  1. Re-sign Ramirez. Trade for Kearns and Drew. Put Kearns in RF and Drew in CF. Sign Lugo for 2B. Lugo-Murton-Drew-Lee-Ramirez-Kearns-Barrett-Izturis
  2. Pat Burrell trying to play RF at Wrigley? Sweet Mother Of All That Is Good And Pure, save us from that.
  3. What do you figure Schmidt will command?
  4. The easiest part for John McLaren was telling the Mariners that he would accept an offer to become their bench coach in 2007. The toughest part, the one that got the 55-year-old McLaren so choked up with emotions, was telling newly appointed Cubs manager and longtime friend Lou Piniella that he wouldn't be joining him in Chicago.
  5. Actually, the Matsuzaka price seems like it is going to get out of hand. For my money, the best high-end pitching value this offseason is likely to be Schmidt. Give me Schmidt, one of the other Asians, and Wood.
  6. I am no Jim Hendry supporter, but I think that, if Derrek Lee had not gotten hurt, the team would have been merely below average, as opposed to worthy-of-historical-note bad. Hendry was also put in a bad spot with respect to Prior and Wood. Wood has been using up >10% of the payroll and not producing anything. One can criticize signing him to that deal in the first place, but the fact of the matter is that that was not a completely indefensible move. Prior is Prior. Other than bad luck, spreading money around on mediocre and bad players instead of investing in top talent is what hurt Hendry the most. If you have Juan Pierre, Todd Walker, Jerry Hairston, Jacque Jones, and Neifi Perez instead of Carlos Beltran, of course you're going to be in a particularly bad way when your superstar first baseman gets hurt.
  7. I doubt that the Padres will fail to exercise their option on Cameron.
  8. Craig Wilson would be a nice addition to the bench, but I'd rather just replace Jacque with Austin Kearns. It would be nice to have a RF who might throw someone out at the plate once in a while.
  9. I wouldn't be shocked if Austin Kearns is one of the new outfielders.
  10. Under contract for 2007: Jacque Jones - $5,333,333 Cesar Izturis - $4,150,000 Derrek Lee - $13,000,000 Michael Barrett - $4,400,000 Glendon Rusch - $3,250,000 Scott Eyre - $3,500,000 Bobby Howry - $4,000,000 Ryan Dempster - $5,000,000 Hopefully soon to sign an extension: Aramis Ramirez - $13,000,000 (estimated) Eligible for arbitration: Carlos Zambrano - $10,000,000 (estimated) Mark Prior - $4,000,000 (estimated) Will Ohman - $1,000,000 (estimated)
  11. If Piniella winds up breaking a chair over Mariotti's head, his hiring will have been a roaring success.
  12. If the Cubs are a very good team next season, it will be largely because of unexpected good performances by guys already on the team (Prior, Dempster, Izturis) and continued improvement by key young players (particularly Murton and Hill). Add a few nice acquisitions to that and you've got the makings of a WS winner. Unlikely, yes. Impossible, no.
  13. With Piniella, you can almost take it to the bank that Rothschild will be back. Why is that? What relationship do they have, other than LTC being Piniella's bullpen coach long ago?
  14. Just think how many Cliff Floyds and Jamie Moyers we can sign with all that money!
  15. I am a hothead I love to start a fight I'm a good player But clearly not that bright Look at me crossways And you're likely to wear it Yes, you guessed it My name is Michael Barrett
  16. The only thing Billy Hatcher knows about hitting is that it's difficult.
  17. Jim Hendry hurts my feelings Every time he speaks All manner of nonsense From his mouth it leaks Sadly, he's discovered He likes ball-catching guys And the myth that is clutch hitting Puts a twinkle in his eyes
  18. Kerry Wood, Mark Prior, and Carlos Zambrano were on the '02 Cubs. I hope they're all on the '07 Cubs.
  19. Dempster is our closer He scares me half to death When he comes in the ballgame I have to hold my breath He ain't no Mariano But keep one thing in mind You can't blow a save When you're way behind
  20. I wonder how a Cubs "Irish Drinking Song" might go.
  21. "The lovable losers" A label we despised Well, have no fear Our label's been revised Some teams have their speed freaks Others have their boozers The Cubs have neither! Just a bunch of "plain, old losers"
  22. These tears in my eyes Are really nothing new I think of Leon Durham And I cry - boo hoo hoo! The worst moment of all Came in the Bartman game A-Gon made that error Then Farnsworth fanned the flames
  23. The White Sox have Jon Garland The Marlins have ol' Willis Givin' away these All-Stars Is going to kill us Nolasco is the next one A pitcher we could use! Especially when Big Z's elbow Crumbles from abuse
