    Just use him out of the bullpen in a carefully controlled fashion. You might be able to make him into a top closer. It would be nice if the Cubs did something smart for a change.

    I believe it's less than common to have smaller contracts insured. I could be wrong about that. Even if it were insured, I assume that there would be a non-trivial deductable. Regardless, Rusch would have to be unwilling and/or unable to pitch. I expect him to come to camp and try to pitch.

    I'm wondering if this stuff transfers over to the new CBA, though. The classifications don't apply to the CBA, but either way, it came out after the new CBA. What do you mean by this? If I'm not mistaken, the rules for ranking free agents are specified in the CBA.

    Whether you believe Batista is "terrible", "decent", or "mediocre", paying $15-$20 million for Igawa would be an awful, awful decision.

    I'm assuming that: - The Cubs have lost on Matsuzaka. - The Cubs have essentially zero chance of signing Zito or Schmidt. - Batista will be much cheaper than the other second-tier guys.

    why would $5M per year be a waste? The evidence at hand suggests that he's going to be a dreadful MLB pitcher. Put that money toward a decent, reliable guy like Batista. which "evidence at hand" would that be? His fastball in the 84-86 mph range. Greg Maddux and Jamie Moyer are very, very rare pitchers.

    Guys like Mench who are "non-tender candidates" rarely get non-tendered. They usually get traded before the deadline.
