take out his rookie year, when he was 20 and his team was God-awful, and he's been around league-average for WHIP and ERA+. if that sucks, then half the league sucks.

holy cross' 15-12 record and #175 rpi is probably not enough for an at-large bid this year.

there has to be a better CF year than Dernier's 1984. hell at least a couple of the brian mcrae and corey patterson years had to be better. rod beck's 1998 and JoeBo's 2003 were both better than lee smith in 1984. and lee smith's 1983 is miles better than all of them. he might've had a horseshoe up his rear that year, but rick wilkins' 30 homer year blows jody davis' 1984 out of the water.

granderson overproduced - probably a little, but he's still very good. ordonez overproduced - hard to disagree here guillen's glass - he's stayed relatively healthy the last two years. might do it again this year, who knows though. rentawreck overproduced - no doubt, but he's still a good hitter for a SS rodriguez blows - yup, why the crap did the tigers pick up his option this year? vina overproduced - I'm assuming you mean polanco. True, but again, he's a pretty good hitter. sheffield's glass - if his wrist is okay, i'd expect 140 games out of him. bonderman sucks - this one i don't get. you said that a lot of guys overproduced, which was pretty true, but last year bonderman was worse than his previous 4 years. i'd argue that he underproduced. i don't think he sucks. willis sucks - again, he's not great, but he's probably better than he pitched last year. i'd expect him to at least bounce back some and be a solid #3, if healthy. rogers sucks - depends if he has anything left, he was at least a good #4 in his later years, if not more than that. robertson sucks - he's a solid back of the rotation guy. doesn't suck like a lot of #4/5 guys suck. verlander's going to break down - people have been saying this for 3 years now. maybe it'll happen, but i'm not sure how people can keep saying with confidence that he's going to break down. jones sucks - yes.

i don't think i could stand a red sox-mets world series. wonder if they'd show the buckner play at all? what is it about the tigers that doesn't impress you? their lineup is rather beastly. and the pitching should be pretty solid. i find it hard to believe that one out of (red sox, yankees, tigers, indians) has to miss the playoffs. all those teams would seem to be a shoo-in if they played in the NL.

who is the most consistently bad team in the pac 10 in basketball? it can't be either of the washingtons, i don't think. not oregon. not ucla, usc, cal, stanford or arizona. i seem to recall arizona st occasionally not being terrible. so is it oregon st?

Even without Gallagher, the team has Zambrano, Lilly, Hill, Marquis, Dempster, Marshall, Hart, possibly Marmol, and anyone who might break out this year(Samardzija, Veal, Atkins, Holliman) as available starters. I agree with opposing this deal, but the one thing we certainly have is starting pitching depth(even if Gallagher is dealt) to make sure Les Walrond doesn't see Wrigley Field again without a ticket. i guess i am not even considering marmol since he (a) sucked as a starter and (b) was lights out in the pen. i'm also assuming that dempster will either be terrible or will hurt himself. so then that cuts down the options to zambrano, lilly, hill, marquis, marshall. it's a pretty solid bet that marshall will hurt himself; is hart for real, or was last year a fluke? i don't think samardzija, veal, atkins or holliman are viable options, unless one of them really makes a mountain of progress in a few months.

btw did anyone read the thread title and immediately think "reds catcher david ross"? i figured the cubs were going to go trade for a veteran because they were scared to start the year with soto.

count me in the camp that is opposed to this deal. if we were still stuck with turds like delino deshields or whatever other trash we've rolled out to 2b in the past few years, i'd be for it. but the upgrade from derosa to roberts is not a huge one, so i wouldn't support the cubs paying a big price. my big problem with the deal would be including gallagher. this club is not deep in major league-ready starting pitching, and if a couple of guys go down - thankfully we have pitchers that historically have been pretty healthy, knock on wood - we'll be back to starting guys like walrond. no thanks.

considering that jim seems intent on dumpster-diving for righthanded OF who can play center, i suppose he could do a lot worse.

It's possible to still get value out of his career. The key is to keep him around for his peak years, limit the financial commitment, and be prepared to cut ties when he becomes expensive. Jacque Jones level production, at minimum wage, and as the 5th or 6th best bat on the team, isn't bad. That's especially true if he's a CF. You'd then have to commit financially to having greater production elsewhere. Ideally you'd trade him as he approaches 30 and before he hits his last year of arbitration. Maybe you can sucker some team into getting quality. But even if you just let him walk, by and large that would have to be considered a successful investment. the problem is, what if felix pie turns out to be a good everyday player. i mean, i guess that's not a problem, but colvin will in no way be good enough to man one of the corner spots. i suppose he could be a 4th outfielder, but I'd just rather trade him now before everyone realizes that he isn't that good.

tomlinson had about 1000 touches at tcu. thurman thomas had 900 carries at ok state. emmitt smith had 700 at florida. having a lot of college carries, i think, doesn't necessarily mean that one is going to have a shortened nfl career. i think this calls for a poll!

i will have to try this. i normally get the standard grey poupon dijon mustard. i don't do the standard yellow mustard unless i'm at a house or other venue that does not offer grey poupon. they are the mustard masters, by far.

i don't think it's likely, but given that he has done it once in the past 3 years and wasn't far off last year, i certainly wouldn't rule it out.
