The problem, is there are NO FA OF's, right now worth any value. The Cubs have plenty of money to spend anyway. Why not sign Furcal, then get an OF via trade?

Plenty of money? Not when you throw 3M at Eyre, 4M at Howry, 3M at Rusch, and 3M at Neifi. Throw in Furcal at 10-13M and we're looking at Jockstrap Jones or Burnitz.

Your numbers are off, according to Cot's Contracts. Your numbers account for 13 Million. Cot has the numbers at 2.5 for Howry, 2.7 for Eyre, 2.5 for Neifi, and 2.75 for Rusch. That is 10.45 million. 2.5 million is nothing to sneeze at.

I have no idea about the non-neifi signing bonuses, but you can't forget his million

$1.5M bonus to Howry, $1M bonus each to Eyre and Dempster. I'm not sure how the Cubs pay out these bonuses or how they treat them with regards to payroll. The CBA prorates them evenly over the life of the contract when determining a club's effective payroll for the luxury tax, but that doesn't mean the Trib does the same when signing the paychecks.

I'm happy Furcal is atleast showing that kind of respect to these teams. If we don't sign him we will have the full time at the GM meetings to work on Plan B.

Those numbers don't account for the signing bonuses and incentives. I don't know if those bonuses are evenly prorated or not.

signing bonuses and incentives:

Eyre - 1M (signing bonus) + 2.8M (incentives)

Howry - 1.5M (signing bonus)

Neifi - ?

Rusch - 1M (incentives)

even if Eyre doesn't collect any of his incentives (unlikely that he'll close with both Dempster and Howry), he'll probably make his appearance incentives, totaling 0.9M (.3M/year over contract life). add in the signing bonuses prorated and we have a grand total of 1.5M in incentives/bonuses for 2006.

that's a whopping 1M difference from your calcs. No big deal.

Excellent.

If he signs with us, I owe everyone that actually believed it beforehand here a Coke.

I'm serious. I'll mail everyone here a Coke if he signs here.

In all seriousness, it's pretty obvious Furcal is going where the money is. He's salivating at making $13 million a year.

Furcal is asking too much for my taste. As much as we need a leadoff man and a steady SS, that's far too much and far too long to commit. I would rather trade prospects and pitching to Tampa, Pittsburgh and get back Gomes, Wilson, etc..

Why would you want Wilson? The guy had a .299 OBP last year. Might as well put Neifi at SS.

2B/SS. It doesn't matter. Neifi is a real team player. he'll start in whatever MIF position you want.

Aramis had a great 2001 with our AAAA team, but digressed in '02, and wasn't doing too hot either in '03 with them. Then he caught fire with us. Think Wilson could follow the same path? I wouldn't be disappointed if Hendry took a gamble on him if we missed out on Furcal. With Neifi, you know what you're going ot get. With Wilson, there's a chance to get a whole lot more, and we'd be buying low instead of high (like with Aramis).

6s only, as far as I'm aware. He'd only need 5 other people who dring IBC vs 11 cherry coke or pepsi drinkers.

I think it's the exact opposite of Ramirez, Ramirez had several productive season in the minors as well as his breakout year before his regression.

Wilson in his 3 years prior to his "breakout" season had OBPs of .255, .306, .303, then his .335 breakout, and back down to .299. OBP isn't everything, but it was his only season above.700 OPS as well.

Wow, I didn't realize Wilson's numbers in the minors were so shoddy. Nevermind then....sounds like his rookie year was a fluke, and the league figured him out after that.
