Now the million dollar question:

Who are you and why shoudl we believe?

And BTW, I just saw Jim Hendry at the gym and he said that Patterson for A-Rod is all but done.

Who would lie about John Mabry?

Who are your other lefties off the bench now that Hollandsworth's gone? Not a whole lot of bench lefties with pop available. He's definitely not a liability defensively. He is a great team player and has come through in big at bats for us. I have no idea why he had approx. 150 ABs in the first half for us and 100 in the second half when the Cards were decimated with injuries. He seemed to be buried on the bench.

His stats aren't much better than Macias.

He walks a bit more, strikes out more, and has slightly more power.

slightly more power? mabry hit as many hr's last year as macias has in his past three combined.

he's got roughly the same power as hollandsworth, and most people were pretty happy w/ him on the bench.

I can't wait to hear Scoop Jackson comment on this move

"White GM Replaces Dark-Skinned Utility Man With White Man Who Plays Less Positions"

EDIT: But yes, I think it's a pretty good move :D

Mabry was pretty terrible last year, but his career has been much better. That said, he is getting older and he may not approach those numbers again. If signing Mabry means Lee doesn't play 162 games, then it's probably a good thing. That all said, I prefer Mark Sweeney, although I don't know if Mabry signing will preclude that.

Guys, I was kidding. Hence the multiple winks. In truth, I was just trying to facilitate the multi-facited Hendry joke.

I think some are being too hard on Mabry, he had a sub-par 2005, but 2004 he posted an excellent line. He can play 1B, 3B and the OF, hits left-handed, and has some power. He's basically a younger version of what I hoped Dave Hansen could give us a couple years ago. I especially like that he can cover some 3B, because it means there is no way, no how Jose F. Macias makes this roster for a third consecutive year. And that's addition by subtraction, folks. For $1MM too--lest you forget, Gremlin was actually paid $825,000 last year to suck eggs. It's not too often in the modern game you can say you actually improved your team for a $175,000 net investment.

It just seems to me that Hendry is always a day late and pays too much for past production. Who was the last Cub off the bench that was an effective sub/pinch hitter?

Randel "I never saw a pitch I didn't like" Simon.

Man I loved him. He would swing at anything...and make contact.

If it does lead to the dismissal of Macias, I'm 100% behind the signing. But as others have pointed out, Mabry is not a direct replacement. And Macias could still be here.

i'd prefer mark sweeney.

as long as he STAYS a bench guy, which i don't think is very likely, this won't be too terrible.

this could end up really ugly, though...

I'm new so go easy on me! That same website states Abreu for Gibbons and Bedard? You can't tell me that is the best offer out there for Abreu....why not a deal with Patterson/Rich Hill for Abreu?

Also, is david kelton just a career triple A player now?

He was a guy Hendry traded for and he was a decent pinch hitter. I wish Hendry could figure out how to get a quality bench guy via the free agent route.

Welcome aboard. I agree that there would have to be a better deal available for Abreu. If that goes down, I will personally slap JH silly for not one-upping the O's.

And yes, I think Kelton is probably doomed to be a career minor leaguer.

If so it will be in Atlanta/Richmond.

The Braves signed him a few days ago.

If only Hendry could sign Giles and bring him off the bench.

Randall Simon was great. Great character & clubhouse guy. Always enjoyed seeing him hi-fivin everyone. Bring him back and bring back Bobby Hill and DuBois as well. What the heck.
