  1. trade deadline is coming up in three weeks. we could use a puck-moving defenseman, but the flyers don't seem at all interested in trading from the excellent young base that they've built over the past few years. i wouldn't be opposed to trading a young forward because we've got a wealth of potential 2nd/3rd line options, but i wouldn't do it without getting some young talent back. in reality, if the flyers make a big move in the next three weeks, it will probably be signing peter forsberg.
  2. someone at work who knows a lot about psu football that i don't has said that there's no way that jay will be the psu head coach. he's too unpopular and isn't regarded as hc material, at least for a prominent d-i program. he also said that this isn't really talked about, but people close to the program think that a non-insignificant part of joe's decision to stay or retire has to do with his son. he and his wife believe that if he retires and a new coach comes in, that they'll bring in their own staff, and that staff will not retain his son. so his son will move to another job in another town, so joe won't be living near his closest son and grandkids any more. i'm sure a lot of people don't like that as a reason to stay around too long, but it is what it is.
  3. With all the great teams Joe has had, he's never developed a really good QB. kerry collins was a very good college and was okay in the nfl. but not a really good nfl quarterback, obviously.
  4. not sure that we will be able to match ohio state's offer to pryor. i don't think jay paterno ruined morrelli, i don't think morrelli was ever that good to begin with. i'd heard long before last year that he was stupid. his problems weren't in arm strength and his accuracy was adequate, but he was terrible at making decisions. there's only so much that a coaching staff can do in that respect.
  5. So what the heck DO you want us to talk about? Can't talk about Eli being good, because he's not. Can't talk about the Giants D being good, because they were only good last night. Can't talk about Belidick being a dick, because everyone knows this already. uh yeah we can. they gave up 38 points to new england the first time, and 14 the second time. what'd they do different? why'd the patriots struggle more to pass protect last night than in any other game this year? why'd belichick go for it on 4th and 18, but not go for it on a couple of 4th and shorts? i can think of 100 more topics more interesting than "bill belichick is a dick," which will result in 50 different people saying "i agree, what a baby" or "i'm glad he lost, he has no class" and nobody disagreeing with the sentiment.
  6. wait so now we are talking about how bill belichick is an a-hole? i thought it was silly to talk about the performance of the giants defense because everyone knew they were really good (even though they gave up 38 points to the pats the first time they played them), but let's all talk about how much of a dick bill belichick is? i think most patriots fans, as well as his kids and parents probably, know that he's a prick.
  7. i think the entire nl central is a laughingstock... for good reason too
  8. i think it's some ole miss thing. or it refers to todd hundley or todd hollandsworth maybe.
  9. and you are, as usual, trying to show everyone how big your e-penis is by getting under someone's skin. that act is old, really. but i guess if that gets you off, then have fun with it. no credit for homer picks!
  10. most of the posts after the game on this board, and most of the talk on tv, was about eli manning and not the giants' defense. you're being stupid.
  11. uh not really. i actually like the patriots, and i wouldn't mind hearing that talked about. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/2008-01-28-computer-projection_N.htm if you play that game 10 times, the pats probably win 8. today was the giants' day, but they're not as good as the patriots. much like the 2006 cards were not as good as a lot of the teams that they played. as for eli manning not being good, i guess if you ignore stuff like statistics then i can see how he'd be a good quarterback. and besides, at least i am willing to make a prediction. i'm guessing you thought the patriots would win too, but since you didn't say it, people can't really call you on it.
  12. yeah the offensive guys always get the accolades though, especially the QB/RB. so it goes. i think most people who really understand football know that it was the giants' defense that won the game, even though i'm sure 80% of the game analysis will focus on eli manning. spagnuolo might've just gotten himself the redskins' head coaching job. when your defense neutralizes three of the top four offenses in the league, and then holds the best offense ever to 14 points on the biggest stage, people have to notice. he was blessed with an excellent front four, no doubt, but their linebackers are mediocre and their secondary is not nearly as talented as they looked late in the year. he did a great job with their schemes, he's fairly young (48) and is a disciple of jim johnson, the eagles' defensive cooordinator - who is highly regarded, and would be a head coach if not for his age (66). the only thing that will piss me off is spagnuolo helping one of our division rivals win the super bowl, and then going to be head coach of another division rival. can't you go to the afc or something?
  13. He's definitely starting to show his age. IIRC, a linebacker chased down Boss on that play, meaning that he was pretty much outrunning harrison. rodney was also the one who got beat on that deep ball to tyree; it wasn't a particularly hard play for a defender... all you have to do is get high enough to touch the ball and it's an incomplete pass. i think the pats need to add some athleticism on that defense; guys like harrison, vrabel, bruschi and seau are definitely slowing down.
