Derek Lowe is a decent pitcher with a bad contract: he has $28.5m coming to him over the next three years. The Cubs may as a result be able to acquire him and Bradley relatively cheaply in terms of players, but they're not then going to be able to flip Lowe with a prospect for Abreu, unless they're eating a ridiculous amount of salary, or the prospect is called Felix.

Lowe's contract is not bad, in fact I would say it's avg to good.

Especially compared to what the market is dictating this year. he's making 5M more than Kris Benson correct? i think it's a decent contract. Wood is goinng to make 11.5M this year.

Benson makes 7.5M each of the next two years with a 7.5M option for '08.

Lowe will make 9, 9.5, and 10M the next 3 years.

So Pie + relatively cheap cost of acquiring Bradley/Lowe nets us Bradley and Abreu? I'd do it.

And about $40m in salary commitments over the next two years.

Look, it boils down to this. If Derek Lowe, a good prospect and a chunk of cash is worth Abreu, why would the Dodgers bother dealing with the Cubs?

Why wouldn't they just do a Lowe for Abreu deal and skip the Cubs?

Because then they can't get rid of Bradley.

Why couldn't they just do two separate trades. One with us to give up Bradley and one with the Phillies to get Abreu. They were trying to get Giles, why wouldn't they want to try and get Abreu? Lord knows they have enough prospects to throw along with Lowe.

Exactly. That's why Hendry should just focus on getting something done with Bradley directly, and skip the more complicated scenarios.

Paying a starting pitcher that's in all likelihood going to be around league average an average of $9.5m over the next three years is a bad contract regardless. If the free agent market's so bad that anyone could possibly think otherwise, then you find and use other means to reach your ends.

They can non-tender Bradley if push comes to shove.

There's no need for them to make a bad trade to offload him.

i think another vital part of this from the mlbtraderumors.com report is that if the Cubs don't sign Furcal they will be going after Lugo as well. So potentially we could end up with Lowe/Bradley/Lugo.

Dodgers have so many holes to fill, I don't see them taking on an even bigger contract in Abreu. Isn't that why they wanna move Lowe anyways?

Any wanting to get rid of Lowe would be all about the roughly league average pitcher earning $28.5m over the next three years thing.

so hill is only worth a non-tendered OF who no one else wants? i dont think so. if hendry wont give hill for dunn, he certainly wont give him up for bradley.

Lugo and Bradley could trade wife beating secrets!

Sorry, I couldn't help myself.

Ha, that's so horrible, yet funny in a twisted way.

sup guys, 2nd post here but if this trade goes through wouldnt the Dodgers free up more money and make a serious run at Furcal?

That would be fine by me. If they want to overpay Raffy, I'd much rather get serious upgrades in the OF and stick with Ronny at SS.

Probably.. A risky move by Jim since they give LA more budget space. Hopefully, Bradley remains sane for an entire season.

So then we COULD have

Lugo SS (OBP/SPEED)

Walker 2B (OBP/SOME POWER)

Lee 1B (OBP/DECENT SPEED/POWER)

Bradley CF (OBP/DECENT SPEED/SOME POWER)

Ramirez 3B (OBP/SLUGGING)

???? RF

Murton LF (OBP/SOME POWER)

Barrett C (OBP/SOME POWER)

Depending on who you get to fill SS/RF gaps it could be a very solid team.

Throw a couple more arms at Tampa and get Lugo and Huff. Done.

We land Lugo and Huff then Bradley and I will be one happy camper.

Do you guys think Tampa will be more reasonable than during the season when they were supposedly asking for Z before talking about Huff?

I think so because Lemar is gone now. At the same time nothing comes cheap.
