  1. we had jim vandermeer in the lineup. it's hard to get much worse than that. and modry is a +2 on the year, pretty good considering that he's been on a horrible team. the next best among regular defensemen was a -9 from preissing. in other news, the flyers managed to lose their 10th consecutive shootout last night. that's not easy.
  2. most underrated play in baseball history: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_al6s9BpmE
  3. do you really think that certain players don't have certain skills that allow them to sustain high babip's year in and year out? exhibit a exhibit b exhibit c exhibit d - note the consistently strong LD%, which is correlated with a high babip. add in a little bump for his speed and being quick out of the batter's box, and voila... high babip year in and year out.
  4. his babip in his last two minor league seasons was .359 and .375. maybe it's that he's been ridiculously lucky for 3 straight years now, but it's more likely that he's like an ichiro and can put up a consistently high babip due to his speed and hitting lefthanded. He's got less than a full season's worth of playing time in his MLB career, spreading it out over September 2006 and in most of last season doesn't prove to me that he's got the rare ability to sustain an insanely high BABIP. so you are ignoring the fact that his babip in the minors was just as good as it has been in the majors? Yes, because he was 2+ years old for just about every level of his minor league career. that could explain why he performed at a level better than expected. you're talking about how many of his balls in play ended up as hits. that's something that should not be affected by one's age relative to the other players in that league, unless you're 25 and playing in a league of 4 year olds. In which case your babip might be artificially high since 4 year olds have rather limited range.
  5. geovany soto was to 2007 what rich hill was to 2006.
  6. I don't get this ... why does everybody keep just posting his name, and other people quoting it? How did this start? see if you click here, you can see what most of the minor league box score threads were like. soto would have a big game, and then several people would talk about how idiotic it was that the best catcher in the organization was at AAA, blocked by two guys who were, frankly, terrible. so after soto blew up yet again, there was a thread in which everyone was pissed about soto still being in iowa, and sethuel just wrote, as a post, "Geovany Soto" it just took off from there. instead of posting "why the hell isn't soto up" we'd just quote "geovany soto" since there wasn't much more that needed to be said. i believe that i was the first one to quote it without writing anything, in this thread.

  8. no ramifications. he was jawing at fans who were jawing at him. btw the final of the game was 64-54 and pryor had 24 points, 24 rebounds, 8 blocked shots, 7 assists. he's a pretty good athlete.

  10. I don't think you read my post the way I intended it to be read, because there are very few guys in that list that fit the description of what I'm talking about. All the guys outside of the very earliest rounds you can scratch, and in some cases you're listing guys who weren't regarded that way but we just lower round success stories. And Khalil Greene? He won the Golden Spikes Award the year he was drafted, he doesn't fit at all to the kind of Russ Adams/Cliff Pennington utility scrapper overdraft types I'm talking about. why not? russ adams was drafted 14th overall. khalil greene was drafted 16th. khalil greene was regarded by a low-ceiling guy with a lot of polish. just because he turned out better than russ adams doesn't mean it's not a valid comparison. adams' junior year was as good as greene's junior year; greene just had a huge senior year that jumped him up to the middle of the first round.
  11. kosuke should have a better year than soto. he should be the odds-on favorite to win it, simply because he's a lot more polished and experienced than anyone else in the race. i'm assuming that bruce won't play enough (dusty is the manager). joey votto has a shot. cameron maybin will be good, but he's a little too raw at this point. is justin upton still eligible?
  12. i hope you're right... well except for the "short" part anyway and please, let's not avoid trades because we're afraid of "blocking colvin." block him. forever.
  13. Why? It wasn't a terrible contract. They did not go overboard. In fact Pavano had similar contracts from at least 2 other teams. Yes, in hindsight it is terrible, however he was the best pitcher available in that FA year. If he was able to pitch and be a solid #4 his contract would be fine. The Yankees had teams interested in trade talks for Pavano last year, before the TJ surgery! dude, pavano had pitched in seven major league seasons and had a grand total of two years with an ERA+ above 100, and one at 100. So basically he was average or worse than average in 5 of his 7 seasons in the big leagues. he had a lot of injury problems before 2003 as well. this was a bad signing that was based on one very good year that he had. you don't give $40m over 4 years to a guy who has been below-average most of his career and is a significant injury risk. just because multiple teams go overboard and offer big contracts after one big year (see: adrian beltre) doesn't mean that it was an acceptable move. it just means that multiple teams were stupid.
  14. yeah that was one of my favorite things that happened last year, the white sox got all pissed off at the computer that projected them to go 72-90, and then they... finished the season at 72-90. bwahahaha.
  15. flyers are making a late-season push to miss the playoffs. 7 losses in a row!!!
  16. Howard's much stronger and can jump a heck of a lot higher. Moreover, unlike Kemp, Howard's never had weight issues. or 30 illegitimate kids
  17. dwight howard is a freak of nature. he's about as athletic as you'll see a guy of that size. and he's ridiculously strong too; i could see him really becoming dominant in the next two years.
  18. when i saw the last name, i thought "whose son could he be? not pat kelly. pat kelly can't be old enough to have a son who's a senior in high school." i'm getting old :x
  19. dusty baker has been involved with baseball for a long time, i guess we're not giving his baseball acumen enough credit then.
  20. Khalil Greene, Dustin Pedroia, Kevin Youkilis, David DeJesus, Chris Capuano, Dave Bush, Hunter Pence, Brian Roberts, jon lieber, aaron heilman, dan johnson, ian kinsler, j.j. putz, joe blanton. to name a few. John Olerud and Mark Grace are good examples from the past as well. and really, how could anyone forget DAVID ECKSTEIN?
  21. so what's michael beasley have to do to not be the #1 pick in the 2008 draft? blow out his knee? kill a man? rape a dog? oh yeah, holy cross won! :yahoo: here are the PL standings now... American 7-3 (15-10) Navy 6-4 (13-12) Lafayette 5-5 (14-11) Lehigh 5-5 (12-12) Holy Cross 5-6 (14-10) Bucknell 5-6 (10-15) Colgate 4-6 (12-12) Army 4-6 (11-13) hellllloooooo, 16 seed!
  22. Exactly. I think a brand new stadium in Miami is going to drastically increase the fans attending. The current stadium seems designed to drive away as many people as possible. you'd be surprised. people in south florida are terrible sports fans. there are a lot of transplants, and the whole scene down there is a lot more focused on fashion and nightlife than it is professional athletics. regardless of how good the product is, i doubt that they'll draw really well.
  23. so who else is watching holy cross against bucknell on espn2 at 6:00 this evening????
  24. i'll be stunned if the giants don't lose more than 90 games.