  14. embarrassing myself? i'm not the one calling it one of the best super bowl performances in history. i'm not the one creaming himself over 17 points when their defense held the most prolific offense of all-time to just 14 points. if you want to talk about a great game, let's talk about the giants' front four and secondary, not eli manning. there's a difference between "creaming yourself over 17 points" and giving a man some credit. You'd think that after you just spent the last two months acting like no one could even touch the Patriots that you'd be willing to say a little "well done" instead of acting like a baby. what are you talking about? i said that he played fine. he made a few risky throws that didn't end up costing him; he also made some good plays. i certainly knew that another team could score 17 points on the patriots; i didn't think that a defense could hold them to only 14. i guess i shouldn't expect everyone to understand this, since it's a baseball board, but a lot of the time there are parts of a team, aside from the quarterback, that are the key to winning the game.
  15. embarrassing myself? i'm not the one calling it one of the best super bowl performances in history. i'm not the one creaming himself over 17 points when their defense held the most prolific offense of all-time to just 14 points. if you want to talk about a great game, let's talk about the giants' front four and secondary, not eli manning.
  16. i still think that he put too much on the pass, even if burress had kept running downfield. i don't really blame eli; he's a pocket passer who was trying to make a tough throw on the run. but it was a play that could've been made. not that one - the one that was like one or two plays later, where tyree almost made the grab on the left side. the deep ball was a fine decision; a little bit of risk in that play, but you're down 4 and it's third down, and if that was the best option then so be it. btw i blame the pats for poor tackling on that play more than i give credit to eli for getting out of trouble. there were two guys that should've had him on the ground pretty easily, and didn't get him. it's not like eli is michael vick or vince young out there; if you get your hands on him you should put him on the turf. and speaking of bad tackling, did anyone think rodney harrison had a pretty lousy game? his tackling was fairly poor, especially on that long pass to kevin boss. it looked like he was trying to play grab-ass more than actually wrap him up.
  17. I told you so. :D bad reasoning, right result.
  18. WOW. Just..... the grim reaper cannot get to these guys fast enough.
  19. wow be careful out on that limb keyshawn.
  20. right, and that's why i give credit to the giants' defense. they won the super bowl for that team. just because a guy is the qb for a team that wins the super bowl doesn't mean that he "led" them there. he did play really well in a couple of games; he wasn't great against the packers, and he wasn't great tonight. he was fine. he didn't make many mistakes, which had been his achilles heel, but i can't look at those games and say "the giants won those games on the shoulders of eli manning." they averaged 21 points per game in the playoffs, hardly an overwhelming accomplishment. on the other hand, the defense went out and held the #1, #2 and #4 offenses (in terms of points scored) in the league to 17, 20 and 14 points. all i'm saying is, i don't think eli led the giants to the super bowl much more than trent dilfer or brad johnson did.
  21. I root for the TEAM more than individual players. Whoever will help the TEAM win the World Series is fine by me (I'm talking about the concept, not Barroids specifically). A century is WAY too long between championships. Beggars can't be choosers. I think most fans would care less if there are a few unlikeable players on the team when they finally win a title. i think everyone has their line for how "unlikeable" a guy can be before they don't want him on their team. i happen to draw the line before i get to barry bonds. he's a great player, but he's a complete dick, and i would have a hard time rooting for him.
  22. that's fine. he was a rookie and the team was pretty lousy. but how about this year, when he had a pretty good line and running game, and a top TE and WR. 25th out of 33 in passer rating. can't chalk that one up to having never played in the nfl.
  23. i don't really hate eli manning. i hate some guys on the giants, and i hate the giants as a team, but i don't hate manning. i just know that he's not that good. he's 27. yes and i didn't say that he couldn't improve, but for his first four years in the league, he has not been good. if you go through a list of the top QBs in the history of the game, you'll find a total of zero quarterbacks who played as poorly as eli played in the first four years of his career. he could become a pretty good quarterback, but there's no parallel to him becoming a great QB.
  24. in light of the circumstances? the patriots' defense wasn't that great this year. they were very good, yes, but not great. and let's be honest, the reason the giants won the game was their defense, not eli manning. the giants scored 17 points, which most people before the game would've said would not be enough to win. the giants' defense, especially their front four, played great, and held the most prolific offense in the league to just two touchdowns. and manning should've been maligned by the NY media; he had a lower QB rating than 3/4 of the league. i'm sorry, i didn't realize that urlacher, vasher, harris and briggs were on the field at the same time as rex grossman. I know, and if I went farther back I could talk about how guys like Mark Rypien, Phil Simms, Jim Plunkett and Doug Williams had better games in the Super Bowl. He played fine, not great, and I think he was pretty fortunate on a few of his throws, but let's not blow this game out of proportion.
  25. Here's the kicker...you don't have to HEAR them. Either mute them, or change the channel, like I will. But I SUPPOSED Mike and Mike will either having Don Shula and/or Mercury Morris on their show tomorrow morning, to which I will be......zzzzzzzzzzzzz. hence the reason i won't be turning on espn or sports talk radio for the next two weeks. but you're still going to hear from them next year. and the year after that. and the year after that...
