  1. 1 in a gazillion is an infinitely better chance of winning than 0 in a gazillion, which would be my odds ;)
  2. Thread continuing to be awesome.... Certainly the old-time action shots are interesting, but for some reason my favorites are the casual shots of the legendary names. Especially interesting to me are the pics of different generations of players meeting eachother. Seeing old decrepit versions of players like Ruth and Cobb meet the "up-and-comers" of those days is really cool.
  3. Anyone think Big Z doesn't know Larry Rothschild's name? Bob (paraphrased): Anyone talk to you late in the game Carlos (paraphrased): Geo talked to me . . . the pitching coach talked to me. :D
  4. This. Or at least on ESPN Classic tomorrow night so I can record it. I've been waiting for Z to get this since I was at his near no-hitter against San Diego last year. Great job Carlos. I've been waiting since he came up and began starting consistently... like so many have said, this guy's stuff was destined to be no-no quality all night eventually.
  5. Damn, nevermind, looks like it will have to be the HOU feed I'll add in pat and ron we'll get len/bob somewhere why? didn't mlb.tv add home and away broadcasts? Maybe they only archive the home ones, huh? bingo damn. such a great addition, but clearly could still be better. Oh well, I already heard len and bob, live. It's pat and ron I can't wait for now. :) keep up the good work, aramis fan.

  7. I think in all of these Wins arguments, there's a subtle grammatical issue behind most of the disagreement. Wins are not a meaningless statistic -- a good pitcher is more likely to get Ws than a worse pitcher. Wins are the point of baseball, like every sport. Thus, a good pitcher will often get a fair amount of wins. Wins are a virtually meaningless tool of stat analysis. As David said, "Why use inferior tools when superior tools are readily available for everyone." Wins add virtually no meaning to the statistical value of a pitcher (due to all of the non-pitcher factors; and look at all the comparative and qualifying words in my description above...), whereas other stats can give a more varied, accurate picture of that player's performance.
  8. I don't think cubs fans should be saying that much can be extrapolated from a four game span of a 162 game season. At least not after these last four games ;) So wait, the Cubs can't talk trash after a 4 game sweep, but the Brewers can talk trash for being 4.5 games back? The Cubs may be in a bad stretch, and it may have been only a 4 game sweep, but it's still a lot more than the Brewers got as far as "rights to trash talk". I don't think he was saying the Brewers have more room to talk, but rather that any 4-game stretch doesn't mean much. yep. just four games.
  9. why would it be different?
  10. I don't think cubs fans should be saying that much can be extrapolated from a four game span of a 162 game season. At least not after these last four games ;)
  11. I'm not so hot with math or charts... would the point of that chart be that since the FB and curve have such similar release points, they are harder to distinguish from eachother?
  12. I'd say your post is cub fan-like... Forgetting that we're essentially the best team in the league, yet happen to be in a three game offense-slump. ;)
  13. Sorry, but that's a losers mentality. I want this team to earn it dow the stretch, not rely on the Brewers fading. Silliness. Even if we had a 10 game losing streak to end a season and 2nd place had a 9 game winning streak, to give us the Championship by a single game . . . we were still a game better over the course of the season.
  14. what did he do pumped his fist after the K nothing, really what, like he was pleased or something?
  15. Envisioning Kent's comment to the media: "doctors talk too much."
  16. As is DeRosa to a lesser degree and Theriot to a lesser degree than that.
  17. if this is there only shot to get it in why wouldn't they just wait it out? especially since the Bucs are off tomorrow and Thursday's Cubs game back in Chicago (not exactly across the country) isn't until 7pm CST.
  18. depends on your point of view. Im sure bird fans are rolling. Doubt it. :)
  19. "How to Untuckem... Instructional video coming soon." :)
  20. Boston Americans -- the old name for the Red Sox
  21. Torn between Hill's futility and Dempster's success, I went with Dempster. I feel that a pretty good player's meltdown is more likely than a very average (to below average at times) player becoming dominant over an offseason, after a drastic role change, no less.
  22. What Kosuke must think of what the American players do for fun on the offdays... Wrestling is pretty big in Japan too. big, eh? So I've heard. ;)
  23. more details coming... LA Times reports edit: WOW. three topics all started at the same time. 6:43pm. :D
  24. Same here, Ron NEEDS to see the Cubs win a World Series before he goes, granted I also hope he lives 100 more years. Same goes for my dad. He's the reason I'm a Cub fan. He's getting up there in age, has lots of health problems, and is slowly going blind. I want it more for him than anyone else. That probably explains the quality of his color analysis. You've heard my dad analyze a Cub game before? :-k you started the description with "same goes for my dad" -- comparing santo and your dad. I think he's just messing with you :)
  25. i don't think anyone is failing to understand your main point. The last couple posts on the subject have been on a tangent of your point: the importance of runner-up results. From me at least, you'll get no argument about the silliness of discounting last place players.
