  1. The funny thing is that I haven't even heard his name mentioned. If I'm a sportswriter (and God willing, someday I will be) he's one of the first people I get comments from, after the Umps, Scoscia, and AJP.
  2. Has any reporter or media outlet attempted to reach Bud Selig that anyone knows of? I'd like to hear him comment on that.
  3. I wouldn't be for it for balls and strikes, but maybe for check swings, plays at the bases, and stuff like what happened last night.
  4. The "antics" probably being not running out grounders, and those rumors that we hear from time to time that he's "lazy." Personally, from what I've seen/heard, I have no problem with Ramirez.
  5. I'd rather have Prior and ARam than ARod, and Walker rather than Cano.
  6. We're giving up WAY too much there. No way do we trade Prior AND ARam for A-Rod. I don't think a single player in baseball is worth both Prior AND ARam.
  7. Yes, the Angels shouldn't have given up the hit, But, The ump shouldn't have blown the call. This is squarely on the ump.
  8. I understand that umpires make mistakes. Especially on those bang-bang plays where a runner could be out by a half a step, I can understand an umpire getting one of those wrong on occasion. To err is human. But the call last night was one of the worst I've seen ever. The only worse call I can remember seeing is of that blown call at 1B in the 1985 World Series.
  9. Does anyone know if Bud Selig has been asked for comment?
  10. Is that a MLB rule for the ump to yell that? Also, what compelled AJP to run? AJP is a catcher and he knows the rules and he ran while Paul thought otherwise. Yeah, I want to know if it's REQUIRED for the ump to yell that. If it's not it should be, and the 1st and 3rd base umps also need to chime in immediately if they see a dropped ball. It would actually be a good idea to have the line umps approve all strikeouts to avoid uncertainty. I agree and this should be a rule but if it's not Paul assumed wrong. I have no idea why the umps didn't get together... all of them and talk about this. From the blurb I saw only the two of them got together. Because in the massive egoverse that consumes MLB umpires, they are completely and totally infallable. No umpire has ever made a bad call. Just ask him. It's completely because of ego. Because they control the game, most tend to think they're above it, and therefore not subject to review on any of thier calls. See: Bucknor, C.B.
  11. I was listening to the Score earlier today for like 15 minutes or so in the car. They had fans on that basically said "well, bad calls are a part of every sport at every level." True. But that does not mean a bad call should stand when it is found to be a bad call. For the life of me I'll never figure out how people can be against replay in any sport, especially in a big game like this, to make sure the correct call is made and a team isn't robbed of a victory. Not saying the Angels would have won, but at least they wouldn't have lost because of a BS call. And I also find it amusing that the people on the good end of a bad call always say "Oh, well that's part of the game, blah blah blah." I just wonder how loud White Sox fans would be complaining if that play happened when the Angels were at bat.
  12. There is precedent for a replay. The George Brett pine tar game was replayed after appeal. That wasn't a playoff game, though. This decision will stand.
  13. Outshined_One submitted that link to Fark with the awesome headline. Why isn't he that funny here?
  14. When I was at college channel 20 was the campus information channel. At the time, WGN was channel 20 in this market. Good thing I wasn't in the dorms for that long. It wasn't the same listening on the radio when I could watch it on TV.
  15. I do think replay should be instuted for close calls. What could someone possibly have against making sure the correct call is made? Someone would have to call for it. The umps probably wouldn't because of thier egos, and I don't know how well letting opposing managers replay things would go over, but you'd have to have someone in charge of replays who would call for one on a play like this and then have the umps look at it and review. i agree with you. Situations like these are why baseball needs some form of a replay system for real close calls. Robot Umpires!!! NOW!!! well im not saying for EVERY play but situations like this and the Crede play where he got thrown out at 2nd (and yes Crede was definitely out at 2nd, just using it as an example though)..it would be nice if they could review them to make sure they are right. I very much doubt we'll hear talk about replay in the coming days. Or, if we do, it'll be speculation by sportscasters and MLB won't even consider the idea. Of the four major sports, baseball is the one most reluctant to change, IMO.

  17. I can't hate the White Sox for that, though. Put the Cubs in the White Sox situation. Say it's Walker at the plate and the same thing happens, and he runs down to first, etc etc. We'd all think it was great. Sure,we'd admit that we got a huge break, but we'd take the win. I blame the umps, not the White Sox. There are very, very few things that could make me root for the Cardinals. I'd still root for the White Sox if the two teams met.
  18. Wonder what The Score is saying right now. I don't have access to a radio.
  19. The ump called him out twice, actually. Once as he swung and once just before he ran down to first.
  20. That's the kind of call that would go against the Cubs.
  21. Holy crap did the Angels get screwed. I'd be royally pissed if I was on the Angels. That call was 100% Grade A bullcrap.
  22. I think it's a conversation worth having. It's not like trading Pie for Preston Wilson or Aubrey Huff. ARod is a top 3 player. Offer Pie and see if they bite. If they don't, you've wasted minutes on a cell plan, and nothing more. I agree. Like I said, make an initial offer revolving around Pie and see who we have that they'd be interested in, and see what you can do. I'd definately do Pie, Hill, and Corey for A-Rod. Hell, I'd even throw in Williams, or even Walker if they twisted my arm. Although preferably I'd keep Walker and have him at 2nd with Cedeno as a Super Sub.
  23. I think Pie would definately get the Yankees to the bargaining table. What we throw in with him, however, would obviously make or break the deal.
  24. ESPN says both games are at 7.
  25. Ummm... stay healthy for a full season? After reading through the first page, I thought that the thread had made it past the "OMG NOMAR CAN'T STAY HEALTHY!1!111!" stage, but I guess I was wrong. Now you know how I feel anytime I see a steroid reference 5 posts into any Sammy thread.
