the dodgers drastically overpaid for furcal, that much is fact. yes. he's fast and yes, he plays good D, but $13M for a guy with no power when vlad is making, what, $17M...c'mon?

i would much rather see JH re-sign nomar to play 2nd and put cedeno at SS, with walker serving as insurance to both (that means no more macias). he should now explore deals for pierre and abreu/dunn (if they're available).

check out this lineup:

pierre

nomar

lee

abreu/dunn

ramirez

murton

barrett

cedeno

talk about a potent lineup. if nomar continues his hitting from last season, and cedeno has just a moderately good first full year (.270ish), then we're in business.

The problem is that Hendry already pretty much told nomar not to let the door hit him where the good lord split him. He put all his eggs in the Furcal basket and now we are gonna pay for it. I agree the dodgers overpaid. I am less upset that we didnt get Furcal and more upset that hendry set himself up to get raped on the tradeblock.

The good news is that every team knows that the Cubs have enough money to take any bad contract. Let's hope that means someone more like Manny and less like Steve Finley.

I don't get why what we did with Nomar was so bad, we were respectful enough to admit our first priority was Furcal and that he should see what else is available. Now that Furcal is gone, I don't see why he wouldn't sign if we wanted him.

Why don't you just resign Nomar to play SS and put Walker at 2B? It's unlikely Cedeno plays at all anyway.

With Hendry's new "I like guys who can catch the ball" mantra, I see about a .0000001% chance of that happening.

Did I hear Royce Clayton was still available? Wouldn't Neifi and Royce make for about the worst middle infield in the history of MLB?

Can I rule out that possibility completely? No!

Plus, you gotta remember, Hendry already more or less told both of them to move on.

Didnt that guy starve to death yet?

Yeah, both are as good as gone.

Well, Nomar is getting no interest using him at SS, so why not RF?

Either Pierre or Lofton leading off and Walker at 2nd with Cedeno at SS.

Acquire another pitcher and leave the cash until midseason to fill whatever needs during salary dump time.

When did Hendry "more or less" tell Walker to move on?

Indications are the Cubs may get involved in a multi-player deal. One report of a rumored trade: pitcher Jerome Williams, outfielder Corey Patterson and second baseman Todd Walker to Texas for power-hitting second baseman Alfonso Soriano and outfielder Kevin Mench.

Then you could then move Soriano for someone if you wanted or keep him and that kills two holes. You know dusty wouldn't play neifi over soriano.

He didn't, we own him for this season. Hendry appears to be attempting to trade walker.

I'd keep Soriano and try to move Mench for a LH bat. (Floyd, package for Abreu)

Please Jim, not again...

Not another season of watching meaningless solo homers day after day...

Why do the Cubs seem to be targeting exactly the kind of players they don't need? If that deal is made, I'm going to freak out.

I don't see too many solo HRs if Soriano is hitting in his rightful spot behind both Lee and Ramirez. If he's hitting 1st or 2nd.

No...he would play Perez at SS instead.

If rumors are true that the Cubs want a LH bat badly for RF, they can move Mench for one. Soriano isn't the type of player they need, but accompanying a move for top of the order hitters he would be a productive addition that will help the lineup.

I believe that not getting Furcal CAN be that bad. Considering Neifi might be the starter I can tell you right now the situation can get really ugly.

Worst Case Scenario: Hendry goes into the season with Cedeno at SS and Neifi at 2b. Cedeno struggles out of the gate so Dusty decides to move Neifi over to SS and start Macias everyday at 2b.

With Dusty this is very possible. I won't stand for either of the two being starters.

Sure, Soriano isn't a bad option in the right spot in the order. However, you're talking about giving up pretty much the only top of the order hitter the Cubs have right now (Walker) and replacing him with a guy who should not even sniff the top of the order. Not to mention, you are almost garanteeing (I can't spell) Neifi a starting spot at either SS or 2B. I'll give you one guess where he'll be hitting.
