  1. Who gives a crap what side of the plate a guy hits? I don't care if the Cubs have all lefties or all righties as long as they hit. What side of the plate a guy swings from is right up there with one of the most silly ideas in baseball. Lou Piniella cares. He plays the lefty/righty odds straight by the book. I don't see why it's silly - better odds is better odds. I suppose you want Jacque Jones hitting against lefties? You are missing the point. Getting worked up about what side of the plate someone hits from is less important (the point it's not important) than than whether they can hit. I think you're the one missing the point. Of course the best hitter should play regardless of LH- RH. But it is significant that Lou Piniella believes in playing the percentages. That's fine so long as the manager is doing that where it applies to extreme cases ie Jones whom we all agree should never face LH pitching.
  2. Hernandez left with his team down, and his team never tied it up. The team would have had to tie it up or take the lead at some point to make sure Hernandez didn't get the loss, and they never did-they got down 5-0, and they closed it to 5-4 but never got it tied. Which is one of the many reasons why W-L record is a dumb way to judge a pitcher's value.
  3. It seems like Theriot at 2nd with DeRosa at SS is a more likely scenario. That being said I doubt they consider that a long term solution.
  4. Can we at least start calling him a wuss for not pitching through the pain?
  5. I disagree. Surely it is a tragedy and no one involved will ever forget but I suspect that most everyone else will. Just like we hardly ever think about the sniper in the DC area or that guy that shot up that McDonalds.
  6. I'm not sure it's a question of sample size so much as use. An effective middle reliever can and usually will make upwards of 75-80 appearances. That amount of pitching eventually catches up with most of them. So a 3 year split might not even tell when the decline will begin since historically relievers tend to fall hard and fast. The solution is to never give big contracts to FA relievers.
  7. In terms of service time, they gained a year.
  8. He was not a callup and was upset over it. So this would be his debut. It very likely worked out just the way Hendry would have hoped in that he has a legit reason to bring him up and can always send him back if he struggles but can keep him up if he does well.
  9. Well, sure for a big market team I would agree, but I would think our options would be limited in dealing with certain teams.... The asking price in the offseason was probably too high. The Angels are struggling to score runs. they might be a possible destination and they could certainly afford Jones' contract. BTW, how's little league going?
  10. Will The Riot get any starts in CF? How much time is Ramirez supposed to miss?
  11. Wouldn't this be a good time to trade Wade Miller to the Yankees? They seem pretty desparate for SP to the extent that they are using guys that haven't pitched above AA and have the dreaded TBA slotted for Saturday. Trade Miller, get whatever, promote Cherry and move Guzman into the rotation.
  12. This seems like as good a place for this as any. I caught a little bit of the Pads-Dodgers game. Seeing Juan Pierre wearing #42 then hitting a weak grounder to 2nd, I was really hoping he'd throw home. They're talking about making a new movie about Jackie Robinson with Robert Redford as Branch Rickey. I think they have to get Cuba Gooding JR. to play Jackie Robinson.
  13. I'd take 276/359/473 and 105 OPS+ from a 23 year old third baseman. I didn't even catch the reference to Narron. I was thinking of Juan and thought "might have helped the team." Wonder if biittner was too. Yes I was. Though I have to say that I still think it's somewhat less than courageous to bench a young player to prove a point.
  14. If you want to send a message bench someone for not running out a pop up that is actually good.
  15. at least 6 more days to push back his years of service.
  16. I'm not in any way an expert but it seems to me with the high number of transactions, promotions, demotions, etc. that go on in minor league ball its pretty difficult to get any really good idea of who will actually be there after a couple weeks into the season. I'd say it's more fun to go to the games and take note of the guys you're impressed by then look them up afterwards.
  17. Miller will be missed. Or not.
  18. I think Miller will provide some insightful analysis but his partner Joe Morgan will spout cliches and nonsense making the game unwatchable.
  19. How about the development of Batting average as a kept stat. When did it start and did people despise it as much as old timers currently hate Warp3 etc. It might be hard to find info but I think it would be interesting
  20. IF Carpenter really does miss significant time the Cards will just sign Jesus Sanchez and he'll win 17 games with a 3.30 ERA and Duncan will be a genius again. Surely when Walt Jockety sold his soul to the devil to make every steaming pile of crap into an all star he took this possibility into account.
  21. I'd be interested to hear what Lou Piniella thought about Cantu. It seems like he was reluctant to play him at one point.
  22. Women's final four belongs on ESPN8- the Ocho.
  23. OMG that is funny. Anyone seem that weight loss crap that had Dan Marino? They have Kruk on there with this quote: "My wife thinks I look less disgusting now"
  24. I don't think he's saying that Dusty was able to fix Murton. I think he's saying that Baker's advice accidentally helped Murton.
