jacque would be absolutely hated if he were hitting like Kosuke is right now. I honestly believe that his opening day performance is a huge factor still, in his treatment by the fans.
  12. That was wonderful. Thank you!! Z trying to come up with the word "pins" :D
  13. don't take it personally, but I gotta ask: did you empty the trash? :)
  14. Haha how very astute of you... for those who don't know... Jefe is boss in Spanish... hence the description. Perdón, soy un idiota.
  15. either your new nickname is confusing or your typing is ironic ;)
  16. sad day to quote a "Bernie M"
  17. Looks like it hasn't been mentioned here yet, but he's actually NOT going to the DL, it appears. http://oakland.athletics.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080806&content_id=3264787&vkey=news_oak&fext=.jsp&c_id=oak maybe a thread title change?
  18. I'm still pulling for Cubs/Nationals and Cubs/Pirates matchups come playoff time
  19. :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) a smiley for every cubs run scored in the inning
  20. congrats!!! being the superstitious type, I suggest you drag out negotiations through october ;)
  21. If we end up winning the World Series I would only slightly care -- i.e. it would seem (at least to the media, perhaps) as a fluke in the playoffs, since we weren't the best outright team in the division. But if we fail to win, or even make it to, the Series, I would especially hope we had a Division Crown to look back on. Sure it doesn't actually matter, but I happen to like the sound of "Chicago Cubs, Central Division Champions: 2003, 2007, 2008." Call me crazy :)
  22. Indeed, but I wouldn't be so sure the Cubs would have pulled the trigger on Harden if Hill were replicating last year.
  23. =D> That clip is all Brantley ever will be to me now.
