  1. Since it sounds like the biggest roadblock might not be finding a proposal that Padres and Cubs both like, but whether the Ricketts want to invest long-term in JP and his big-money years, this is an especially good point.
  2. 98% of your post could have come from my mouth, is how similarly I feel. But the owner can't do anything about the playoffs. The players simply need to play better once they get there. Put together an all-star team, fine, but even still, the playoffs are a crapshoot for predictions and preparations. Players need to play well.
  3. Doesn't Soto speak Spanish? He was born in Puerto Rico. I think he speaks in tongues, actually, so yeah, he should be good.
  4. You know who could clear all this up for us? Our knowledgeable insider, BRUCE MILES! someone, light up the Bruce signal! ;)
  5. thanks for the link . . . that's really nice. anyone else besides Wood and Karros do this for the Cubs? It's a really nice gesture.
  6. A lot of people are praising the possibility of JH not needing to include Vitters in the deal. But it needs to be noted that Mark DeRosa might have essentially been traded in this deal, too, something that some posters on here weren't so sure about (myself included). If it all goes down like this, I will certainly like the deal. It jus shouldn't be forgotten that eventually (knock on wood) getting Peavy probably necessitated losing not only the players we might trade for him, but also Derosa, Wood, and Marquis.
  7. didn't see this posted yet: http://www3.signonsandiego.com/stories/2009/jan/19/1s20padres-projected-payroll-over-target/?padres
  8. No one's comparing him to those people, and if they were, I think most would be very realistic regarding where he stands. And no one here has said he's a legend, either. Just a fan favorite (for his personality, work ethic, and charity work, I assume), someone who had one of the greatest moments in franchise (arguably league) history, and he thus far has overcome a career derailment to become a highly effective reliever. If we're already elevating athletes to icons, why not Kerry Wood.
  9. So, say we don't get Peavy -- whether JH is trying or not -- how does trade affect the team? Someone mentioned Olsen has options, is this true? Is he the 5th starter -- the very day Lou basically hands that to Marshall? His stats don't look great, but at a glance, he can be Marquis-esque at a lower price...
  10. Definitely. Just saying it's not necessarily true that 99% of posters here would OPS 000. But I'm just in an argumentative mood. thank god for the HBP!!
  11. I'm fairly certain 99% of the people on this board would have OPSd 000 last year. No point arguing about this really, but whatever... Even pitchers who have no apparent hitting talent whatsoever manage to luck into a hit now and then. Then again, they are athletic and coordinated enough to be extremely good at throwing a baseball, so that in itself separates them from the average person. I think there are probably some pitchers out there who are basically like an average guy off the street at the plate, though. Rich Hill is pretty horrendous. I don't know. there's really the only point that needs to be made -- a pitcher could have done what he did at the plate. Really really bad. It's also what makes baseball so interesting at times.
  12. not really, the results would have been just slightly easier to read.
  13. anyways, I found this on Cot's, so apparently, he doesn't know the details yet either
  14. Nice. Also, a little contract insight: http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090108&content_id=3736641&vkey=news_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc This is a good contract for the current economic state, but I wonder if Jim realizes that these backloaded contracts will kill him at some point. Am I understanding these quotes right? 09: $7m (incl. $2m bonus) 10: $17m (incl. $2m bonus) 11: $10m Doesn't look right, but I can't find any more explanations, or any clarity on the third (option) year, money-wise. Since 7 plus 17 plus 10 doesn't equal 30, probably not. I imagine it's something like: 2009: 5+2 2010: 9+2 2011: 12 '09 and '10 equals $20m (not including signing bonus, which I admittedly don't understand). I assumed the 30 must be the sum of all three years, not including a bonus?

  16. let me be the first to say this joke has written itself.
  17. If I recall, Troy O'Leary faced a lot of Irish-African-American backlash while here. :-))
  18. Link? Like most links in this thread, it can be found here: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/ However, that website links the actual source back to: here.
  19. Doubtful :) He seemed to almost plan to announce the Harden trade to upstage the Brewers acquiring CC last year.
  20. quite the saga this whole thing has been. up, down, up, down. over the weekend, the deal was on "life support" now it seems like such a sure thing. obviously today's reports are more accurate since they're telling me what I want to hear ;) honestly, though, the phrasing of these new reports and the general agreement on the facts within them does seem a bit confidence-inspiring. it sure would be nice to at least get this left-handed bat settled during the winter meetings here.
  21. http://www.dugoutcentral.com/blog/?p=2118 OH PLEASE :beg: oh geez, i really don't want to get my hopes up here, but that sure sounds good..... so what time is the announcement actually made, and is there anywhere to see/hear the live announcement?
  22. Hell, I remember when air was clean and sex was dirty. it's amazing you remember anything at your age ZING!! God grant me the Senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, the good fortune to run into the ones I do, and the eyesight to tell the difference. :-))
  23. I was waiting for that. Well, it's good that we're still supposedly in the running. Unfortunately our biggest advantage this entire time has been the fact that we were one of few (maybe at times, the only) team able to negotiate... Who knows, though. Obviously we need a third or fourth team involved, maybe with that it hand, we still stand a chance.
  24. We all pretty much knew it was going to be a 4-year deal anyway. Even if it's a player option (as it appears to be), it's not much of a disappointment... unless we think there's much chance of him being an ace the next three years, which I'm not seeing much confidence in in this thread...
