  1. Stop it with these fallacies. The Orioles scored more runs than the Cubs last season. i would sure hope so. having a dh makes scoring runs easier than having guys like ted lilly and rich hill at the plate. How they scored the runs is irrelevant to this conversation. no it's not. you suggested that brian roberts wouldn't have better hitters behind him. to support this, you said the orioles scored more runs than the cubs last year. the orioles had a worse ops+ last season, and only scored more runs because they use a dh rather than a pitcher. additionally, the orioles scoring more runs was a function of their entire lineup, while the argument of lineup protection would only really be relevant to the players hitting in the next 1-3 spots below roberts. assuming he'd hit 2nd on the cubs, if they kept soriano at leadoff, you'd be comparing: derrek lee aramis ramirez kosuke fukudome to the guys who usually hit behind roberts last year: #2: corey patterson/melvin mora/chris gomez #3: nick markakis #4: miguel tejada/occasionally kevin millar

  3. Hahaha. I'm glad that I wasn't logged in so I was able to see this gem. I don't see what's so crazy about that. His OBP was .377 last year. He's stating with certainty that Roberts will reach an OBP that he has only reached once. That's about 35 points above his career average, and Roberts has been over .350 only twice in his career. It's similar to saying Soriano is a shoo-in for a .360 OBP. it's not like that at all, really. roberts has had a an obp over .385 in 2005, and within a few points of that last season. that's two of the past three years. soriano has never had a season with a .360 obp, and he's only had one season in which he's been within 20 points of that figure. and the one year that he had a .351 obp, his walk total was inflated because he was IBB'ed 16 times and probably pitched around several other PAs. that won't be the case for roberts.
  4. FTH is with these uniforms? are we trying to look like the state flag of texas?
  5. yeah i was playing poker with a guy who put $100 on louisville -8. he was up $800 heading into this past weekend and was on a $750 losing streak, and he looked like he was about to lose it when louisville lost that big lead. when harangody made the third trey with 0.4 left, costing him a push, he just got up, went outside, and had a smoke. i think it was either that or he was going to break something inside.
  6. oh hell yes....motherlovin' tacosalad.
  7. That's surprising considering how successful he was in college. Don't listen to Mike Mayock about this one. That guy has a vandetta against McFadden for some reason. I love Mendenhall but if you gave me the choice of either, I'd take McFadden without much thought. yeah i have a hard time believing that the guy was running about 6 yards a pop without breaking some tackles. His high rushing average is due in large part (at least in my opinion) to his breakout runs he'd get alot. I get to see a good bit of SEC football down here and it seemed to me like McFadden's rushes would go something like 2 yards, no gain, 7 yards, 2 yards, 18 yards, 1 yard, -3 loss, 28 yards, 70 yards, 2 yards, etc. He depended totally on his speed and would rarely bowl over people, like Peterson (uber-stud), or juke people out of their shoes, like Bush (a bust). He seemed to just take off and people wouldn't be able to get a hand on him. With the speed the NFL seems to have at LB these days, I don't think he's going to get those big runs like he got in college. the nfl doesn't have 4.27 speed at linebacker.
  8. my God, is it your goal to alienate every member of this board by opening day? you're certainly well on your way.
  9. pretty much, it's "oriole park at camden yards"... but camden yards is a neighborhood in baltimore. calling it sears park at wrigley field just seems completely redundant, basically it's just naming the ballpark twice. sorta like Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, eh? exactly, except nobody knows who medlar or lubrano are
  10. that's it, we're winning the world series this year. these 2+ innings have sold me.

  12. pitcher must be missing the plate by several feet
  13. i wouldn't say meph's is increasing... joe morgan would say, he's been very consistent in that department.

  15. i will say it yet again, the cubs had the 5th highest payroll in major league baseball last year. renaming the ballpark isn't necessary to be financially competitive; renaming the ballpark doesn't guarantee anything except that the ballpark has a different name.
  16. well, this should ensure that his calendar is clear on yom kippur
  17. see that is your problem. i'd imagine that if i were on the field with them, i'd bring a gun or at least a two-by-four. i'd get 'em on the ground.
  18. even if you don't like the original person/people for whom the venue was named, nobody remembers who they are any more. it's not like the cubs play in hitler park.
  19. If Trump owned THE CUBS, you'd be OK with him changing it to Trump Field? Because, if that's the case, then I understand this crazy (non-)issue even less. No. It has already been named Wrigley Field and has been that way for damn near a century. It should always remain Wrigley Field. so basically you are saying that you want to get drunk in the bleachers and watch the cubs be losers forever? because there's no way this team can be competitive without renaming the ballpark, i mean there are only 25 other franchises with payrolls as low as the cubs!!!
  20. there's a poll on chicagosports.com, where more than 80% of the voters oppose renaming wrigley field. it's fine to disagree with them, but lose the condescension.
  21. he had strong legs but not huge legs. i guess if we're rating guys on most intimidating, then we should talk about mr. t or magnus ver magnusson.
