According to the papers in Miami (Link), Castillo is definitely going to be traded.

The Twins (as discussed in another thread) are hot on his trail, but so are the Cardinals, Red Sox, and Mets.

If the Cubs are serious about the middle infield defense, they should make a run at him.

"He's definitely going," said a National League source who has spoken with the Marlins. "It's just a little too early to say where."

If the Cubs sign Furcal, they could use Cedeno and/or Walker to go after Castillo.

With Furcal locked up for five years as is being reported and Castillo for two more, I wouldn't have a problem trading Cedeno. If Furcal isn't signed, I'd rather offer Pinto plus others for Castillo than for Pierre. If we acquired Castillo and then traded for Bradley we'd be better off than going after Pierre.

Wouldn't Pinto, Cedeno and Walker be more than enough for Castillo and Pierre? It would probably be worth it, too. (If we signed Furcal first, of course.)

That would leave us with too many people who get on base.

I agree with you and I'm not sure why Hendry isn't pursuing that (if he isn't). I assume Cedeno or Walker is traded for Castillo and the other is part of a trade to get Bradley.

I'd rather go with Castillo only and get Bradley for CF. Of course, I guess you could always put Pierre in CF and Bradley in RF. Not a very powerful OF, but one that could probably get on base pretty well.

I'm in the Castillo boat as well but, given the Marlins are in a salary dumping mode I don't think they'll take on Walker. Perhaps, Cedeno (meaning Furcal must be signed) and Pinto for Castillo? Then spin Walker to Dodgers for Bradley?

I would not mind if they went after Castillo to replace Walker, it isn't the significant upgrade this team needs at this stage. It would improve the defense more than the offense.

I would be opposed to it as with the other moves if the payroll increase prevents the Cubs from improving this team at it's greatest areas of need (OF).

With this FA class, you can't sit back and let the other teams & top tier OF'ers determine the value of the class. Any elite OF'er will lneed to be done via trade since you can throw players like Jones, Burnitz, etc. into a bag and grab blindly and get similar production.

The Cubs appear to be one of those willing to help set the bar for SS and middle relievers, I would hope it transfers to the OF, which I assumed would be of greater need than a LOOGY, set-up, and a SS.

Didn't I hear somewhere that the Marlins were NOT going to blow up their roster? Sure looks like they are.

A quick comb of their current roster shows that LoDuca, Castillo, Pierre and Cabrera are basically the only offensive players left, and three of those guys are being shopped.

I will say that they have gotten some pretty good young players in return and they probably won't stay down too long.

Cabrera, Hermida, Mike Jacobs, Jason Stokes and Hanley Ramirez is a nice group of young prospects that are all very close to ML ready.

Could you imagine if the Cubs signed Furcal and traded for Castillo? A 1 and 2 of Furcal and Castillo batting in front of D Lee and Aram??

Adding Cedeno to above group makes it more attractive...

Furcal

Pierre

Castillo

Lee

Ramirez

Bradley

Barrett

Murton

It would be a nice problem to have, but a wierd lineup having all these 1-2 hitters. It would probably turn out to be one of the best in the NL for run production though.

Man, I agree with you. If we had those plus got Milton Bradley for the outfield, I would be very content with this offseason.

Nice move for Minnesota, I'm not too sold on any of their pitching prospects minus Crain (if you still consider him a prospect), that's not to diminish pitchers like Durbin, Sw2arzak, etc, but Castillo fills a huge hole for them.

He'll do well with them.
