  1. Hendry is at the goal line. Will he fumble the ball out the back of the end zone?
  2. Wouldn't it be nice to add the Izturis money to Aramis' offer? Hendry is woeful.
  3. I'd like to see five years guaranteed, a sixth year vesting option, and a seventh year player option. I would not like to see the player option. I'm fine with seeing that 6th year option vest automatically if he averages 550 PA in years 4 and 5. I should clarify that I would prefer not to have the player option, but I would be confident that, if he were healthy enough to trigger the vesting option, the player option would be safe to offer as a carrot.
  4. I'd like to see five years guaranteed, a sixth year vesting option, and a seventh year player option.
  5. "I've decided I like guys who can dunk."
  6. Well, this is one of those rare occasions.
  7. A player opt-out clause is NEVER a good thing. It may be a necessary evil in getting a player to sign his name, but it is always bad for the club.
  8. If it is true that the bids were much lower than originally speculated, that could be a factor in causing the decision making process to be extended.
  9. A second-hand report from an impeccable source: Just saw this in one of the Japanese sports dailies ten minutes ago, literally hot off the press (the delivery guy was putting the freshly-printed papers in the stacks at the store): "Matsuzaka: Unexpectedly Cheap at 1.6 Billion!" Y1,600,000,000 is just over $13,000,000. Can that possibly be all it took to sign him? Following this were some brief comments about how exorbitant salary demands from Boras put teams off bidding higher. If so, please let it be the Cubs!
  10. In my opinion, Batista is far more likely to be a good value than Padilla or Lilly. My feelings certainly wouldn't be hurt if they won the Matsuzaka bidding, then signed Batista and took a flier on Randy Wolf.
  11. "George Hendrick, no relation to Ellie Hendricks." "Dave Owen, no relation to Paul Owens."
  12. Murton in LF, Drew in CF, Kearns in RF.
  13. I gather "Howard Eskin" is Philly-speak for "Mike North".
  14. True. You don't, however, necessarily need stellar pitchers.
  15. A's last season: .340 OBP. 7/14 in the AL. They were 2nd in the AL in walks. 1st in non-intentional walks. Their ISOD was 0.08, 2nd in the AL.
  16. For either one, the Rays can have any two pitchers in the organization not named Zambrano or Hill. Then, I get to take two pitchers off the table and then they can choose one other pitcher.
  17. I'm not Hoops, but I have Z, P, and O at $10, $4, and $1, respectively.
  18. When Piniella was hired, there were reports that he and Hendry had had some conversations about certain players who needed to go, or something to that effect. During Piniella's Mariners years, his primary catcher was Dan Wilson, who, by most accounts, was one of the best defensive catchers in the American League. I wonder if Piniella has asked for a better defensive catcher and, if so, will Barrett be sacrificed in trade (possibly in a deal for Wells)? How good a defender was Joe Oliver (his primary catcher on his World Champion Reds team)?
  19. Pat Burrell would be the worst defensive RF in MLB. He would be truly, truly awful.
  20. In the extremely unlikely event that Jim Hendry could acquire Aaron Heilman using Eric Patterson as the centerpiece, he should do so immediately.
  21. He will have been traded to the Cubs one week earlier.
  22. Trammell for starting shortstop. Izturis for bench coach.
