  1. i might have voted "leadoff" if that was an option. at least it would've made me think. but second is a good enough option that i can pick that over the ambiguous "somewhere else."
  2. i think the cubs will be thrilled if he puts up numbers like that. the problem will be if he puts up a line like, say, .215/.271/.333. If they leave him alone he will be fine. i have thought that about a lot of cubs' hitting prospects.

  4. I saw that I thought it was Truffle posting with his disdain for the older population. I can't believe I am saying this but Wood has seem to finally matured and looks a lot more confident. 98 mph is showing a heck of a lot of talent, along with his other pitches. I give Marmol his due but I see him as one more year and more more pitch away from that position. If he would have been a kid with a background as a pitcher I think he would be ready now. It has also worked out to his advantage as far as injuries to that arm. Good to be in this delema There are loads of effective relievers with only two good pitches, I think Marmol should get the nod, the only disaster that could come of this is if Lou chooses Howry. how exactly would that be a disaster?
  5. haven't people learned from last year? everyone got all steamed about bp's 72 win projection for the white sox, and they won EXACTLY 72 GAMES. and then he busts out the "heart/pride" business, which made me instantly forward the article to FJM. they might not get to it because there are a lot of stupid things written in the spring, but come on, rick morrissey.
  6. Um, did he seriously write that? Your link to the entire article: http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/833560,CST-SPT-cub09.article But I can see where you wouldn't believe me. 1. Look up Pie's stats this spring. 2. See that he has an OPS over 1.000 and a solid BB/K rate of 4/5 3. Forward sports writer's article to FJM.
  7. i'd definitely prefer cedeno to cintron. with cedeno you have a guy who at least has a shot at becoming an average big league shortstop. cintron, you know he's going to be terrible offensively.
  8. Yes, this is what happened and UCLA was given the game. You can't draw up what the defender did any better than how he did it. I couldn't care less who won the game, but Stanford got robbed. "He drew contact when he went to the basket," Hill said. "It was still on him to make the free throws." That's Lawrence Hill, the guy the foul was called on. ETA: I don't know that I would have called the foul in that situation but that doesn't mean it isn't a foul. I don't care what the kid says. He doesn't have a great idea of exactly what happened a bang-bang play in that kind of situation, plus he may have just been taking the high road. Look at the replay. It clearly wasn't a foul. He was completely vertical and it was clear as day (especially on the x mo replay) that he got 100% ball. The foul call was on the body contact, not the block shot which I agree was 100% clean. http://telemachus.smugmug.com/gallery/4433994_5ZiTX#262889690_6QaFu-A-LB On the first replay, you can clearly see the ref doing the hip check indicating that it was a body contact foul, not a foul on the block. The x-mo and the third replay show that while the shot was blocked cleanly, Hill created body contact. I don't know how you could say Hill made "minimal, if any contact." That said, I wouldn't have called it (then again I have no clue what the hell Pac-10 refs are doing half the time). i just saw this play for the first time today. if that is a foul, then pretty much any time a player drives to the hoop and is contested, a foul can be called. simply a horrendous call and a classic case of home cooking.
  9. i think the previous inning, some moron fan reached out and hit a ball that was probably going to be a home run, but because of interference it was ruled a double. i'm pretty sure that's how it went down.
  10. i thought roids were banned in baseball now
  11. good, bucknell's season is over.
  12. (a) it was written by the brother of someone who plays for south fayette, which certainly calls his objectivity into question. i also highly doubt that the player was hurling basketballs into the crowd and spouting off racial slurs without any rebuke from the officials or coaches. (b) media reports i saw of the game suggested that the conduct of the South Fayette fans was very unbecoming, and that pryor actually exercised a good deal of restraint until the game was over. given how much media was at the game, don't you think that if he had conducted himself in the way that this piece claims, a real news source would have reported on it?
