    that was my thought, too, especially since the wrigley renovations would seem to be far more expensive and time-consuming.

    i'd say the chances peavy is still pitching like an ace while being paid like one is greater than the chances of dempster pitching like an ace while being paid like one. agreed, and I'm suprised anyone would believe differently . . . particularly a purported professional "evaluator."

    I have no idea the source. Huh? Where'd this come from? I thought I read the Cubs weren't changing their offer (course I realize this is all speculation, but still...). And while I accept that I may very well be the only one who feels this way, but I'd hate to see Theriot go. I think this year was just the beginning for him. I mean, the Cubs have won their division both years he's been full-time. There are ways to drum up support for Theriot -- even on this board -- but that is not going to cut it . . . it's pretty pointless and misdirected praise.

    We can do this with every source. How many major outlets weren't reporting that we basically had no shot at Harden and didn't have the players the A's would want? Granted, I guess one would be inclined to cut someone like Rosenthal or Olney a bit more slack, but I don't necessarily see why (they're wrong a ton). The thing that annoys me about some of these journalists is their word choice, really. I figure they hear rumblings about possibilities and turn them into "expect it" or "very close" "intensity" or any other buzz word that is vague enough they can get away with, yet still sound very important. This is an assumption on my part, I admit, but it would explain why so many reports use this kind of language, yet rarely turn out to be 100% true.

    Not much new to report. The guy did say that the Braves were getting antsy b/c they want to move ahead in their plans. If they get impatient for this to happen they're stupid. already posted, only about 10 posts ago. I really am losing confidence that Peavy ends up here... Sorry, I have so many people on ignore reading a thread like this is like looking at a piece of swiss cheese. Actually a handful of people have said that same thing (maybe you didn't see that either ;)). It seems the ignore feature has some drawbacks.

    Not much new to report. The guy did say that the Braves were getting antsy b/c they want to move ahead in their plans. If they get impatient for this to happen they're stupid. already posted, only about 10 posts ago. I really am losing confidence that Peavy ends up here...

    I don't want Grace to replace Brenly, period. But, really, to say that those comments would make him an odd or bat choice is silly. He's opining on baseball and being very honest -- with a sentiment many on here would agree with. Just to repeat, though I don't want Grace in our booth... :)

    Obviously the article makes the case that there is more quality, generally speaking, among football announcers. I don't know if that's really true or not, since I'm not a big football watcher . . . But partly, I feel, I DO think football analysts are better, because they always teach me more. Frankly, there's very little that the average baseball analyst ever adds to my baseball knowledge base -- I honestly already know so much that their meager attempts at depth aren't good enough, whereas my average-ish football knowledge allows me to be taught and impressed more easily.

    From Slate.com Not an amazing article, but I always like seeing a somewhat high-profile acknowledgment of the awfulness of ESPN and so many individual people in baseball. It's thesis, though, is to really draw comparisons to football analysis, which he claims is far more intellectual.

    Nope. To be completely honest, if the Cubs are going to lose the series, I'd rather have them just get swept so they don't get my hopes up. Either win the series or get swept. I'm on the other side. I can't realistically expect a WS title, anyway -- the odds are too bad. So my sights are lower: compete for the championship, give it your best shot, look like you tried. So . . . yeah, a sweep would be bad and avoiding it would be a consolation. But part of me couldn't care less how or how badly we lose, just that we did (errr will . . . err, maybe) :)

    What are you talking about? Looks like a metaphor -- portraying the whole series in the form of a back-and-forth single game. In other words, don't worry. The game hasn't started yet; you're not missing it. ;)

    Too emotional Z isn't always bad. Actually, I think it would be. If he's "too" emotional, than his emotions exceeded some level. :)

    I was wondering that as well. If he doesn't get another chance to pitch, it definitely cost him money and likely cost him a chance to pitch in the blue pinstripes next year. You don't think the Cubs will bring him back? :-)) I was thinking the same thing. It seems losing that money and his chances of staying with the cubs are actually related . . . :)

    mlb.tv will only provide audio in the postseason. no way to watch online that I'm aware of . . . and if there is one out there, I'd guess it's not legal :)

    Gammons picked the Dodgers last night on SportsCenter. It should be a good series. I'm curious, what was his rationale? Actually, if you click the link there, there's a video for "BBTN: Dodgers-Cubs Preview" in their video playlist. But to spoil it anyway, he doesn't know what we're going to get out of Z and Harden, and he likes Lowe, Billingsly, and the dodger bullpen against our RH-heavy lineup.

    I'm not sure there's any more for Bruce to add. The original source in this story was Bruce and was rather clear; the controversy that has popped up came from a secondary source that cited (yet contradicted) him -- rotoworld. It's them we want to elaborate.

    I think the article is just isolating drafting, though, as it should. The Cubs have drafted well . . . the fact that, maybe, player development isn't great or we've let some guys go, shouldn't change the fact that we were right to grab them as amateurs.

    call me nostalgic and lame, but I would really like to win 100 games, despite it being unnecessary for us, of course. Admittedly, it would add obnoxious fodder to the national media, but it would still be cool for the sake of coincidence to win an even 100 games and win the WS 100 years since the last one.

    It's really just a case of not liking them when they were bad (or good against us, in Edmonds' case), and liking them when they are good. And when/if they are ever bad again, we'll not like them again. It's actually quite rational.

    They hold us by the balls as well. As I'm sure everyone knows, we need the Brewers to stay in this race until Sunday so the Mets and/or Phillies can throw Johan/Hamels and give us a much better chance of winning the series. We have a hand in them making the playoffs or not; they (by way of staying in the race) might affect a pitcher we face in the playoffs. I like our standing much better, but yeah, it's all connected.
