  1. There is a rooftop flag for each post-1904 postseason berth. They don't indicate championships or levels of advancement. The "1908' flag looks just like the "1998" flag. The original design for the new bleachers included flagpoles that presumably would have held flags for all the pennants and division titles since 1876, but the latest changes wiped them out. That would have been a laugher. "18xx" flying high atop the stadium. Would have been good for a laugh for opposing teams watching a pathetic franchise trying to celebrate anything they can. Grasping at straws, really.
  2. I'd love for the White Sox to go up 2-0, then choke, the Red Sox blow them out in the 5th game on thier way to victory, and one of the pitchers makes the choke sign to the White Sox bench. Wonder how Ozzie would react then. I bet the look on his face would be priceless.
  3. Yeah, he'll be cheap. You can DH him. Make sure you have a short LF porch. Get your 600 and retire with dignity, Sammy. As soon as you hit it, tip your cap and call it a career.
  4. Considering his shrunken body and minuscule stats I think the thing Sammy doesn't have this year is steroids... Three posts. I think that's a record. Please explain why it is out-of-bounds to suggest that he was on steroids. In light of the fact that he is a confirmed cheater (cork) and liar (game 162 a year ago), I'd say its perfectly reasonable to do so. I think it's pretty unnecessary to make a comment like that in a thread discussing where Sammy might play next year. It has absolutely no relevance at all. Its absolutely relevant considering the effect on his performance. Is his age and slowing bat also irrelevant? This thread is about where Sammy might play next year... what do steroids have to do with that? Sorry, I just don't see any logic in mentioning roids EVERY time Sosa's name is brought up on here. How is it not relevant? Discussing his future obviously must include what kind of numbersyou can expect from him. If he's not on steroids (and he used to be), a team should be worried about that, since it means he's probably worth next-to-nothing. And, of course steroids are going to come up when we talk about him. It's a very defining issue for him. If someone is so worried about a player getting bad-mouthed they should avoid any topic that concerns that player. I've got no problem with sammy-lovers or loyalists of any other kind, but "don't mention 'roids" complaints are as annoying and unproductive as "he is too on 'roids" statements. And you're right, there's no proof, so it's a circular and unwinnable argument. Let the "sammy-bashers" say their piece and then you can say yours, but we can all be civil about it. As for the topic of discussion. I predict that Sammy will wait a few months, and then very quietly retire. Proof, please.
  5. Somebody has been studying his monthly splits. Unfortunately, a lot of fans and we will see if Hendry is included, remember those hot April streaks and think they pertain to the whole season. Oh yeah, and the Gold Glove is a joke. Not a joke, but close. Offense does factor into it, as usually you won't see a regular who is awesome with the glove, but hits .220 win the Gold Glove.

In light of the fact that he is a confirmed cheater (cork) and liar (game 162 a year ago), I'd say its perfectly reasonable to do so. I don't think it's out of bounds to SUGGEST it. But some people report it as if it's a proven and confirmed fact. And it's in EVERY SINGLE SAMMY THREAD!! He didn't test positive, so he's innocent of all charges. Not saying he never did it, but I won't believe he did until some sort of proof comes out. People seem to let thier dislike of him color thier common sense judgement. People don't seem to understand that as a player gets older, his skills tend to decline. Sammy is older. His skills are declining. It happens to everyone except for CONFIRMED steroids takers like those in San Fransisco. As I've said before, I'm damned glad that trials aren't held in the court of public opinion, because some people just seem to be out for blood in some cases.
  8. Well, as it stacks up, it's Yankees/Angels Red Sox/White Sox Cardinals/Padres Braves/Astros What do you think the keys for each series will be, and who do you like in each round? I'll take the Cards, Astros, Yankees, and Sox  . I think the key for the Sox/Sox series will be the Red Sox pitching staff. You have a fantastic offense against a good pitching staff. Some will say that the ChiSox have the advantage because "good hitting beats good pitching". Not always. As hot as Manny and Ortiz are right now, I don't know if any pitcher in the league can get them out consistently. If the Red Sox can hold down the White Sox batters, I think they'll win that series. Cards should win in a cakewalk. As much as I'd like to see the Pads bump them off, it's not happening. Astros/Braves is another interesting one. Braves are good, but they never are able to figure it all out in the playoffs. Astros have great pitching, Clemens/Oswalt/Pettite should be able to shut almost anyone down in a short series. Angels are a scrappy team and always seem to play the Yanks tough. I like them in this series.

  10. The Bears? Actually, I'm a Packer fan. Spare me your pity.
  11. As much as it pains me to say it, Sammy doesn't have it anymore. As much as I'd love to see him have a pretty decent final year and have a last hurrah of sorts, it won't happen. I hope he hangs it up and retires with some dignity.
  12. No more Cubs until April. Now what am I gonna complain about?
  13. Hopefully, the last at-bat of his Cub career. If he's in a Cub uniform next year, I won't even bother paying attention to this team. As for Neifi, Patterson, etc
  14. I feel bad for the Phillies. If I were a fan of an NL team and I had to count on the Cubs to win to better my playoff chances, I think I'd just pack it in because it ain't happening.
  15. Hopefully, the last at-bat of his Cub career. Not if Dusty has anything to say about it. Pray that he doesnt.
  16. 1 more strike and the disaster known as the Cubs 2005 season is over.
  17. We almost forced a 1 game playoff. Almost. Stupid throwing error. We could have forced it. There are some people probably burning the Cubs in effigy right now on the streets of Philly.
  18. Zero-tolerance policies NEVER work. EVER. They always wind up screwing some totally innocent person and making the governing body look like a jackass. Like the 6-year-old girl from this area who was suspended from school because she had a plastic butter knife in her lunch bag. She was suspended from school under its "zero tolerance" weapons policy. They never work, and if baseball institutes one, I guarantee you some innocent party is going to get screwed royally. I'd put money on it.
  19. Let's count the errors. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine. Yep, still dumb. 1) Brewers should be capitalized. 2) It is improper usage to end the sentence with "do better". 3) Very poor form to have a compound sentence that mixes verb tenses. 4) Is he giving one "example" or two? 5) Mixing punctuated and non-punctuated items in a list is poor form. Are you an english teacher, Tim? ;) Was this guy actually here, or was this on WSI?
  20. This is what I'm hoping for. Since my "I want the Yankees shut out of the playoffs" fantasy is messed up (thank you very much, Red Sox and Indians), I want the Cubs to play spoiler. I want a damned 1-game playoff!!
  21. The Cubs are always like that when they're bad. They can hang with the good teams, but get pounded by the crappy ones.
  22. gAy-Rod homers, 7-2 Yanks. Damn Yankees. Never count on the knuckleball in a must-win game.
  23. I like to salute him with just one finger.
  24. Winner today clinches at least a tie of the AL East. Also, if Cleveland loses today, the winner is guaranteed a playoff spot. Wakefield got knocked around in the first two innings. I don't know if I'd have gone with him today. The knuckleball is such a hit-or-miss pitch that you can't take that risk seeing that this is THE most important game of the series to win. Go Sox. Nothing would please me more than the Yankees shut out of the playoffs, and Stienbrenner going absolutely ape poopy.