  13. My reaction exactly. Regardless, I'm not drafting him in the first two rounds now, maybe not even first three. I heard a surgeon on XM today talking about it - it has little or no impact on his batting. Only affects his throwing - i would be running anytime he gets the ball in his hand this year. Hmmm. That's amazing that it won't affect hitting. I still have the feeling it will be an issue all year so I dropped him off my fantasy board all together. Ok. It's been an issue since 2003 and he has had some pretty ok fantasy years since then. according to woody paige on friday's PTI, it's been an issue for him since 1993. woody's not great with dates. or anything else for that matter.
  14. solid soccer riot down in cali, colombia yesterday.
  15. Except with the 1.000 OBP, you have a .000 SLG. (approximately). That's not true. If he walked every at-bat, he wouldn't have a slugging percentage. It would not exist. Which...is the definition of Zero. no, something divided by zero is most certainly not the definition of zero.
  16. wait geovany soto hit 3 homers in the big leagues, and none of them make this highlight reel? for shame! i forgot how terrible that announcer was during the cubs-sox series. "lee gets the bat on it"??? it was a freakin grand slam, wtf kind of home run call is that?
  17. 4 goals, that's a season high right? Nah, they scored 6 once. But 4 is still shocking. I thought we'd just win every game 2-1. Have you been to the Prudential Center yet? Or did Barry Melrose scare you away? I'm like 15 minutes away from it and I might be going soon. suggestions: 1) hope you like organ. the devils love organ like christopher walken loved cowbell in that snl skit. devils going on the power play? organ. devils give up a goal? organ. devils take a penalty? MORE ORGAN! 2) drink plenty of caffeinated beverages. 3) don't leave your seat except during intermissions; you don't want to miss the goal. 4) probably don't want to go out in newark after the game 5) get your tickets early; the dozens of devils fans out there might make it hard to find tickets if you wait til the last minute.
  18. and of course the devils win yet another low-scoring game in the last minute/overtime. if they had a pythagorean record in the nhl, i'm pretty sure they'd be outperforming it by about 20 points.
  19. more clown shoes referee work in the NHL. DiPietro intentionally lifts the net off its moorings to prevent a goal in the second period - basically the same thing happened recently, but the pens were awarded a goal - and the NHL doesn't allow the goal. then bill guerin, who's generally a piece of crap, throws a dirty elbow/forearm at the head of scottie upshall; probably should be five and a game, or at least four. jason smith comes after guerin and gets 4 for roughing, while guerin gets 2. then in the third period, the fishsticks score a goal and scottie upshall gets hit after the puck is in, and upshall gets the only 2 for unsportsmanlike conduct. nhl referees must be the blindest bastards in sports. everyone is noticing it, and buttman doesn't do a thing. he makes bud selig look like pete rozelle.
  20. yes there is. it's spring training. and a split squad game for that matter.
  21. i was out with some friends last evening, one of whom is a devils fan. he was watching the game on his laptop, and i was shocked to see the devils win a boring, low-scoring game in overtime! first time for everything, i guess.
  22. maybe rae carruth can be the cowboys' slot receiver next year.
  23. i'd be shocked if the guy who never makes an out does not end up contributing more offense in the end than the guy who hits one home run every game. i don't really know how to prove it though. i'll leave that up to someone smarter/more simulation-savvy than myself.
  24. No, going by what I saw from Felix Jones.........HERE IN THE HEART OF SEC FOOTBALL. I like Meddenhall, but he isn't in the same class with Jones. Had it NOT been for the presence of Darren McFadden, Jones could have easily rushed for 1800 yrds, and without a doubt would had been the Heisman winner. In layman's term....Felix Jones is a better pro prospect, IMO, then Meddenhall, who has only one good yr to his name. The only reason why Jones is considered a low first rd, high 2nd rd pick (if he there when the Bears pick in the 2nd rd, they would be FOOLS to not take him, if they are planning to draft a RB) is because he had to split time with McF. much like how ronnie brown and cadillac williams were not drafted high because they split time at auburn.
