  1. unfortunately, marquis will struggle to put up the 101 era+ that marquis did.
  2. Russ Adams was picked 1 spot after Khalil Greene and was paid almost $300,000 more. I think this is some big-time 20/20 hindsight going on in this thread.
  3. uh, what? if the guy at mcdonald's is behaving dangerously while on the job, then your point has merit. otherwise, it's stupid. Just curious, what was my point? i'm not sure, but i find myself asking that question frequently.
  4. Ya, they could dig up Hank Greenberg too and have Crawford and Baldelli carry him around like Weekend at Bernies. LOL I'm in favor of this, it'd be cool to see, at least. plus it is not uncommon for jewish people to make their way to down to florida in their old age. i support this idea as well.
  5. this isn't close, nor should it be
  6. He really wasn't all that impressive of a baseball player, just a great manager and leader. .296/.394/.394 OPS+... 135 Yes, when he actually played he was very good. He just didn't put up the type of numbers that would make him an all time great for the franchise. From Bill James "Baseball Abstract" about Chance (Bill James' Baseball Abstract, pg. 441): While Ive got the book out, I may as well quote James' takes on the other guys, except Lee. Mark Grace (Bill James' Baseball Abstract, pg. 444): Phil Cavarretta (Bill James' Baseball Abstract, pg. 453): i assume that since he has Chance on p. 441, but Grace on p. 444 and Cavaretta on p. 453, that he has Chance rated more highly than Grace and Cavaretta? i don't think anyone is saying that chance was as good as stargell or even dick allen. but ted kluszewski? the guy was great for 4-5 years and average otherwise. frank chance was really good for nearly his entire career.
  7. i think he quit because it wasn't so easy to be on roids any more.
  8. uh, what? if the guy at mcdonald's is behaving dangerously while on the job, then your point has merit. otherwise, it's stupid.
  9. hey, the flyers won a game... in a shootout no less! broke a pair of 10 game winless streaks there! (hadn't won a shootout in 10 games, hadn't won a game in the last 10)
  10. yeah good point, those guys definitely don't know what they're doing. it's not like FJM was just voted the best sports blog of 2007. i mean that would generally tend to indicate that people find the site funny and enjoy going back there frequently and reading it, so it's a good thing that people didn't choose it as the best sports blog, or your argument would look pretty silly.

  12. quoted for emphasis.
  13. Reds fans are not thrilled at least it seems they are bracing for the impending train wreck that is dusty baker my favorite quote from that threat, in response to "I like OBP and I understand its merits but at times I think it becomes a hinderance to hitters."
  14. i literally cannot wait for this season to start, and perhaps the biggest reason is to watch dusty run a team other than the cubs - one of our divisional opponents, no less - into the ground.
  15. i don't think this is a big deal. i mean, a lot of us make fun of grit and scrappiness and how guys like short white guys like Eckstein are glorified for being mediocre. This article - especially the quotes from Theriot and Fleita - pretty much had every stereotype in the "scrappy" vein. Just because the article was written by a guy that we like and respect doesn't mean that we can't laugh at the quotes in it. We'd laugh if it was written by some reporter in Toronto about David Eckstein.
  16. Any other obvious things you'd like to point out? i second cubinny's tampon joke
  17. if you're running a business and not making a surplus (i.e., a profit) then you're doing a pretty damn bad job.
  18. i think there is some skill in projecting that certain players will be better or worse than their pecota projections. common sense, scouting, etc. i predict that ronny cedeno and felix pie will be worse than their pecota projections for 2008, and not by an insignificant amount.
  19. well we might as well not put any hitters on a prospect list, if that's the case. i'd like to hope things are changing for the better with our hitting prospects looking better than in the past. i wasn't really saying I disagreed with you, but I just was curious the reason for such adamant negativity for Vitters, mainly. the others have glaring question marks, but the prospect lists that like these guys have access to that information too, and must see some sign to provide optimism they're able to fix the flaws. you aren't in the 'shoulda drafted snider' crowd, i assume? looking better than in the past? i think our hitting prospects were looking pretty good when we had corey patterson, hee seop choi, david kelton, bobby hill, luis montanez and nic jackson coming through the system. if you take the cubs' top 6 hitting prospects right now - say pie, soto, vitters, colvin, donaldson, thomas - i can guarantee you that those guys are not as highly regarded, as a group, as the six guys i listed from back in 2002. how many of them turned into good major league hitters? i've been in the 'shoulda drafted wieters crowd, by the way'
  20. The problem with that (ignoring that the past won't necessarily repeat itself) is you have Soto at #1 and Geovany is a former HS draftee who was developed by the Cubs. yes but soto has plate discipline. the players that i have rated poorly (pie - not pictured, colvin) have questionable plate discipline. vitters, from what i have read, has an aggressive approach at the plate, and will swing at bad pitches because he can hit them. not a good thing in an organization that doesn't seem to teach their players to stop swinging at bad pitches.
  21. the devil has some tasty piss, if that's the case
  22. I love the Blackhawks, and I am glad the Hawks are finally trying to do something. But man, Patty Sharp has been such a STEAL from the Flyers, that Philly fans should be rioting in the streets. not really. we have too many good young forwards already. sharp was never going to be anything more than a third or fourth line player with us, because he was never going to play ahead of guys like carter, richards and umberger. i'm glad that he's doing well in chicago, but he wouldn't be a 30 goal scorer playing 7 minutes a night with a checking center and a goon on his line.
  23. terrible coach and a lack of puck-moving defensemen. i won't use injuries to lupul, gagne, upshall, hatcher and now richards as an excuse. the pens lost crosby and haven't missed a beat. john stevens is awful. there's a penalty for too many men on the ice every other game, which falls on the coaching staff. he's completely emotionless and lacks any sense of urgency, which shows when the team inexplicably comes out flat with startling frequency. he has extreme loyalty to certain players, like jim vandermeer, who couldn't have done anything more to play his way out of the lineup. Thankfully paul holmgren got vandermeer off the team, but we've still got randy jones, who can move the puck okay, but is usually good to give up a goal a game due to poor positioning or stupid penalties. derian hatcher plays a good positional game, but he's about as mobile as a filing cabinet at this stage of his career. meanwhile one of our best defensive defensemen, lasse kukkonen, sits as a healthy scratch every night. he's a nice guy, i suppose, but he's overmatched at this level. i think that the flyers' front office realizes how badly this team is underachieving, and they've never shown any reluctance to make a change at the head coaching position. stevens may be gone after this year, at least i sure hope he is.
  24. oh and craig anderson, who really isn't good, has 40 saves on 41 shots. the flyers are to bad goalies what the cubs are to mediocre LHP. haha awesome, randy jones proves yet again that he can't defend anybody one-on-one to save his life, gets abused by david booth (another guy who isn't good) and takes a penalty, and the panthers score right away on the pp. oh well, the positive thing about this collapse is that john stevens' chances of getting fired have gone up exponentially in the last 3 weeks.
  25. hahahaha flyers outplay florida badly all game and only get 1 goal, then they're 4 seconds from breaking a 9 game winless streak, and some florida guy fires the punk blindly in front of the net and it deflects off one of our guys and into the net. classic. and mike richards hurt his leg a few minutes earlier. wait til 2009.
